A Plastic Ocean

1. What are three facts in the movie that struct you the most?
 Microplastics are small pieces and fragments of plastics that are results of plastics
breaking down into minute and infinitesimal pieces overtime. Microplastics may
be the reason why pollution, specifically water pollution caused by plastics may
be difficult to reverse, or difficult to accumulate and reduced. These microplastics
often can be found in large bodies of water where ocean waves may lead them to
where they are right now. These microplastics affects the environment in which
marine animals may be present, more specifically it changes the food chain in the
bodies of water, which these plastics are considered dangerous when consumed
by animals.
 Following the statement above, fishes and other animals may consume these
plastics, which would most likely kill them. The most affected animals that were
mentioned in the documentary were fish, whales, turtles, and seabirds. Fish
usually feed on plankton, which they may find difficult to differentiate between
plastic. Whales swallow liters of water in order to feed themselves, which among
those present in the water are plastics, which obviously would be harmful to them.
Turtles usually feed on jellyfish, and like fishes, they too can find it difficult to
differentiate between plastics and their true prey.
 And lastly, plastics present in water do not only affect the marine animals, but
also us humans. Fish are considered as a protein source for most humans, and
these fishes may have plastics present in them. When we consume fish that has
chemicals or fragments of plastic with them, this may harm the functions of a
human body, specifically estrogenic functions. It may cause visible abnormalities
in humans which is caused by chemicals that attack the person’s organs or cells
that usually is of importance to the human body. Additionally, this does not only
apply to our consumption of fish, but also swimming or submerging ourselves in
water polluted by plastics.
2. What is your environmental plan now?
- As a citizen of a third world country, plastics are somewhat of a necessity since it’s
cheap and accessible. But there are plenty of alternatives to plastic that are also cheap
like paper, plants, etc. But then the most affected would be those people in poverty or
those who do not have a choice to when it comes to choosing what is right. But I
guess, I could possibly adjust my lifestyle and set out an example to others, and also
educate others. I would try to lessen my wastes and advocate myself in keeping this
earth green.
