Kindergarten - Hour of Code

An interactive Christmas card that students program and share with

loved ones! Aligned to the CCSS in both Literacy and Math, your
students will love using this free resource – Scratch – developed by
MIT!

scratch.mit.edu
This coding activity will incorporate the following standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.2a Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun

“I.”
Students will capitalize the first word in each sentence and the pronoun I
when writing code for what the character/s say.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.2b Recognize and name end punctuation.

Students will recognize end punctuation by using it when writing code for what
the character/s say.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.6 With guidance and support from adults, explore a

variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration
with peers.
Students will use Scratch to produce and publish a holiday card to a relative.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as

length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
Students will describe that the amount of time (secs) needed for their loved
one to read their message must increase the longer their message is.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable

attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and
describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two
children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
Students will compare the amount of time (secs) needed for their sentences
and be able to state which sentence needs the most time and which sentence
needs the least time.
