Date Determination of specific gravity of coarse aggregate

Aim:
To determine the specific gravity of given coarse aggregates.

Apparatus:
 10 Kg capacity balance with weights
 Cylindrical containers of 1 liter and 5 liter capacities
 Measuring jar of 1000 ml capacity
 vessel
 Tray
 oven

Procedure

 Take 1 kg of coarse aggregate in natural state.

 Sieve the sample using IS sieve that pass through 12.5 mm sieve and retained in 20
mm sieve
 Take 1 kg gram of sample for test. Record this weight in the observation sheet as W
which is 1000 gram.
 This sample is transferred to vessel and fills the vessel partially with distilled water.
Cover the vessel by keeps it away any entrapped inside the vessel.
 The vessel is wipe cleaned with clean clothes and weighed in weigh balance which is
recorded as W1 in observation.
 Allow the sample in immerse condition for 24 hrs.
 Empty the contents of vessel by pouring in a tray by separate out aggregrate from
suspension of water.
 Wipe the sample with clothes and keep it the aggregate with no water under
suspension.
 Keep the sample in a tray.
 The vessel is completely filled with distilled water .Weighed in weigh balance which
is recorded as W2.
 Sample in a tray is transferred in dry conditioned vessel. Weigh the sample in that
condition in weigh balance which is recorded as W3 in observation.
 Keep the sample in the vessel and then placed in oven at a temperature of 100 ͦc for 24
hrs.
 After 24 hrs the sample is taken out from the oven and weighed in weigh balance
which is noted as W4
Observation

1. Weight of sample taken W= g

2. Weight of sample + weight of vessel W1 = g

3. Weight of sample + water + vessel W2 = g

4. Weight of saturated surface dry sample W3 = g

5. Weight of oven dried sample W4 = g

Calculation

Specific gravity of coarse aggregate can be calculated as

W4
Specific gravity Gca =
W3-(W1-W2)

Where

W1 - Weight of sample + weight of vessel + water

W2 –Weight of vessel +water

W3- Weight of saturated surface dry sample

W4- Weight of oven dried sample

Result

Specific gravity of given coarse aggregate sample ________

Date Determination of specific gravity of fine aggregate

Aim:
To determine the specific gravity of given coarse aggregates.
Apparatus:
 10 Kg capacity balance with weights
 Pychnometer
 Cylindrical containers of 1 liter and 5 liter capacities
 Measuring jar of 1000ml capacity
 Tray
Procedure

 Take approximately 2 Kg of fine aggregate in saturated surface condition.

 Take 500 gram of sample for test. Record this weight in the observation sheet as W3
which is 500 gram.
 This sample is transferred to pycnometer and fills the pycnometer partially with
distilled water any entrapped air is eliminated by stirring the contents of pycnometer
with glass rod.
 The pycnometer is completely filled with distilled water.Hole of apex of the cone is
covered with finger and the assembly is shaken to remove any entrapped air.
 Fill the cone of the pycnometer with distilled water using wash bottle.
 Pycnometer is wipe cleaned with clean clothes and weighed in weigh balance which
is recorded as W1 in observation
 Empty the contents of pycnometer by pouring in a tray .Pouring the contents of
pycnometer thoroughly by wash water.
 Refill the pycnometer with water and weighed in weigh balance which is recorded as
W2
 Replace the soil sample contents from tray into glass beaker without segregation and
until the residue of soil from the tray to glass beaker
 Collect the sample in a tray and then placed in oven at a temperature of 100 ͦc for 24
hrs.
 After 24 hrs the sample is taken out from the oven and weighed in weigh balance
which is noted as W4
Observation

1. Weight of sample taken W = g

2. Weight of sample + weight of pychnometer + water W1 = g

3. Weight of pychnometer + water W2= g

4. Weight of saturated surface dry sample W3 = g

5. Weight of oven dried sample W4 = g

Calculation

Specific gravity of fine aggregate can be calculated as

W4
Specific gravity Gfa =
W3-(W1-W2)

Where,

W1 - Weight of sample + weight of pychnometer + water

W2 –Weight of pychnometer + water

W3- Weight of saturated surface dry sample

W4- Weight of oven dried sample

Result
