The Several cranes saw a farmer plowing a large field. When the work of plowing was done,
they patiently watched him sow the seed. It was their feast, they thought.
So, as soon as the farmer had finished planting and had returned home, down they flew to the
field and began to eat as fast as they could.
The farmer, of course, knew the cranes and their ways. He had had experience with such birds
before. He soon returned to the field with a sling, but he did not bring any stones with him. He
expected to scare the cranes just by swinging the sling in the air and shouting loudly at them.
At first, the cranes flew away in great terror, but they soon began to see that none of them ever
got hurt. They did not even hear the noise of stones whizzing through the air and as for words, they
would hurt nobody. At last they paid no attention whatever to the farmer.
The farmer saw that he would have taken other measures. He wanted to save at least some of his
grain. He loaded his sling with stones and hit several of the cranes. This had the effect the farmer
wanted, for from that day the cranes visited his field no more.

Lavender
Lavender or lavare in Latin means “to wash” because people used them to bathe
in the past. But now, it is used as scent ingredients in many products such as soap,
shampoo, or detergent.
Lavender originally comes from mountains zones of Mediterranean. It grows well
in sunny and stony habitat. Now, it is wide spread to Australia, United States, Southern
Europe, as well as Indonesia.
Lavender is a short bush with branches that can grow up to 60 centimeters. It has
broad rootstock that produces upright, rod like, leafy, green shoots branches. The gray
green oblong tapered leaves are covered by silvery down and attached directly at the root.
It curled spirally. The flowers are small with blue violet color. They arranged in 6 to 10
blooms. The oil of the flowers radiates the fragrant scent.
The essential oil of the lavender flowers is extracted and used for various medical
purposes, such as a remedy for insomnia, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Research
finding suggested that lavender gives calming, soothing, and sedative effects when we
inhale its scent.

The Legend of Shuteye Island


Once upon a time, an old blind man lived on Pulau Timbun Mata (Shut-Eye Island). He often
sat in the sun outside his house looking after paddy which his grandson had placed there to dry.
Whenever chickens came to eat the paddy, he used a long stick to bang the ground to chase them
away.
One day, his grandson played a trick on him. He caught a couple of crabs on the beach and
placed them on the paddy. They made a noise just like chickens eating the paddy.
“What’s that?” asked the old man. “Don’t you know?” his grandson replied. “Some chickens are
eating the paddy.” The old man banged on the ground with his stick. But the crabs were not
frightened. They continued to eat the paddy. “Ha, ha, Ha!” laughed the boy.
Suddenly, there was a terrible roar like the firing of cannon. An old man with a long white
beard appeared in a cloud of smoke. He pointed his wand at the boy. “You should never laugh at
your grandfather,” he said, “especially as he is blind.”
Before the boy could answer, a strong wind started to blow and the sky became black. A
cloud of red smoke shot out of the top of a hill in the center of the island. Tons of rock and boiling
mud were thrown high into the air. All the houses on the island were destroyed and everyone living
on the island was turned into stone. Even today, if you visit the island, all you can see are some
strange-looking rocks which resemble people.
