Cause and Effect Of Diabetes

Have you heard of Diabetes Melitus? More commonly referred to as “Diabetes” is

any of various abnormal conditions characterized by the secretion and excretion of excessive

amounts of urine. (Diabetes, 2020). Symptoms often include frequent urination, increased

thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many complications

(Diabetes, 2020). The effects of diabetes on your body also depends on the types you have .

Based on previous findings (Bornstein and Lawrence, 1951) There are two main types of

diabetes

The first type is generally young and is characterized not only by hyperglycaemia but

by rapidly developing ketosis and severe weight loss, and requires insulin to live. The second

type is consists largely of middle-aged obese females with similar grades of hyperglycaemia

and glycosuria, but with no ketosis and no important loss of weight. Their diabetes is easily

controlled by low diets without insulin, particularly if weight is reduced.

Based on data (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018) In 2014, 8.5% of adults

aged 18 years and older had diabetes. In 2016, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million

deaths and in 2012 high blood glucose was the cause of another 2.2 million death. Indonesia

itself is a country that ranks fourth with the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world. Not

only that, diabetes is also the third largest cause of death in Indonesia (REDAKSI, 2018).

Diet is a major factor responsible for causing diabetes. Eating too much of

carbohydrates, fats and proteins are harmful to the body. Our body in general needs a
balanced diet. Too much food hampers the pancreas from performing its function of insulin

secretion. Hence, with insufficient insulin secretion, the blood sugar level rises — leading to

diabetes (Causes of Diabetes, n.d.). Therefore, incidences of diabetes are increased in such

persons who are in a habit of eating foods rich in carbohydrates.

Another cause which can make diabetes happens are; First is obesity. It a major cause

of type 2 diabetes. This is because being overweight is linked to insulin resistance. If your

body fat levels are higher than thirty percent, you have a BMI over 25, or a waist size more

than 90cm for women and 100cm for men, you are at high risk. Second is high levels of

stress, may cause a person to engage in unhealty lifestyle habits. These lifestyle habits can

increase a person’s risk developin diabetes. They include : eating a poor quality diet, low

exercise levels, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

On the other hand, diabetes also have many effects for health. if diabetes is not

treated, serious and long-term health complications can arise, Such as :

First is heart disease and stroke, the are two to four time more common in people with

diabetes. High blood glucose levels increase the rate of plaque buildup in your artery walls.

The plaque makes it difficult for blood to flow through your arteries and can even block it.

Causing heart attack or stroke. Second is kidney damage, diabetes can also damage your

kidneys and affect their ability to filter waste products from your blood. Third, diabetes can

also affect your skin, the largest organ of your body. Along with dehydration, your body’s

lack of moisture due to high blood sugar can cause the skin on your feet to dry and crack.

Finally, diabetes causes diabetic neuropathy, or damage to the nerves. This can affect your

perception of heat, cold, and pain. As a result, it can make you more susceptible to injury.
In conclusion, diabetes is a serious life-threatening disease and must be constantly

monitored and effectively subdued with proper medication and by adapting to a healty life

style. By following the tips on the pictures below :

(DT, 2017)

Even though, diabetes lasts for life and there is no defined cure, but if you do some of those

tips, you can reduce your chances of developing complications from your diabetes.
