IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS ANDS LIMITATIONS OF THIS SPREADSHEET
1 Note units used: eg Height and Span are in m, (not mm), Forces are in kN, (not N)
2 Edit only the section dropdown boxes plus cells highlighted in yellow.
- Editing other cells including 'blank' cells, risks disrupting formulae and links which are essential to the spreadsheet.
- Do not edit the reference tables (tabs shaded blue), without fully understanding the links within the spreadsheet.
- Do not edit the structural sketches without fully understanding the links within the spreadsheet.
3 Note orientations of sections, shaded green in the diagrams. They may be different to previous versions of this spreadsheet.
4 Cantilevers, T- & L- posts, Goalposts and Trapezes are assumed to have fixed supports. Trimmer steel (Outside the scope of this spreadsheet) shall be designed to
provide this. Results are invalid if this cannot be achieved
'Beams' are conservatively assumed 'simply-supported'. If 'fully-fixed, rigid' supports can be justified on both axes, improved result can be 'simulated' by reducing load
5 Fv by 30%. Eg model 10kN load in the calculation as 7kN
6 Note dropdown box for 'Single' and 'Multiple' pipe loads (for 'Beam', 'Goalpost' and 'Trapeze') :
- 'Single' pipes are assumed at Midspan, or at specified distance on a 'Cantilever', T- or L-post or Inv T- or L- post
- 'Multiple' pipes directs the spreadsheet to use a Uniformly Distributed Pipe Load (udl) when calculating Bending Moments and \deflections
7 All Loads are unfactored static working loads, and refer to total loads of all pipes on the span. Surge and vibration are outside the scope of this spreadsheet.
8 If Blast Loads are selected from the Load Type dropdown box, allowable stresses (in sections, plates and bolts) will be automatically increased by factor 1.67 (ie to yield)
9 Calculations for bending and axial stresses include vertical and friction loads and, where specified, guide and stop loads
10 Additional stop and guide loads are discretionary, calculations work for any value, including zero.
11 The proportion of Live Load (Contents) to Total Load (Dead + Live) varies with pipe dia., but Max value = 68% x Sched 10 pipe total wt. ð Vertical deflections are calculated using
(specified vertical loads) x 0.68. (It is assumed that structures will deflect under dead loads prior to final pipe welding. Not necessarily valid for retrofit situations)
12 Londitudinal (along the pipe) deflections are calculated for Stop Loads only ; ie friction is ignored.
14 Torsion is ignored. This is likely to be a problem only for T- and L- posts subject to 'Stop' Loads. Consider adding plan bracing to eliminate torsion from Stop loads.
Otherwise, consult Structures Group
15 Calculations comply with BS449. You must verify that BS449 is acceptable for use on the project.
16 Sections pass or fail according to Bending or Deflection criteria only. Shear is typically not critical and is ignored. Table 3a (BS449) is conservatively used for bending due to udl and point loads.
- Vertical Loads: 6 mm ;
18 All connections (except supports of simply-supported beam) are assumed 'fixed moment connections'.
19 Design of Fully-welded Connections and Local Stiffeners are included. Note that stiffener design is automatically hidden unless required
20 Designs of Fully-welded Baseplate and Holding-down bolts are included. Note that Bolt design is automatically hidden unless a removable baseplate is required
21 Design of foundations or secondary steelwork is outside the scope of this spreadsheet. Ensure that these are reviewed by the relevant discipline Engineer (Civils and/or Structures)
22 Assumed material grades: Grade S275 (= Grade 43) Steel ; Grade 8.8 Bolts
23 Allowable bending stress depends on l/r and D/T, except for RHS and SHS sections which adopt the full value (180 N/mm2)
24 If the warning message: 'User-defined type not defined' appears after entering data, try clicking on any other cell rather than hitting 'Enter'.
25 Additional sections may be added to 'Beam Data', but many links to each worksheet require to be amended. See 2 above.
