DEVOTIONAL
K J Mittleider stated that December 8, 1988 was a tragic day in
Armenia, USSR when at least 25,000 people were destroyed by an
earthquake and possibly thousands more. The reports of Hurricane
Hugo, earthquakes in San Francisco and China, airplane crashes, and the
330 murders in the Washington DC area so far this year have caused
fear in the hearts of people. Satan would destroy all of humanity if
God would permit it, but God is our refuge and help in trouble. He

• said that He has carried us since our birth. He sustains and rescues
us.

The Chairman visited Spithuk in Armenia this year. He saw a

bridge a Seventh-day Adventist believer was crossing when the
earthquake struck, but his life was spared. While the approaches to
the bridge were damaged, it was preserved and has proved strong enough
to carry the heavy equipment after the earthquake. There are only 166
Seventh-day Adventist believers in Armenia, and God watched over the
one on the bridge. Only in the kingdom will God's people learn how the
guardian angels protected them.

F W Wernick offered prayer and mentioned Eugene Stiles,

C L Brooks, and Valda and M J Allen.

MINUTES of the meeting held October 26, 1989 were approved.

DEVOTIONAL

"Are we beginning all over again to produce our credentials? Do

we, like some people, need letters of introduction to you, or from
you? No, you are all the letter we need, a letter written on our
heart; any man can see it for what it is and read it for himself. And
as for you, it is plain that you are a letter that has come from
Christ, given to us to deliver: a letter written not with ink but with
the Spirit of the living God, written not on stone tables, but on the
pages of the human heart."-2 Cor 3:1-3 NEB
"We are epistles, whether we want to be or not," stated
K J Mittleider. People read our actions daily and compare them with
the profession we make about being Christians. How often have we heard
or made the statement, "I don't have to tell people about Christ. If I
just live as a Christian, they will know that I am a Christian." When
you know, accept, and love the Lord, it is impossible not to speak
about it.

Do people see Christ in us? Do we speak for Him at every

opportunity? God is making up His people. Today as we go about our
activities and as we plan our schedules, may it be with the desire to
reveal Christ to the world.

REPORT
The Chairman reported that he and the committee met with Dale
Twomley recently for a day of negotiations for the sale of La Loma
Foods. They are hoping that the sale will be finalized on November 17
and the agreement will be closed on December 8. The sale is for 6.8
million dollars. The La Loma name will be included in the sale for all
products that are not similar to those produced by Worthington Foods.
Due to an agreement made with Nutricia when it purchased Loma Linda
Foods, Nutricia will continue to make the analogs for La Loma through
August 1990.

A 22 million dollar expansion is being built by Worthington Foods

in Ohio and the company will use as many of the La Loma Foods employees
as it can. A moving allowance will be given to those who accept
employment by Worthington.

DEVOTIONAL

The Chairman read Philippians 2:5-10, "Your attitude should be the

same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not
consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself
nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human
likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself

and became obedient to death--even the death on a cross! Therefore God
exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above
every name, that at the name of Jesus ever knee should bow, in heaven
and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."--Philippians 2:5-10
NIV

It has been said that the best thing to do with a picture is to

let it talk. Here Paul lets the picture talk for itself. Your
attitude should be the same as that of Jesus.

Bradford reminisced back to when one took either a snapshot or a

timed exposure. The snapshot could be done quickly but would soon
fade away. The timed exposure seemed to take a long time, but it made
an indellible impression. As we look at this text, it should not be
done as a snapshot, hurriedly. Instead it should be done as a timed
exposure which will make a lasting impression on our minds. It is
after long exposure that His mind controls ours and determines our
attitude, lifestyle, and relationship with others.

PRAYER D E Robinson

REPORTS
It was reported that no damage was done at Oakwood College last

• night when the tornado touched down at Huntsville, Alabama.

89-640
November 16, 1989 - GCC

D E Robinson shared a brief report of his itinerary in Southern

Africa. He attended a Field Session in Windhoek in the South West

Africa Field and one in the Cape Conference. Both union year-end
committees laid major emphasis on Harvest 90.

