Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 1

Chapter I

The Problem: Rationale and Background

Introduction

Have you ever experienced sleep-deprived? If yes, how

did it affect your emotional, mental, and physical
performance?

Sleep deprivation is a condition caused by

insufficient amount of sleep.1It can cause accidental death,
yawning, memory problems, hallucinations, micro Sleep,
weakened immune response, impaired brain activity,
moodiness, and depression.

According to the researcher of this study, being

sleep-deprived can affect the productivity of a person. She
had encountered dizziness and mood swings throughout the
day which caused her to become unfocused of her studies.

Sleep deprivation has been negatively related to

academic performance. “Sleep-deprived students perform
worse on attention, memory, and problem-solving tasks and
this adversely affect their academic performance (Curcio,

Ferrara, and Gennaro, 2006). 2While the old adage “practice

makes perfect” has an irrevocable truth to it, the results
of many studies have indicated that time can have an
important influence on motor skill learning. In addition,
many studies have demonstrated that sleep after learning
improves memory performance.

The significance of this study is to determine what

causes sleep deprivation of the Grade 10 students. The
researcher is specially interested in finding out how sleep
deprivation affects their academic performance.

1.1 Background of the Study

One of the major concerns of AMA Paranaque College is

the academic performance of their students, especially the
graduating ones. This is in view of the fact the degrees in
which the students are able to deal with their studies and
accomplish the tasks given to them reflect the quality of
education offered by the school. The researcher decided to
conduct this study to find out how sleep deprivation among
the grade 10 Students affects their academic performance.

3Based on the study of Laviolette from Sleep

Science, Elseiver B. V. 2010,

The study group consisted of 39 healthy children,

aged 7-11 years old. Sleep recording were taken for
four consecutive nights to determine habitual week-
night sleep duration in the home environment. The
study group has proven that short sleep duration is
associated with poor performance on IQ measures in
healthy school-age children. Longer habitual sleep
duration in healthy school-age participant was
associated with better performance on measures of
perceptual reasoning and overcall IQ, as measured by
the WISC-IV, and on reported measures of competence
and academic performance.

Though there are many researchers who agreed with

the study of Laviolette, there are still some who
disagreed.

4According to the study of MuhannadSeyam titled

“The Secret Benefits of Sleep deprivation 2010”, he
concluded, “There’s evidence of anti-depressive effect
after sleep deprivation. As a matter of fact, subjects
experienced a 37.2% improvement in their mood.
Biochemical investigations proved an increase of
different hormones, including serotonin and non-
adrenaline, which are also known to function as a
happiness hormone (serotonin) and stimulating hormone
(non-adrenaline). When children are happy, they enjoy
learning.

5Sleep is vital for the normal function of the

systems of an individual. It is regularly a recurring
condition of rest for the body and mind for repair and
growth, learning or memory consolidation and
restorative performance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

Sleep deprivation, a condition caused by inadequate

sleep, affects the academic performance of students. Many
reviews that support this study are shown in this
chapter.

2.1 Related Legal Bases

Sleep deprivation can affect the mental and emotional

ability of students. They may misbehave during their class
and this could negatively affect their academic
performance.

6Republic Act No. 7610 known as the "Philippine Act

Providing Child Protection and Development of 2003" stated
in their 5th section, article III, that children who do not
get adequate sleep are at an increased risk for involvement
in various forms of delinquency and risk tasking behaviors.
The negative effects of sleep deprivation to the minds of
children can be extremely problematic. A good quality sleep
can improve the mental and emotional ability of a child.

Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 15

According to 7DO 47, s. 2012 Implementation of the

School-Based HIV and AIDS Education Program (SBHAEP)
Section 2: Article I, self-control is not about haves or
have nots. Instead, a teenager's self-control is more
malleable in response to decisions that families and teens
make regarding health and lifestyle. Healthy practices,
like developing a good sleep schedule, could lower risk of
child crime and delinquent behavior. Getting adequate sleep
can improve the academic performance of students. When they
are able to choose the right thing to do inside the
classroom, they are capable of dealing with their studies
and accomplishing the tasks given to them.

