IMPORTANT:
READ CAREFULLY: This Microsoft End-User License Agreement ("EULA") is a
legal agreement between you (either an individual or a single entity) and
Microsoft Corporation for the Microsoft software product identified above,
which includes computer software and may include associated media, printed
materials, and "online" or electronic documentation ("SOFTWARE PRODUCT").
By installing, copying, or otherwise using the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, you agree
to be bound by the terms of this EULA. If you do not agree to the terms of
this EULA, do not install or use the SOFTWARE PRODUCT; you may, however,
return it to your place of purchase for a full refund.

Software PRODUCT LICENSE

The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is protected by copyright laws and international
copyright treaties, as well as other intellectual property laws and
treaties. The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is licensed, not sold. NOTE: The terms of
a printed, paper EULA which may accompany the SOFTWARE PRODUCT supersede
the terms of any on-screen EULA found within the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. This EULA grants you the following rights:

Applications Software. You may install and use one copy of the
SOFTWARE PRODUCT, or any prior version for the same operating
system, on a single computer. The primary user of the computer on
which the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is installed may make a second copy
for his or her exclusive use on a portable computer.

Storage/Network Use. You may also store or install a copy of

the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on a storage device, such as a network
server, used only to install or run the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on
your other computers over an internal network; however, you
must acquire and dedicate a license for each separate computer
on which the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is installed or run from the storage
device. A license for the SOFTWARE PRODUCT may not be shared or
used concurrently on different computers.

License Pak. If you have acquired this EULA in a Microsoft License

Pak, you may make the number of additional copies of the computer
software portion of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT authorized on the printed
copy of this EULA, and you may use each copy in the manner
specified above. You are also entitled to make a corresponding
number of secondary copies for portable computer use as specified
above.

2. DESCRIPTION OF OTHER RIGHTS AND LIMITATIONS.

Academic Edition Software. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is identified
as "Academic Edition" or "AE," you must be a "Qualified Educational
User" to use the SOFTWARE PRODUCT. If you are not a Qualified
Educational User, you have no rights under this EULA. To determine
whether you are a Qualified Educational User, please contact the
Microsoft Sales Information Center/One Microsoft Way/Redmond, WA
98052-6399 or the Microsoft subsidiary serving your country.

Not for Resale Software. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is labeled

"Not for Resale" or "NFR," then, notwithstanding other sections of
this EULA, you may not resell, or otherwise transfer for value, the
SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation, and Disassembly.

You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the
SOFTWARE PRODUCT, except and only to the extent that such activity
is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this
limitation.

Separation of Components. The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is licensed as a

single product. Its component parts may not be separated for use on
more than one computer.

Rental. You may not rent, lease, or lend the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

Support Services. Microsoft may provide you with support services

related to the SOFTWARE PRODUCT ("Support Services"). Use of
Support Services is governed by the Microsoft policies and programs
described in the user manual, in "online" documentation, and/or in
other Microsoft-provided materials. Any supplemental software code
provided to you as part of the Support Services shall be considered
part of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT and subject to the terms and
conditions of this EULA. With respect to technical information you
provide to Microsoft as part of the Support Services, Microsoft may
use such information for its business purposes, including for
product support and development. Microsoft will not utilize such
technical information in a form that personally identifies you.

Software Transfer. You may permanently transfer all of your rights

under this EULA, provided you retain no copies, you transfer all of
the SOFTWARE PRODUCT (including all component parts, the media and
printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA, and, if applicable, the
Certificate of Authenticity), and the recipient agrees to the terms
of this EULA. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is an upgrade, any transfer
must include all prior versions of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

Termination. Without prejudice to any other rights, Microsoft may

terminate this EULA if you fail to comply with the terms and
conditions of this EULA. In such event, you must destroy all copies
of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT and all of its component parts.

3. UPGRADES. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is labeled as an upgrade, you

must be properly licensed to use a product identified by Microsoft
as being eligible for the upgrade in order to use the SOFTWARE
PRODUCT. A SOFTWARE PRODUCT labeled as an upgrade replaces and/or
supplements the product that formed the basis for your eligibility
for the upgrade. You may use the resulting upgraded product only in
accordance with the terms of this EULA. If the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is
an upgrade of a component of a package of software programs that
you licensed as a single product, the SOFTWARE PRODUCT may be used
and transferred only as part of that single product package and may
not be separated for use on more than one computer.

video, audio, music, text, and "applets" incorporated into the
SOFTWARE PRODUCT), the accompanying printed materials, and any
copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT are owned by Microsoft or its
suppliers. The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is protected by copyright laws and
international treaty provisions. Therefore, you must treat the
SOFTWARE PRODUCT like any other copyrighted material except that
you may install the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on a single computer provided
you keep the original solely for backup or archival purposes. You
may not copy the printed materials accompanying the SOFTWARE
PRODUCT.

