. Even the poets of the modern period, including Bhai Vir Singh (1872-1957), the father of
modern Punjabi literature, have also imbibed its impact.
Sheikh Farid-ud-din, (1173-1265) was the first Sufi poet who sang of his insatiable
hunger for the love of the Lord in works of immortal beauty.
The kavis (lyrics) of Shah Husain (1538-1599), the popular romantic Sufi
saint of Lahore added to Sufi poetry its peculiar element of masti (rapture) and introduced
enraptured dancing and passionate signing. Hussain was also the first Sufi poet of Punjabi
who adopted the popular measure of Kavi to express his mystic ideas. The credit of
introducing the element of the popular love-legends of Punjab (Heer Ranjha and Sohni
Mahiwal) to Sufi.
Verse and utilizing their persons, places, motifs and incidents as images, metaphors and
Sultan Bahu (1629-1691), one of the greatest mystics of India, who belonged to district
Jhang, adopted the verse-form of Shiar (arostic) for the expression of his sentiments, ending
every line of his verse with a lyrical tone of exquisite charm, pronounced as hoo. It was he
who, preferring 'Ishq' (love) not only to 'Aqal' (wisdom) but also to 'Iman (faith).
Syed Ali Haider (1690-1785) of Multan, was the first Sufi who poetized Heer Ranjha
in the form of a Qissa (long narration), entitled Qissa Heer va Ranjha, and added thereby a
new tributary to the stream of Punjabi Sufi poetry.

Syed Bulleh Shah (1680-1758), was the most famous Sufi poet of Punjab. Bhullah's
earlier verses expressed theological ideas of Islam. But when he turned a pantheist under the in
fruence of Vedant and Sikhism, he became so convinced of God's omnipresence and integrity of
the universal soul that he began to experience and express that sort of cosmopolitan joy which
Fard Faqir (1729-1790) who lived during the same time in Gujrat, also reproached the
rulers of the day. But he did so, in verses as the following, for their ill treatment of laborers and
workers belonging to various professions. His kasab nama broke a new ground by describing the
process of wearing cloth for expressing his Sufi stic ideas and beliefs.
Syed Hashim Shah (1735-1843), a highly learned, prolic and multilingual writer who
ourished during the Sikh supremacy in Punjab and who has been mentioned in terms of esteem
even by eminent Western scholars.
In Punjabi, he versied the popular love-tragedies of Punjab to describe and acclaim the 'Kamal
Ishq' (perfect love) of their heroes and heroines (viz. Sassi & Punnu, Heer & Ranjha, Sohni &
Mahiwal, Shirin & Farhad).

Shiv kumar batalvi:He is known for his romantic poetry. His poetry recitations, and singing
his own verse, made him and his work very popular amongst the masses. He became the
youngest recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award in 1967 for his epic verse play Loona. His
poetical works are Peeran Da Paraga (1960), Lajwanti (1961), Aate Dian Chirian (1962), Mainu
Vida Karo (1963), Birha Toon Sultan (1964, a selection), Dardmandan Deean Aaheen (1964),
M S Randhawa: Mohinder Singh Randhawa was a Punjabi brilliant and prominent writer. As
a writer some of his books like beautifying India, beautiful trees and gardens, history of Indian
collaboration )nine collections of kangra, basoli and chamba paintings, four collections of
Kartar singh duggal : .He was honoured as the best litterateur by Punjab Government (1962),
and the Sahitya Akademi awarded its annual prize on the collection of his short stories, Ik chhit
chanan di in 1965. In 1981 he was honoured with the Soviet Land Nehru award. His characters
are generally sex starved and abnormal souls. He portrays his feminine characters vividly but
delicately, delving deep into the very dark recesses of their minds.
Waris shah: Waris Shah was a Punjabi Sufi poet, renowned for his contribution to Punjabi
literature. He is best known for his seminal work Heer Ranjha, based on the traditional folk tale
of Heer and her lover Ranjha. Heer is considered one of the quintessential works of classical
Punjabi literature.