2.2 Related Literature

8According to Miguel Sangro, 2010, less sleep will make

a child more active in class. It is because when a child
sleeps less, her/his happy hormones are increased.

Similarly, 9Alaister Hill, 2012, stated "Sleeping late

can also positively affect children. It is because working
at night is quieter, cooler, and has almost zero

distractions. In my opinion, it is the best time for

them to do their assignments and projects."

On the other hand, 10Michael Breus defined sleep in his

article Good, Sound Sleep for Your Child last 2012, as
something that is no less than food, drink, or safety in
the lives of children. It is the power source that keeps
your mind alert and calm.

Several articles agree with the statement of Michael

Breuss including the article of Dr. Mercola, How Dangerous
is Sleep Deprivation Really?, published last March 27,
2011.11"Sleep is every bit important for every person as
healthy food, pure water, and exercise, and I am not alone
in that sentiment." Dr. Mercola stated.

The ability to learn of a child can be affected by

sleep deprivation in various ways.

12According to Sheena Recabe, sleeping well increases

brainpower, attention span and allows you to be physically
relaxed and mentally alert at the same time. (is Sleep

13Dr. Robert Scott-Jupp of the Royal College of

Pediatrics and Child Health stated "Less sleep makes
children less intelligent; however, it is clearly more
complicated than that. While it's likely that social and
biological brain development factors are inter-related in
a complex way, in my own opinion, for school-age children
to perform their best, they should all, whatever their
background, get a good night's sleep.", during his
interview on BBC News last 2013. Moreover, the blog post
14Why Sleep Deprivation Can Affect Your Child's Performance
in School of Dr. Joseph Rosen last September 25, 2013,
states "Lack of sleep can affect your child's school
performance in two major ways. First, when they are in
their class, they have trouble paying attention because of
their difficulty focusing. Second, children from their
memories best during sleep."

Likewise, 15Anna Nastille stated "Not getting enough

sleep due to sleep disruptions and short sleep cycles can
cause reduced alertness, concentration, and awareness,
slower reaction time, poorer ' memory, moodiness, poor
decision making, and microsleep." (Effects of Sleep Loss
on Children 2012) Furthermore, 16Kyla Boyse, a registered
nurse, explains in the article Sleep Problems 2010 on the

Of Michigan Health System website, that a tired child

is unable to focus on tasks and this affects their ability
to learn.

17In an interview at Scholastic.com last September 6,

2010, child-development expert Mary SheedyKurcinka stated
"Children who are sleep-deprived have trouble managing
emotions and may seem irritable or whinny."

Also, 18Joanna Santillan defined sleep deprivation in

her article What to do with Sleep Deprivation in Kids,
last 2010, as a root cause of many problems that shows up
almostand every day: fatigue, learning concentration
difficulties, and accidents. She also stated "Everyone can
be affected by sleep deprivation especially children. Why?
Because there are a lot of things that capture their
attention nowadays. They get caught up with most of these
and forget to log a full length of sleep."

In conclusion, sleep is vital for children because

they are constantly growing and developing. The effects of
sleep deprivation are huge contributing factors in the
performance level of children in school and at play, and
in their growth process.

Foreign Studies

According to the research of 19Sephra Snyder titled

The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Individual
Productivity 2008, done in Marshall University,
Huntington, West Virginia, sleep is very important to the
well-being of children. The link between a lack of sleep
and a child's behavior is not always obvious. The survey
showed that 95% of children who lack sleep become hyper,
disagreeable, and have extreme changes in behavior.

When a child does not behave properly inside the

classroom, there is a possibility that he/she may get low
grades.

In addition, a study at 20Toronto's Sunnybrook

Hospital investigated how sleep affects the brain during
the year 2008. The research of Dr. Lim proved that people
with the most fragmented sleep also had the smallest
volumes in the frontal lobes, which is the area of the
brain that is important for higher thought. His study
proved that waking up at night seems to be associated with
memory problems after finding out that 88% of his patients

who suffer from poor memory slept late or had fragmented

sleep when they were young.

