Hello everyone in JVEA class,

How are you this wek? I hope all of you are having nice Tuesday.
By the way, have you checked the 1st personal assignment? When you do, you might be surprised.
How come the words are so difficult? Well, in Reading TOEFL iBT questions about vocabulary (or
synonym) are quite a lot. It doesn't mean that we have to understand the real meaning of the word,
but we really should read the context of the passage and then find the best word that can replace it.

EXAMPLE:

At first, it would appear that this question is impossible to answer. To find out how grammar is
created, someone needs to be present at the time of a language's creation, documenting its
emergence.  Many historical linguists are able to trace modern complex languages back to earlier
languages, but in order to answer the question of how complex languages are actually formed, the
researcher needs to observe how languages are started from scratch.  Amazingly, however, this is
possible.

 1. From "scratch" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to:

 A from the very beginning

 B in simple cultures

 C by copying something else

 D by using written information

The best answer is A "From the very beginning".

So don't give up yet, always improve your vocabularies and keep on practicing. In the past, one of
exercise I did to memorize vocabularies are finding 10 new vocabularies every week and use them
in writing or speaking. Now, I want to share these words:

Influential :
If your grandfather worked his whole life in a circus and inspired you to wear clown shoes, you could
describe your grandfather as very influential in your life. Something that exerts influence or power
can be called influential.

Zenith:
Zenith means the high point — it comes from astronomy, where it describes the highest point in an
arc traveled by a star or a planet or another celestial body. The sun reaches its zenith when it is as
high in the sky as it is going to go on that day.

Complement
A complement is something that makes up a satisfying whole with something else. Those shiny red
shoes you just bought complement your shiny red purse.

Compliment
A compliment is an expression of respect or admiration, like, "You're such a good writer," or "You
know so many words!" Keep them coming.

So what new word(s) have you known/learned this week? Share us your stories. Words with context
are easier to remember. Did any of you like to watch English TV Shows such as Game of Thrones or
maybe NCIS? Share at least 5 new words that you have learned this week or last week.
