DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
TEST – II
Subject : Advanced Machining Process Subject code : PR 6401
Year / SEM : II / IV Branch : Production
Date / Session : 02/03/2018 / F.N. Time : 1 ½ hours

PART- A (5 x 2 = 10 marks)

1. Which finishing process is used for hard and hardened gears? (K)
2. List the various functions of cutting fluids.(K)
3. What are the requirements of a good tool material? (A)
4. List out the various gear generation process.(K)
5. What is the prime requirement for gear manufacturing using gear hobbing process?(A)

PART-B (2 x 13 = 26 Marks)

6. (a) (i) Tool life tests in turning yield the following data: (1) when cutting speed is 100
m/min, tool life is 10 min; (2) when cutting speed is 75 m/min, tool life is 30 min. (a)
Determine the n and C values in the Taylor tool life equation. Based on your equation,
compute (b) the tool life for a speed of 110 m/min, and (c) the speed corresponding to
a tool life of 15 min. (A)
(10)
(ii) List the factor which will affect the life of tool? (K)
(3)
Or
(b) In a production turning operation, the work part is 125 mm in diameter and 300 mm
long, a feed of 0.225 mm/rev is used in the operation. If cutting speed = 3.0 m/s the
tool must be changed every 5 work parts; but if cutting speed = 2.0 m/s, the tool can be
used to produce 25 pieces between tool changes. Determine the Taylor tool Life
equation for this job. (S)
(13)
7. (a) Compare form gear cutting and generation gear cutting in terms of principle, tools,
finishing, modules, productivity and complexity involved with a neat sketch. (C) (13)

Or
(b) Explain the chip forming mechanism in metal cutting operations and also explain
various types of chip formed during metal cutting. (C) (13)

PART-C (1x14 = 14 Marks)

8. (a) Compare Gear hobbing and Gear shaping process with a neat sketch. (C) (14)
Or
(b) Briefly discuss the gear forming processes in milling machine with form cutter and
end mill cutter. (C)
(14)