Having memory problems may affect the academic

performance of children. It is because they will have a
hard time memorizing or reviewing their notes for their
quizzes and exams.

The study by the 21Canadian Health Foundation 2015

Surveyed 500 students between the ages of 12 and 15
and found 33 percent of them were only getting four to six
hours of sleep. The main cause of their sleep deprivation
is playing computer games.

There are many causes of sleep deprivation and one of

these is children tend to play computer games late at
night. This may negatively affect their academic
performance because they spend more time playing games
than doing school works.

On the contrary, according to the researchers of the

22University of Madrid, after analyzing the sleeping
patterns of 1,000 students during the year 2009, they
found that those who went to bed later scored higher on
inductive reasoning tests, a test normally associated with
general intelligence.

23According to the BBC (2011), a team of researchers

in Westminster analyzed the saliva of 42 volunteers with
different sleep schedules eight times throughout the day
for two days. After analyzing all the samples, they found
that the people who slept and woke up earlier had higher
levels of cortisol, the body's main stress hormone, than
those who like to sleep late.

When children are less stressed, they can focus more

on their studies and this could positively affect their
academic performance.

Local Studies

According to the study of 24Jose Enriquez titled

Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Silliman University
College Students 2011 done in Dumaguete City, "sleep-
deprivation could lead to significant functional
impairment at school. Students who did not get enough
sleep had worse grades than those who did". His study
found out 59 out of 100 selected students from Silliman
University College get to grades because of sleep
deprivation.

A study of 25Dr. Michael Sarte from Pinoy MD last 2013

showed that sleeping late causes weakened immune system,
Memory problems, depression, and hypertension. It also
showed that 7 out of 10 Filipinos die because of getting
insufficient amount of sleep.

When students are unhealthy, they may have many

absences from their class. It could negatively affect
their academic performance because they will miss new
lessons if they are usually absent.

Likewise,26a research from DepEd last 2015 showed that

students who spend several hours each day staring into
mobile phones or smart phones tend to change their
sleeping habits and stay up late to use the devices. It
showed, for instance, that 53.5 percent of junior high
students, who said they use a mobile phone for more than
four hours a day to talk, send email or surf the Net,
habitually de not get to sleep until after midnight. That
ratio was much lower, at 14.9 percent, for those who don't
use mobile phones at all The research also found• that
overusing mobile phones affects the quality of students'
sleep.

considering the amount of sleep they will get and because

of that, they may get low grades.

Meanwhile, a research of 27Angelica Sison titled The

Effects of Sleep Deprivation among High School Students
2012 done in St. John Integrated School, Angeles City,
surveyed 265 high school students and found 55 percent of
them benefit from sleeping late.

Also, a research of 28Monalyn Grafil titled Sleep

Quantity Versus Sleep Quality 2011 done in College of San
Benildo, Rizal, concluded that people who sleep less than
8 hours are more energetic than those who sleep early.
When children are energetic, they will be more active in
class and this could positively affect their class
performance. It is because when a child is energetic,
he/she will have enough confidence to recite in front of
the class.

yes or no survey was used by the researcher in this study.
Multiple choice and yes or no survey were used because
they were an approach to problem-solving sought to answer
questions to real facts relating to existing conditions.
Descriptive-status research design was most suitable for
this study. It merely identified and sought for unrevealed
facts regarding to an existing condition which is "Sleep

3.3 Research Instrument

The researcher used the multiple choice and yes or no

survey for the gathering of data in determining the impact
of sleep deprivation to that grade of a student.

The multiple choice survey being conducted by the

researcher had three parts. Part I was consisted of the
basic information of the personal data of the students
such as age, gender, and general average (S.Y. 2016-2017).
Part II was consisted of a multiple choice and Part III
was consisted of questions answerable by yes or no that
would answer the questions given in the statement of the
problem.