5. DUAL-MEDIA SOFTWARE. You may receive the SOFTWARE PRODUCT in more

than one medium. Regardless of the type or size of medium you
receive, you may use only one medium that is appropriate for your
single computer. You may not use or install the other medium on

transfer the other medium to another user, except as part of the
permanent transfer (as provided above) of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.

LIMITED WARRANTY
LIMITED WARRANTY. Microsoft warrants that (a)the SOFTWARE PRODUCT will
perform substantially in accordance with the accompanying written materials
for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of receipt, and (b)any
Support Services provided by Microsoft shall be substantially as described
in applicable written materials provided to you by Microsoft, and Microsoft
support engineers will make commercially reasonable efforts to solve any
problem issues. Some states and jurisdictions do not allow limitations on
duration of an implied warranty, so the above limitation may not apply to
you. To the extent allowed by applicable law, implied warranties on the
SOFTWARE PRODUCT, if any, are limited to ninety (90) days.

CUSTOMER REMEDIES. Microsoft's and its suppliers' entire liability and your
exclusive remedy shall be, at Microsoft's option, either (a)return of the
price paid, if any, or (b)repair or replacement of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT
that does not meet Microsoft's Limited Warranty and which is returned to
Microsoft with a copy of your receipt. This Limited Warranty is void if

NO OTHER WARRANTIES. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law,

Microsoft and its suppliers disclaim all other warranties and conditions,
either express or implied, including, but not limited to, implied warranties
of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and
non-infringement, with regard to the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, and the provision
of or failure to provide Support Services. This limited warranty gives you
specific legal rights. You may have others, which vary from
state/jurisdiction to state/jurisdiction.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law,

in no event shall Microsoft or its suppliers be liable for any special,
incidental, indirect, or consequential damages whatsoever (including,
without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business
interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss)
arising out of the use of or inability to use the SOFTWARE PRODUCT or the
provision of or failure to provide Support Services, even if Microsoft has
been advised of the possibility of such damages. In any case, Microsoft's
entire liability under any provision of this EULA shall be limited to the
greater of the amount actually paid by you for the SOFTWARE PRODUCT or
U.S.$5.00; provided, however, if you have entered into a Microsoft Support
Services Agreement, Microsoft's entire liability regarding Support Services
shall be governed by the terms of that agreement. Because some states and
jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of liability, the
above limitation may not apply to you.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT VIDEO DISPLAYS AND VIDEO DRIVERS

DirectX has replacement drivers available for most major

manufacturers' video cards. In many cases, you'll get better
video performance if you use the DirectX drivers. For more
information, see the discussion on DirectX later in this
document.

For best performance, use the 256 colors (8 bit) setting for
your video resolution. Displaying more colors affects
performance.

You can find more information about video cards and video
drivers in the Hardware and System Troubleshooting section
of this document.

============================================================

VISIBILITY AND SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

You can change the visibility setting in Flight Simulator

MICROSOFT DIRECTX(tm) 5.0 VIDEO DRIVERS

DirectX is a Windows system component that improves access
to hardware. Flight Simulator for Windows 95 requires
DirectX, version 5.0 or later. Setup installs DirectX on
your computer when you install Flight Simulator.

Getting Updated DirectX 5.0 Drivers from Manufacturers

Contact your video card manufacturer and follow the

manufacturer's instructions to get the latest driver. These
drivers are often available on the manufacturer's World Wide
Web site or from a bulletin board (BBS). The driver is
usually available as a PKZip (ZIP) file or a self-extracting
executable (EXE) file.

If the manufacturer of your video card includes specific

instructions for installing the driver, follow them.
Otherwise, unzip the files into a temporary subdirectory on
your hard disk or onto a floppy disk. Then follow these
instructions:

1. Open the Display Properties dialog box by right-clicking

on the Windows desktop and then clicking Properties on the
popup menu.

In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings

tab.

3. Click Change Display Type.

4. In the Advanced Display Properties dialog box, click the

Adapter tab.

