Mountaineering – is often referred as alpinism which means climbing with difficulty/ climbing the alps

Hiking – is done on man-made road or well-made trails and basically shorter in distance

Trekking – more rigorous such that it is done over a variety of terrain and takes a longer time to hike

History of Mountaineering in the Philippines:

First two attempts to reach the highest peak of Mt. Apo was recorded by Jose Oyanguren in 1852 and
Senor Real in 1870. But both failed to reach the peak. It was in October 10, 1880 when Don Joaquin Rajal
successfully reach the peak of the mountain.
Climb Organization
The Team Leader: The team leader is selected according to his/her familiarity with the mountain and his/her leadership potential.
He /She is given an almost absolute role in decision making on that climb. However, he/she should also be open-minded enough to
accept suggestions, especially on decisions involving the safety of the party. The Team leader is responsible to select the team’s
Contact Person.

The Medic: The medic should have a thorough knowledge of first aid techniques. The medic is responsible to bring most of the
needed first aid kit.

The Scribe: The scribe has the duty of documenting the details of the climb.

The Tail: Also known as the “sweeper” who is responsible of bringing up the rear. This person must possess the patience and
ability to motivate people and is familiar with the area.

The Contact Person: The contact person should be present during the pre-climb and has a copy of the itinerary. Is also
responsible for activating a search and rescue team if the team is not contacted within twenty-four (24) hours of the estimated
date/time of arrival.

Orienteering- is an outdoor activity where participants goal is finding the various checkpoints using a especially created detailed
map.

. The first world orienteering match was held in Norway in 1897.