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

Having found the multiple choice and yes or no survey

valid and reliable, the researcher asked permission from
the principal of the school, Mrs. Silverio, and the grade
10 St. Meinrad of Einsiedeln adviser, Mrs. Mhine Rodriquez
Hashniya, to allow the researcher to conduct the said
study. When approved, the researcher let the 9 grade 10
students answer the said survey in their respective
classroom. The gathering of data was conducted on February
14, 2018.

3.5 Data Processing Method

After the retrieval of the multiple choice and yes or

no survey, the researcher tabulated, processed, organized,
analyzed, and assessed, the degree of sleep deprivation
and its effects to the academic performance of the grade
10 students. Finally, the responses were categorized
accordingly.

3.6 Statistical Treatment

The statistical techniques used in analyzing and

interpreting the data and testing the null hypothesis of
the study included the percentage and Pearson's r. The
Pearsons's r was used to determine the "Effects of Sleep

Summary of Findings, Conclusions, and

Recommendation

This chapter presented a brief summary of the study,

the significant findings to answer the specific questions
of the study, conclusions drawn, and the recommendations
offered.

5.1 Summary of Findings

This study sought to answer the issues regarding Sleep

Deprivation and Its Effects to the Academic Performance of
the Grade 10 Students.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in

terms of:
1.1 Age;
1.2 Gender; and
1.3 General Average for S.Y. 2016-2017? ;

2. How many students are sleep-deprived? ;

3. What is their average sleeping pattern? ;

4. What is the main cause of sleep deprivation? ;

Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 42

5. What is the negative effect of sleep deprivation to

their academic performance? ;

6. What is the positive effect of sleep deprivation? ;

and

7. What is the correlation between sleep-deprived Grade

10 students to those who are not in relation to their

academic performance?

Based on the results of analyses of the data the findings

Were summarized as follows:

1. Demographic Profile. In terms of age, 22 or 73.33%

were 15-16 years old and two or 26.67% grade 10
students were 17 years old. The total number of boys
was 7 or 70% and the total number of girls was 2 or
30%. In general average (S.Y. 2016-2017), 5 or 43.33%
of them got 85-90%. It was followed by 91-95% which
was consisted of two or 32.67% of them.

2. Number of Sleep-deprived Students .5 or 47.67% of the

Grade 10 St. Meinrad of Einsiedeln respondents slept
late for four times or more in a week. This was
followed by three times which was consisted of 2 or
26.33% of them. When added, a total of 20 or 66.67% of
the Grade 10 St. Meinrad of Einsiedeln respondents
were sleep-deprived.
Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 43

3. Average Sleeping Pattern. In terms of their average

sleeping pattern, most of the grade 10 students only
got 4-5 hours of sleep with 6 or 73.33%. This was
followed by 8 hours and above and 6-7 hours with 3 or
14%.

4. Main Cause of Sleep Deprivation. Most of the students

got insufficient amount of sleep because of doing
their social media with the total of 6 or 48.67% of
their population. This was followed by assignment and
projects with the total of 2 or 34.22%.

5. Negative Effect of Sleep Deprivation. Most of the

students got unfocused whenever they are sleep-
deprived with 53.33%. This was followed by all of the
above with 3 or 33.67%.

6. Positive Effect of Sleep Deprivation. 25 or 83.33% of

the grade 10 students stated that they become active
inside the class whenever they were sleep-deprived.
This was followed by getting high scores in quizzes,
exams, and, seat works with the total of 23 or 76.67%.

7. The Correlation between Sleep-deprived and Not Sleep-

deprived Students in Relation to Their Academic
Performance. The Pearson's r correlation coefficient
of sleep-deprived and not sleep-deprived grade 10
students who got 85% and below gen. average and 86%
and above gen. average for S.Y. 2016-2017 was -1.00.
This indicated that a perfect relationship existed
Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 44

between sleep deprivation and the academic performance

of the Grade 10 St. Meinrad of Einsiedeln students. It
was also negative and showed an inverse relationship
about the effects of sleep deprivation to academic
performance.

5.2 Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following

conclusions were drawn:

1. Majority of the grade 10 students were 15-16 years

old. Most of them were boys and got 86-90% general
average (S.Y. 2016-2017). Thus, the null hypothesis,
that was the demographic profiles of the students were
not mentioned, was rejected.