Sardar sobha Singh: One of the greatest Indian artists of twentieth century S. Sobha Singh
was born on 29 Nov. 1901 at Sri Hargobindpur (Gurdaspur), India. He learnt and mastered
painting by self practice. In 1919 he was present in Jalianwala Bagh at the time of ring. Later ,
he joined the British India army as a draughtsman and was posted at various places in Iraq. He
studied European Paintings and got inspiration from the works of English painters.
Gurbux Singh Theathi: Artist Gurbux Singh Theathi was born in Punjab on the 10th of
November 1923. He did his matriculation in 1939 and that very year joined S. Hari Singh, a well
known and a highly talented artist, as an apprentice.In 1941 he enrolled in the Lahore College of
Arts and completed a one year course in Commercial Art and drawing.
G S sohan singh: He is well known, Amritsar is a sacred city of the Gurus, and is the home
of Sikh Art. The late Artist G.S. Sohan Singh worked hard, and raised to super-heights this
cultural heritage passed on to the masses from generations to generations.”G.S. Sohan Singh
Artist Memorial Trust” has been formulated for the preservation and presentation of his major
contribution to our cultural heritage. He was apprenticed with the well-known Artist S. Hari
Singh who had at that time been working in the famous Elphinston Theatrical Company,
Calcutta. Later, in about 1931-32 on the winding up of the company, the master and the pupil
both came back to Amritsar. The Artist’s father had by that time retired from his service in the
Golden Temple, and both father and son started painting religious themes, preparing charts for

Bhai Gian Singh Naqqash: Bhai Gian Singh (1883-1953), a Naqqash or a Fresco-Painter
was born in the city of Amritsar in 1883. His father Taba Singh was a comb-maker by
profession, supplemented his meagre income by dispensing ayurvedic medicines in his spare
time. At the age Gian Singh was sent to school run by Giani Thakur Singh, who later rose into
Bhai mardana: Mardana was the first disciple and lifelong companion of Guru Nanak and his
rebeck player. With all the wit and humor of a Punjabi minstrel, Mardana became a poet and
philosopher in the Guru's company. He was a Muslim by birth and a Mirasi or minstrel
by caste and rebeck player by profession.Guru Nanak changed his name to Mardana meaning brave or
manly.
S.G. Thakur Singh: S.G. Thakur Singh never had proper education owing to his poor family
circumstances. His heart being set upon painting and drawing from a very early age, he apprenticed
himself to Mohammed Alam, a local skilled Mohammedan painter of some repute. From Alam he learnt
the rudiments of the art; later he accompanied Mohammed Alam to Bombay where the latter had secured
Devender Singh: Bhai Devender Singh is an Indian painter and illustrator from Punjab who has
specialised in oil painting with themes from Sikhism and Punjabi popular culture. He has produced
hundreds of painting many relating to the Sikh Gurus and their history.

SCHEMES IN PUNJAB
SHAGUN SCHEMS: - The Scheme was launched by the Punjab government in 1997-98 for
scheduled caste girls and Christian girls. Under this scheme, Rs 15000 is given on the occasion
of marriage of SC and Christian girls (age group 18+). The annual income of the family should
not exceed Rs. 20000 p.a for rural areas and Rs 27500 for urban areas. The widows and divorced
women of these families are also covered provided they fulfill the other conditions.
NEW ATTA DAAL SCHEME: - Launched on Dec 1, 2013. No. of Beneficlaries 1.42 crores.
Eldest women will be the family head. The Beneficiary can go to the consumer court if he does
not get wheat as per his entitle. While will be devlivered in 30 kg standard packing. The
department officials, the beneficiary, the transporter, the village opanchayat, the nigreen
Committee- all will to work in coordination. No upper cap. Every member gets five kg wheat per
month. Annual quota of wheat will be given in one go Atta at Rs.1 per kg and pulses at Rs. 20
per Kg will be distributed. All the present beneficiaries including BPL and AAY (Antodya Ann
Yojna) ration card holders would be eligible for this scheme. Criteria for selection will be
families having annual income less than Rs 60,000 and land less than 2.5 acres. All 100 yard plot
holders in the urban areas would be eligible to new blue cards and avall the benefits of new "atta
dal scheme”.
KANYA JAGRITI JYOTI: - It was launched in 1996 – 97. State funded scheme. Girl child
born on or after 26.01.96 in the familes living below poverty line or annual income below 20,000
are covered in this scheme. The family of the beneficiary will adopt two child norms and only
child is covered under this scheme. The beneficiary wil have to study up to matric. The main
objective this scheme is to uplift the social status of girls and to reduce school dropout. An
amount 5000 is deposited in L.I.C in the name of beneficiary. When she attains the age of 6 yrs,
she will get Rs. 1200/ per annum as scholarship up to 12 years. And this amount will be
increased up to Rs. 2400 from 18/21 years
NANHI CHHAAN: - Mrs. Harsimart Kaur Badal, MP from Bhathinda, launched on 27 th Aug,
2008. It is a novel experiment for protection of girl child and our fragile awareness against
female foeticide and dwindling number of trees.

