POLICE INTELLIGENCE

1. WHY DO POLICE ENGAGE IN SURVEILLANCES AND UNDERCOVER OPERATIONS?

 To go "undercover" is to avoid detection by the entity one is observing, and especially to disguise one's own
identity or use an assumed identity for the purposes of gaining the trust of an individual or organization to
learn or confirm confidential information or to gain the trust of targeted individuals in order to gather
information or evidence. Traditionally, it is a technique employed by law enforcement agencies or private
investigators, and a person who works in such a role is commonly referred to as an undercover agent.

2. WHAT ARE THE PURPOSE OF SURVEILLANCE?

 The purpose of surveillance is to try to detect where disease organisms, such as bacteria and viruses, might
be located in Texas in order to predict and prevent human illness. ... Active surveillance is a process
whereby state or local agencies actually look for evidence of disease risk.

3. DISCUSS THE FIXED POST OR STAKE OUT IN SURVEILLANCE. WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT MAY
INVESTIGATOR’S USE?
 The fixed surveillance, or "stakeout," requires officers to surreptitiously observe people and places from a
distance. Variations include the one- and two-person surveillance methods. According to author and
criminal justice professor Michael Palmiotto, the two-person approach is considered more desirable. It
allows officers to periodically switch positions, reducing a suspect's chances of spotting them. By contrast,
an officer assigned to one-person surveillance can't take his eyes off the scene and has nobody to relieve
him.

4. DISCUSS THE VARIOUS MOVING SURVEILLANCE. One on one foot, two officer foot, three officer foot, foot
automobile, one on one automobile, multi automobile.

One on one foot - A  one-man  surveillance  is best  used  in  asituation calling for a fixed surveillance.  It should be
avoided in a moving surveillance because it is not flexible.  If a moving one-man surveillance must be used, operate
behind the subject when on the same side of the street.  Keep as close as possible to observe his actions or make a
successful apprehension at the right time

5. DEFINE ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE.

 surveillance or the gathering of information by surreptitious use of electronic devices, as in crime detection
or espionage.

6. WHAT ARE THE MAIN CONSIDERATIONS IN PREPARING FOR SURVEILLANCE?

 The role of the surveillance investigator is to collect information for the furtherance of an investigation.
Most cases do not transition from a stationary surveillance to a felony traffic stop, as popular belief would
suggest. Accurate observation and credible reporting should be considered the final product and the overall
objective of a successful surveillance case. The differences between police and security help to clarify the
importance of surveillance in the investigative process.

7. WHAT EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, AND OTHER OBJECTS OR MATERIALS ARE OR MAYBE NEEDED FOR
SURVEILLANCE?
 It covers recorders, cameras, intercept systems and network surveillance systems.
8. DISCUSS THE SPECIAL TECHNIQUES AND TRICKS OF THE TRADE IN SURVEILLANCE.
 Physical Surveillance. Long before technological advancement, surveillance was all
about trusting the human eye. ...
 Audio Surveillance. ...
 Video Surveillance. ...
 Vehicular Surveillance.

9. WHAT ARE THE PURPOSE OF UNDERCOVER WORK AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM SURVEILLANCE.
 The objective of surveillance is to collect evidence, while the objective of
an undercover investigation is to expose and possibly detain the suspect. The functions of the
investigator in surveillance require him or her to stay concealed while performing the operation.