5. Click Change.

6. In the Select Device dialog box, click Have Disk.

7. If you have the latest video driver from your video card
manufacturer on a disk or CD-ROM, select the appropriate
drive and click OK. Otherwise click Browse. Go to the
temporary subdirectory you created for the video card files
and open the DISPLAY.INF file.

8. In the Select Device dialog box, choose the driver that

matches your video card and then click OK.

9. Click OK as many times as necessary to accept the

changes.

10. To restart your computer, click Yes in the System

Settings Change dialog box.

MICROSOFT DIRECTX(tm) 5.0 GENERAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. What is Microsoft DirectX?

A. Microsoft DirectX is a set of drivers available with the
Microsoft Game Software Development Kit (SDK).

Q. What components make up Microsoft DirectX?

A. DirectX components include Direct 3D, DirectDraw,
DirectInput, DirectPlay, and DirectSound. DirectDraw
and DirectSound components replace current Windows 95
and DirectX 3.0 display and sound drivers with
DirectX 5.0 drivers.

Q. How do I obtain Microsoft DirectX?

A. If you develop computer games and you want to provide
DirectX functionality within your game, you need the
Microsoft Game SDK. The Game SDK is available on the
Microsoft Developer's Network (MSDN) Level 2 CD-ROM.
Independent software vendors (ISVs) who use these components
in their games can redistribute them.

Q. What is DirectDraw?
A. DirectDraw allows direct access of video display memory,
hardware blitters, hardware overlays, and page flipping.
DirectDraw provides this functionality while maintaining
compatibility with existing Windows 95-based programs and
device drivers. Essentially, DirectDraw is a memory manager
for video memory. Using DirectDraw, a program can easily
manipulate video memory, taking full advantage of the
blitting and color decompression capabilities of different
types of video hardware without becoming dependent on a
particular piece of hardware.

Q. What is DirectInput?
A. The Microsoft DirectInput application programming
interface (API) provides fast and consistent access to
analog and digital joysticks. The DirectInput API maintains
consistency with the joystick APIs of the Microsoft Win32
Software Development Kit (SDK), but has improved
responsiveness and reliability by changing the device driver
model. DirectInput device drivers also use the registry to
store settings for standard joysticks, calibration
information for previously configured joysticks, and
settings for OEM-supplied joysticks.

Q. What is DirectPlay?
A. The Microsoft DirectPlay application programming
interface (API) for Windows 95 is a software interface that
simplifies game access to communication services. DirectPlay
provides a way for games to communicate with each other that
is independent of the underlying transport, protocol, or
online service.

Q. What is DirectSound?
A. The Microsoft DirectSound application programming
interface (API) is the audio component of the Microsoft
Windows 95 Game SDK that provides low-latency mixing,
hardware acceleration, and direct access to the sound
device. DirectSound provides this functionality while
maintaining compatibility with existing Windows 95-based
programs and device drivers.

Q. What do I do if I have problems with the DirectX drivers

that replace my Windows 95 video and sound drivers?
A. If you experience problems with the DirectX video or
sound drivers, you can remove them by running DXSETUP.EXE.
You can find DXSETUP.EXE on the Flight Simulator CD-ROM.

To run DXSETUP.EXE

1. Insert your Flight Simulator CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.

2. Open Windows Explorer, and then select your CD-ROM drive.

3. Double-click the DirectX folder.

4. Double-click the file DXSETUP.EXE to run DirectX(tm)

Setup.

NOTE: After you run DXSETUP.EXE, some DirectX files remain

in the Windows\System folder. These files do not affect the
Windows 95 video or sound drivers. To remove these files,
restart your computer in MS-DOS mode and remove the
following files from the Windows\System folder:

DSOUND.*
DDRAW.*
D3D*.*
DDHELP.EXE
DPLAY.DLL
DPSERIAL.DLL
DPWSOCK.DLL

Q. Who supports Microsoft Game SDK and DirectX?

A. Microsoft Game SDK is supported by Microsoft Developer
Support. The DirectX drivers, such as video and sound
drivers, are supported by the Desktop Systems group. If your
DirectX drivers are provided by an original equipment
manufacturer (OEM), the drivers are supported by that
manufacturer.

folder and name it <FLTSIM>\SCENERY\EUROPE1.

4. Copy the file DISK1.EXE from disk #1 and DISK2.EXE from

disk #2 to the EUROPE1 folder.

5. Create two new folders under the EUROPE1 folder with the
names SCENERY and TEXTURE. These folders should be named
<FLTSIM>\SCENERY\EUROPE1\SCENERY and
<FLTSIM>\SCENERY\EUROPE1\TEXTURE.