Guru Granth Sahib: The fifth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Arjan Dev, collected the 'hymans' of the
first four Gurus and of several "Bhagats" and complied them in to a book known as 'Adi Granth'
or 'Pothi Sahib', It included his own "Baani" as well. The Adi Granth was installed in 1604 as the
holy books of Sikhsat Sri Harmandir Sahib Amritsar, with Baba Buddha ji as its first 'Head
Granthi'. This holy book complied by Guru Arjan Dev ji was scribed by Bhai Gurdas.
During his stay Talwandi Sabo, also known as 'Guru ki Kashi', Guru Gobind Singh ji included
the verses by Guru Teg Bahadur ji at appropriate places in Adi Granth with Bhai Mani Singh as
the scribe. This book is now known as Guru Granth Sahib and this scripture was bestowed the
'Guruship' by him before his death in October, 1708 at Nanded. The Gurudwara situated at
Nanded on the bank of the river Godavari is called 'Hazoor Sahib'.
This scripture contains 1430 pages, is composed in 31 rages and contains 5894 hymns. It

located adjacent to Bir. The sanctuary is situated adjacent to Nabhaa town on the Nabha-
Malerkotla road and is spread over 123.43 ha of government area that falls in tehsil Nabha of
Disrict Patiala. This sanctuary harbours many wildlife species such as Rhesus Monkey, Jungle
Cat, Peacock, and Blue bull, Jackal, Black and Grey Partidges etc.
Bir Dosanjh Wildlife Sanctuary – Bir Dosanjh wildlife sanctuary is also situated adjacent to
Nabha town on the Nabha- Jorepul road and is spread over 517.59 ha District Patiala. Blue Bull,
Jungle Cat, Jackal, Rhesus, Monkey, Peafowl, Balck and Grey Partridges etc are found here.
Bir Bhadson Wildlife Sanctuary – This sanctuary falls in District Patiala and is located on the
left side of the Nabha- Bhadson- Gobindgarh road.
Bir Bhunerheri Sanctuary – It is situated near Patiala on the Patiala- Devigarh road covering
an area of 6.5 sq.km. A number of old Shisham and kikar trees are found in the sanctuary, which
provides a good habitat to wildlife. Hog deer and blue bulls are found in this sanctuary.
Harike Wildlife Sanctuary – It is situated on the Amritsar- Ferozpur road. The sanctuary has an
area of 86sq.km. It is a Ramsar site (The Ramsar Convention in a convention on wetlands of
international importance adopted in Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and came into force in 1975)
of international importance.
The lake area is prone to the serious menace of water hyacinth, siltation and waster pollution.
The Harike wetland is situated at ataeh confluence of the Beas and the Satluj. The presence of
dolphins has been confirmed by scientists at this sanctuary.
Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary – This sanctuary is situated in district Abohar. This sanctuary is
famous for Black Buck and covers on area of 18,650.00 ha. Black Buck and Blue Bull are the
main wildlife species found here.
Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary – Situated at distance of 15 km. from Hoshiarpur on the
Hoshiarpur- Mehengrowal road. This sanctuary is spread over 382.00ha. It hosts a variety of
wildlife species and is rich in floral diversity also. Barking Deer, Pangolin, Python, Hog Deer,
Jungle Cat, Jackle, Mongoose, Wild Boar, Rat Snake and Kalij Pheasant are found in this
sanctuary

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
GHARHA – The simple earthen pitcher serves as a musical instrument in a number of folk
songs. The Gharah player strikes its outer sides with ring worn on the fingers of one hand and
also plays on its open hand to produce a distinct, rhythmic beat.
TOOMBA – Toomba is a famous folk instrument of Punjab, which is entirely based on Iktara
(Single- stringed instrument), used by the legendary singers. Toomba is made of wooden sticks
mounted with a Toomba or wooden resonator covered with skin.
RABAB – Is a lute-like musical instrument originating from central Afghanistan. Though it is
national instrument of Afghanisten, this instrument was used by Mardana, the first disciple of
Guru Nanak who was his constant companion and played it to the "hymans" composed by the
guru. It became an essential component of Punjabi Hymans, though it is constructed differently.
DHOL – The dhol is a barrel- shaped wooden drum with skin mounted on both sides. It is
played with two different types of wooden sticks.
DHAD – Dhad is a small instrument of the Damru style. This instrument has been very popular
with the Dhadies, Who sing traditional ballads of brave warriors and heroes drawn from history.
CHIMTA – This instrument consists of two long, flat pieces of iron with pointed ends, and rings
mounted on it. The joint is held in one hand, while the two parts are struck with each other to
produce tinkling sounds. Chimta has become popular in professional singing and devotional
music in temples.
SARANGI – It is wooden instrument about two feet long, cut from a single log covered with
parchment. This is used for accompaniment by artists and is an ideal instrument to produce
different kinds of notes.
BUGDU – This is a stringed instrument made of dried gourd (Ghia). A piece of skin is
mountained on one side of the hollowed gourd while the other side is kept open.
