Answer all questions (Total 10 marks)

1. A small metal box of mass 6kg is attached at B to two ropes BP and BQ. The fixed pointsP and Q are on a
horizontal ceiling and PQ = 3.5m. The box hangs in equilibrium at avertical distance of 2m below the line PQ, with
the ropes in a vertical plane and with angle BQP = 45°, as shown in figure below. The box is modelled as a particle and
the ropes are modelled as light inextensible strings.

(a) Label the two tension forces in the figure. (2m)

(b) Calculate the tension in BP. (2m)

(c) Calculate the tension in BQ. (2m)

2. A particle, P, of mass km lies on a fixed rough plane. The plane is inclined to the horizontal at an acute
angle ș. A horizontal force of magnitude X acts on P, as shown in Figure. The line of action of the force
lies in the vertical plane which contains the line of greatest slope of the inclined plane that passes through
P. The coefficient of friction between P and the inclined plane is .

When X = mg, the particle P is in equilibrium and on the point of sliding down the plane. (2m)

3. A particle P of weight 40 N lies at rest in equilibrium on a fixed rough horizontal surface.

A force of magnitude 20 N is applied to P. The force acts at angle ș to the horizontal, as
shown in Figure 2. The coefficient of friction between P and the surface is .
Given that the particle remains at rest, show that