6. From your Flight Simulator CD, copy the files in the

\SCNSETUP\EUROPE1 folder to the
<FLTSIM>\SCENERY\EUROPE1\SCENERY folder.

To Run the DISK1 and DISK2 EXE Files

You should run these EXE files from an MS-DOS command

prompt.

1. Change to the <FLTSIM> folder on your hard drive and run

DISK1A.EXE. Type disk1a at the command prompt.

SETTING UP MICROSOFT SCENERY PACKS

This section describes how to use Microsoft scenery add-on

products for Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 or 5.1 with
Microsoft Flight Simulator 98.

First, note that if you own Microsoft New York, Paris,

Japan, Caribbean, Hawaii, Scenery Pack 1, or the BAO
Las Vegas add-on scenery packs you don't need to
install those scenery add-ons. Those products are now
included in Microsoft Flight Simulator 98, and they're
installed when you run setup.

If you own the Microsoft Southern California Expansion

Pack, you should be able to be install it with no special
procedures. Please note, however, that to access these
airports, it is necessary to click the "6.0 Scenery and
Before" radio button in the Go To Airport dialog. If you
use the standard entries for these airports, you may find
yourself positioned incorrectly rather than at the end of
the desired runway.

HARDWARE AND SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING

This section describes some issues related to specific video

drivers and other hardware. For issues related specifically
to 3D cards, refer to the section below, "DIRECT 3D
TROUBLESHOOTING."

Issue: Difficulty in setting up a joystick.

Discussion: When changing to a new game controller it is always

best to exit the "Customize Controls" screen and then open it up
again. This forces Flight Simulator 98 to recognize the new
game controller and any new axis or buttons related to it. Failure
to do this might result in the inability to assign a throttle or
rudder axis.

Hooking up the Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro to pedals can cause

hardware conflicts that don't allow you to calibrate correctly.
Separate pedals should not be used with this joystick.

You may experience some incompatibilities when hooking up a CH

Flightstick Pro to a Thrustmaster F-16 TQS. This sometimes
includes loss of the POV switch hat and various joystick buttons.

Issue: The Univbe video driver doesn't allow DirectX 5.0 to

work correctly.

Discussion: Disabling the line in AUTOEXEC.BAT that calls

Univbe will fix the problem.

1. Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file with Notepad or any other

editor that can save text (ASCII) files.

2. Search for the line that contains a reference to UNIVBE.

3. Add REM to the start of the line to disable the driver.

The edited line should look like this:

REM UNIVBE

4. Restart your system.

To use the Univbe video driver again, edit AUTOEXEC.BAT

again. Removing REM from the beginning of the line that
contains UNIVBE.DRV and restart your system.

Issue: An error message appears that says, "A required .DLL

file, DDRAW.DLL, was not found."

Discussion: You need to reinstall DirectX, a system

component that makes more efficient use of your computer's
video hardware. DirectX is installed on your computer when
you install Flight Simulator.

To Reinstall DirectX

1. Insert your Flight Simulator CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive.

2. Open Windows Explorer, and then select your CD-ROM drive.

3. Double-click the DirectX folder, which is inside the

Setup folder.
4. To run DirectX setup, double-click the file DXSETUP.EXE.

5. Click Reinstall DirectX.

Issue: I can't play videos in Windows NT 4.0

Discussion: You must have administrative permissions on your

system to correctly and completely install Microsoft Flight
Simulator on a computer running Windows NT 4.0. Log on as
the Administrator, or talk to your system administrator to
change your permissions. Then, run Indeo setup from the CD-
ROM. Indeo setup is located at:

\Indeo\Setup.exe

Issue: Can I uninstall DirectPlay 5.0 on NT?

Discussion: Once the DirectPlay 5.0 components have been

installed, it should not be necessary to remove them. If
for some reason you want to restore DirectPlay 3.0, you will
need to restore the DPLAYX.DLL, DPWSOCKX.DLL and DPMODEMX.DLL
files from the original NT installation.

CHANGING CD-ROM DRIVE LETTERS

If you add a hard drive to your system or take other actions

that cause your CD-ROM drive letter to change after you
install Flight Simulator, you will see error messages about
CD-ROM performance boosters when you start Flight Simulator.
You will also see an error message if you try to run Flight
Simulator setup from the Add/Remove Programs dialog box in
the Windows Control Panel. These errors occur because Flight
Simulator uses the letter originally assigned to the CD-ROM
drive.

To correct the error messages associated with the

performance boosters, use the scenery library in Flight
Simulator.