There are encouraging openings in Namibia, and the Lord's work is

moving ahead. At the time of his visit the political situation was
calm; election results are now coming in and our believers are of good
courage.

The publishing work has grown rapidly. The Southern Publishing

Association can hardly cope with the demand for literature so the
presses are rolling 24 hours a day. It is encouraging to see many
literature evangelists waiting to join the work.

On November 11 a new German church was organized in Somerset West

with 30 members. An Adventist couple built a room in their home large
enough to accommodate 100 worshippers. The group is growing rapidly
with approximately 90 in attendance. A young pastor has come from
Germany to care for the congregation.

J Lynn Martell stated that the September 30, 1989 financial report
indicated an increase in world mission giving of 5.9 percent, tithe 4.8
percent, and Sabbath School one percent in North America.

MINUTES of the meeting held November 9, 1989 were approved.

REPORTS

Enoch Oliveira reported on his visit to the Euro-Africa Division

for the year-end meeting. Remarkable changes have taken place since he
first visited the division nine years ago.

The EUD agenda was totally mission oriented. Each morning and
evening time was spent discussing Harvest 90, Global Strategy, and how
to reach the secular mind as well as Moslem countries such as Morocco,
Algeria, and Tunisia. Frequent breaks were taken in which the
attendees met in groups of two and three for seasons of prayer and
meditation.

The EUD is made up of 26 different political units, 8 languages,

and 14 union conferences, union missions, and unions of churches.

There are 60,000 believers in Romania, which is the largest

concentration of believers in one nation in Europe, and it keeps
growing. It is a union motivated by a great sense of mission.

Some of the highlights that took place in the EUD during the last
year are:

1. As of September 30, 1989 the division has reached almost 90

percent of its goal for Harvest 90. There are now more than 300,000
believers.

2. Churches have been established in Gibraltar and on the

Island of Malta.

3. Successful evangelistic campaigns have been conducted in the

cities of Berlin, Marseilles, Vienna, and Oporto, Portugal with one
thousand attending the meetings every night in Oporto.

89-646
November 30, 1989 - GCC

4. A very spiritual Youth Congress was held in Barcelona, Spain. 6

Four to five thousand young people attended the meetings.

5. Remarkable progress was made in Angola and Mozambique in

spite of the many difficulties caused by war.

6. Bulgaria received permission to print 4,000 hymnbooks,

Sabbath School quarterlies, and Steps to Christ.

The political changes taking place in the EUD are almost

unbelievable. While the report on the German Democratic Republic was
being rendered, the Berlin wall was going down. Thousands of people
were leaving the GDR including hundreds of our believers.

Church membership is growing because the division is taking

seriously the task of proclaiming the redeeming power of Jesus Christ.
We should remember our work in prayer for this great division.

W Conn Arnold offered prayer.

G E Knowles recently visited the USSR, which will become a new

division soon, to discuss departmental prospects and structure.

Remarkable changes are being seen there. Government

representatives attend our meetings, and they are warm and friendly.
Intellectuals and scientists are attending churches to see what
religion has to offer. Scientists come not as skeptics to argue and

criticize but to seek answers to honest questions.

The seminary, which is located in a scientific community, has

approximately 100 visitors a week who inquire about our faith. Many
families are coming to our Sabbath afternoon vespers. One of the
country's leading scientists and his wife have requested baptism.

ADRA, the work of Jacob Mittleider, and the heart team have
attracted a great deal of attention. Our work in this great country
should also be remembered in prayer.

D S Williams reported on the progress of the physical fitness

blastoff for the moon which took place at the General Conference
recently. It is hoped that GC participants in the program will walk,
run, or exercise the distance to the moon before the 1990 General
Conference Session. The group has traveled 6,606 miles thus far. He
stressed the importance of exercise and hoped that everyone here would
become serious about becoming physically fit and maintaining physical
fitness.