2. Many of the grade 10 students were not aware about the

possible effects of sleep deprivation. Most of them
were also used to sleeping late and waking up early
without considering how sleep deprivation might affect
their health and academic performance. Thus, the null
hypothesis that there are no sleep-deprived grade 10
students was rejected.
Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 45

3. Majority of the grade 10 students did not set their

sleep schedule. Many of them did not get adequate
sleep for their age. This meant that the null
hypothesis, which was the grade 10 students have no
specific sleeping pattern, was rejected.

4. Some of the grade 10 students found that doing

assignments, projects, and home works an excuse for
being sleep-deprived. The students had not practiced
their time-management skills. They tended to
prioritize unimportant things such as computer games
and social media before doing their assignment,
projects, and home works. Thus, the null hypothesis,
which was sleep deprivation has no main cause, was
rejected.

5. Majority of the grade 10 students were not concerned

about the negative effects of sleep-deprivation. They
did not value the amount of sleep they got each night
that caused them to become hyperactive inside the
classroom and committed simple forms of delinquency.
Therefore, the null hypothesis, which was sleep
deprivation has no negative effect, was rejected.
Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 46

6. Most of the students did not value how sleep

deprivation might affect not only their health, but
also their academic performance. They were satisfied
with the positive effects of sleep deprivation, which
was activeness, so they did not consider finding an
aid for their sleep deprivation. Thus, the null
hypothesis that was sleep deprivation has no positive
effect rejected.

7. The Pearson's r correlation coefficient of sleep-

Deprived and not sleep-deprived grade 10 students in
relation to their academic performance was -1.00
(Perfect Inverse Relationship). Though the result was
negative, the null hypothesis, which was there is no
correlation between sleep-deprived grade 10 students
to those who performance, was still rejected. This
meant that a perfect relationship existed between
sleep deprivation and academic performance but since
it was a negative relationship, this meant that
whenever a student gets sleep deprived more often,
his/her academic performance decreases. In other
words, when the number of sleep-deprived students was
increasing, the academic performance of the grade 10
students was decreasing.

5.3 Recommendations

Based on the aforementioned conclusions, the

following recommendations are hereby offered:

To the Parents,

A. In order to lessen the chances of having sleep-

deprived children, parents should be aware about
the time their child/children sleep/s and what
keep/s them awake late at night.

B. Parents should give house rules regarding the

avoidance of sleep deprivation.

C. Parents should know how to identify if their

child/children is/are sleep-deprived so that they
may find an aid to stop their sleep deprivation.

To the Students,

A. Students should consider sleep as an important

factor that affects their academic performance.

B. Students should know the amount of sleep they

should get according to their age.

C. Students should practice their time management

skills so that they may avoid staying up late at
night.
Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 48

D. Students should start aiming to do well inside

their class by avoiding sleep deprivation. To the
Teachers, a. Teachers should inform their
students about the negative effects of sleep
deprivation.

To the Teachers,

A. Teachers should inform their students about the

negative effects of sleep deprivation

B. If there is a sleep-deprived student inside their

class, teachers should ask them what causes their
sleep deprivation so that they may inform the
parents or guardians of the student about his/her
condition.

To the Teachers,

A. Adults should serve as good examples to children

so that they may realize that sleep deprivation.

B. Adults should inform young people about the

benefits they may get if they live a healthy life

To the Teachers,

A. Schools should know if their students are sleep-

deprived because sleep deprivation lessens the
academic performance of students and this will
Effects of Sleep Deprivation to the Grade 12 Students | 49

reflect the quality of education given by the

school.

B. They should help find an aid for sleep

deprivation.

To the Readers,

A. They must not be satisfied with the positive effects

of sleep deprivation to the mood of people. They
should be aware that sleep deprivation is still
negatively related to their health and this could
affect anything they do.

B. They should set a healthy sleep schedule. It is

because sleeping at different times can affect the
performance of the mind.