To Change the CD-ROM Drive Letter for Performance Boosters

1. On the World menu, click Scenery Library.

2. Click the Performance button.

3. In the Performance Boosters dialog box, select the first

scenery area in the list of performance Boosters and
click Edit.

4. In Source Path, type the new CD-ROM drive letter and

click OK.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 for each scenery area in the performance

boosters list.
6. Click Restart.

7. Click OK twice to exit the scenery library.

To correct the setup error, you must run setup again from
the Flight Simulator CD-ROM. You cannot fix this error by
running setup from the Control Panel or from your hard disk.

MULTIPLAYER

When a multiplayer session is launched from the Internet Gaming

Zone, new players cannot join the game once it has started unless
they know the IP address of the machine that is the session host.
If the IP address is known, the session can be located if TCP/IP
is selected from the 'Connection Type' dialog, and the host's IP
address is entered into the 'Locate Session' alert.

While flying in a multiplayer session, it is possible for players

to be flying with different settings for their simulation rates. This
will result in planes moving at rates which are not 'normal' in the
viewer's time reference frame.

While flying in a multiplayer session, it is possible for players to have

different levels of dynamic scenery, scenery complexity, or different
scenery installed. This will result in planes that appear to fly through
objects, buildings, or under the ground.

Collision detection between multiplayer aircraft is activated by turning

on the "Crash when hitting dynamic scenery" option. This can be found
in the Aircraft Menu, Aircraft Settings dialog, Crash/Damage tab.

You may encounter problems if you attempt to start an internet

multiplayer session under the following specific circumstances:
a) You are running Flight Simulator 98 in full-screen mode, and
b) You have not started your dial-up internet connection prior to
starting Flight Simulator 98.
In this situation, Flight Simulator may minimize and cannot be restored.
This situation can be avoided by either starting your internet connection
prior to starting Flight Simulator, or by switching back to windowed mode
first by pressing Alt-Enter.

DIRECT 3D TROUBLESHOOTING
The list below includes known issues that currently exist with 3D
accelerated graphics cards and FS98. As you may not be familiar with
several of the terms listed in the "Known FS98 Issues" section below,
here is a brief description of each:

Mip Mapping: The blending of textures so they appear to flow smoothly

from one to the next.

Bilinear Filtering: Another process used for blending textures,

(texture smoothing).

Specular Highlights: Sun glints reflecting off of surfaces, (such as

metal aircraft surfaces).

Alpha Blending: An object that appears semi-transparent such as an

aircraft propeller at full throttle.

8-Bit Textures: This texture setting may provide better performance

but could also sacrifice texture resolution and color quality. Please
refer to the section below entitled, "Issues that affect all 3D video
cards" for additional details on setting texture resolutions.

KNOWN FS98 ISSUES WITH 3D VIDEO CARDS:

Cirrus Logic CL GD5464 & GD5465: With the current drivers that we have
tested, it is recommended that you do not use hardware acceleration with
these chipsets. You may want to download updated drivers from the video
card manufacturer as they become available. You may also experience some
haze problems or difficulties with textures. The CD GD5464 & GC5465
chipsets are used in the Lagoona 3D & CL Graphics Blaster 3D video cards.

Rendition Verite 1000 and 2000 Cards: These cards do not support Mip
Mapping. Verite chipset-based cards include, Sierra "Screamin' 3D", CL 3D
Blaster, Canopus Total 3D, and Intergraph Reactor.

ViRGE Cards: Virge chipset-based cards include, #9 Reality 772, Diamond

Stealth 3D, and STB Velocity 3D.
- Mip Mapping with ViRGE chipsets is not optimal when viewed at ground
level. One way to correct this is to turn Mip Mapping off in the
Hardware Acceleration dialog.
- No runway lights at night: Some versions of the Virge driver do not
support drawing points, which are required for many nighttime lighting
effects. Contact your vendor for an updated driver.

Matrox Mystique and Mystique 220: These cards do not support Alpha
Blending, Mip Mapping, or Haze. Even though the Mystique 220 has the
option to turn on haze, we suggest that you do not do this as it could
cause display corruption.
NOTE: During DirectX 5.0 installation, replacing the Matrox Mystique
drivers will sometimes not be recommended, however, it our recommendation
that you replace the drivers anyway for the best results.

3D Labs Permedia 3D: Mip Mapping is not supported.

NEC Power VR: Mip mapping is applied to buildings only. No haze

(visibility) effects are available with this card with currently available
drivers, (check the NEC PowerVR web site for driver updates).

