1 INTRODUCTION:

M/s RG Buildwell Pvt. Ltd. Uttarakhand offered to Allumera Engineering Solutions Pvt.
Limited, New Delhi vide their WO – MESPL/UKPKG-I & II/AESPL/2020/001 Dated:
27.01.2020 to undertake the measurement of riding quality (roughness index) on the
expressway from km 420.400 to km 500.000, using bump indicator machine calibrated
by CRRI Delhi, Accordingly roughness index measurements were taken on
420+400,423+500, 437+400, 468+200,497+000,500+000 Expressway using calibrated
bump indicator machine from 20.11.2019 in the presence of representatives from Mr.
M/s RG Buildwell Pvt. Ltd., Uttarakhand & M/s Maccaferri Environmental Solutions Pvt.
Ltd. In Uttarakhand.

1.1 Scope and Objective of Works

The study involved the following activates:

(i) Roughness measurements with fifth wheel Bump Integrator on selected lane
and chainages by the client of the main carriageway of expressway from km
420 +400 to km 500+000

(ii) Analysis and Presentation of roughness data in terms of Roughness index

(mm/km)

2 SIGNIFICANCE:

Surface evenness affects the vehicle speed, comfort, costs and safety. A careful
consideration is therefore required to maintain the riding quality during construction
and subsequent maintenance

The Bump Integrator test results gives confidence to the engineers about the riding
quality in line with the recommendations of surface evenness as per standards and
specifications.

Standards recommend road roughness of different type of surfaces and based on its
usage to enable an evaluation of the condition of the surface and establish further
maintenance interventions required.

3 TEST PROCEDURES:

Before starting the test it was ensured that the equipment used for determining
roughness index does have a valid calibration certificate.

The equipment (Towed Fifth Wheel Integrator) consists of a trailer towed by a vehicle.
A standard pneumatic tyre wheel inflated to a tyre pressure of 2.1 kg/ cm² is mounted
within the trailer chassis.

The test is conducted at a speed of (32±1) km/hour

Analysts activate the main switch fitted on the panel board at the beginning of the test
session and switch it off at the end of test session.

The reading of the revolution counter and integrated counter is noted and entered in
the data sheet.

Observed Roughness Index is calculated as the ratio of the cumulative vertical

displacement to the distance travelled and is expressed in mm/km

Corrected Roughness Index is reported after applying necessary calibration factor as

per the calibration certificate requirement.

4. CALIBRATION OF THE EQUIPMENT USED:

The test was carried out by using Automatic Road Unevenness Recorder No ARUR
(JAISA-24), duly calibrated by Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi vide
certificate reference no.CSIR-CRRI/TSD/TSP-962 dated 03.10.2017 valid up to
September 2019.
The calibration equation as per the calibration certificate:

Y= 1.131 X +111.6
R² (Regression Coefficient) =0.999
Where,
Y= Calibrated Roughness, mm/km
X= Observed roughness with ARUR (JAISA-24) mm/km
The same equation has been used while computing the roughness index
5. RECOMMENDED STANDARD:

The maximum permissible value of roughness (mm/km) for road surface are given in Table-
2 of IRC-SP: 16:2004

S. # Type of Surface Condition of Road Surface

Good Average Poor
1 Surface Dressing <3500 3500-4500 >4500
2 Open Graded Premix Carpet <3000 3000-4000 >4000
3 Mix Seal Surfacing <3000 3000-4000 >4000
4 Semi-dense bituminous concrete <2500 2500-3500 >3500
5 Bituminous Concrete <2000 2000-3000 >3000
6 Cement Concrete <2200 2200-3000 >3000