ATI Rage Cards: The default 16-bit texture setting is required to use FS98
with any Rage chipset. Using 8-bit textures can cause undesirable effects,
such as game hangs and palette corruption. Rage chipset-based cards
include the Rage, Rage II, and Rage II+.

3Dfx Cards: Mip Mapping causes minor texture corruption at airports if 8

bit textures are used. Using 16-bit textures is recommended and should
reduce or remove these problems.

Canopus Total 3D: Using the OEM drivers with this card can cause some
palette corruption on dialogs and aircraft instrument panels. We recommend
you use the DX5 drivers for this card.

Number Nine Reality 772: The current drivers supplied with the Reality 772
will not work correctly with FS98. Until newer drivers are available from
the hardware manufacturer we recommend using the drivers supplied with DX5.

Hercules Stingray 128/3D: It is suggested that you use the current drivers
from the manufacturer's web site for this card.

ISSUES THAT AFFECT ALL 3D VIDEO CARDS:

All 3D cards capable of 32-bit color modes: Our experience has been that
most 32-bit color drivers do not work reliably with Flight Simulator.
We strongly recommend using an 8-bit or 16-bit color mode instead.

When in full screen mode and selecting help, you will be switched back to
Windows. You must manually return to full-screen when you are finished
with help.

If you have installed new hardware AFTER you installed FS98, we recommend
that you re-install DX5 in order for the new hardware to take advantage of
the DX5 drivers. However, you may want to switch between the latest OEM
drivers and the DX5 drivers to determine which give you the best
performance.

FS98 sets texture resolution support to 16-bit by default. This texture

setting alleviates issues we encounter with some of the 3D cards such as
the ATI "Rage" chipsets. However, this setting may also cause performance
degradation and texture dropouts to appear in areas with a large number of
textures, (such as Las Vegas). If your video card supports 8-bit textures
you may want to switch to that resolution to improve performance when
you're in heavily textured areas.

In order to switch from 16-bit (default setting) to 8-bit textures, you'll

need to navigate to the Hardware Acceleration dialog available through the
"Options/Preferences" menu commands. Click on the "Display" tab and select
the "Display Options" button. Once you're in the Display Options dialog
select the "Hardware Acceleration" tab. The selection button for "8-bit
image textures" can be found within the area entitled, "Advanced 3D
hardware options".

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Issue: I clicked on some of the product demos and trial versions in

the Sampler application, but nothing happens.

Discussion: DirectX must be installed prior to running the trial

versions. Once you've installed Flight Simulator 98, you shouldn't
encounter any difficulty with this, since DirectX 5.0 must be installed
to run Flight Simulator.

Issue: How can I disable the Microsoft Logo movie?

Discussion: There are a few different ways to do this. The simplest

is to delete the file MSLOGO.AVI from your Flight Simulator directory.
A less permanent solution is to make the following change to your
FLTSIM98.CFG file: In the [MAIN] section, add a line which reads
"ShowLogo=0" (without the quote marks.)

Issue: I am having difficulty with the airports and navigation aids

in the Los Angeles area.

Discussion: If you installed Flight Simulator 98 directly over your

prior installation of Flight Simulator for Windows 95 AND you did not
have the Southern California Expansion pack installed previously, you
should delete the following files from your <Flight Simulator>\SCENERY
directory:
- LA1.BGL
- LA3.BGL
- LA4.BGL

Issue: Where are all the helipads in Flight Simulator?

Discussion: Helipads can be found at the following locations-

In Philadelphia:
Hahnemann (rooftop)
Penn's Landing
Philadelphia Intl
S and C 8th and Market Helistop (rooftop)
In New York:
111 Wall Street (rooftop)
East 34th Street
One Police Plaza (rooftop)
Pan Am Metroport
Port Authority - Downtown Manhattan/Wall St.
Port Authority - West 30th. St. Midtown
World Trade Center (rooftop)
In Alameda:
Alameda NAS
In Oakland:
Alameda Country Parking Garage (rooftop)
Oakland Convention Center (rooftop)
Oakland Metro Intl
In San Francisco:
Alcatraz
Commodore
Presidio of San Francisco - Crissy Field
San Francisco Hall of Justice (rooftop)

Issue: When I start an Adventure or Lesson, nothing happens.

Discussion: If you installed with the Typical option, or you used Custom
Install but did not choose to copy Adventure Sounds to the hard drive,
then adventure and lessons sounds are loaded from the Flight Simulator CD
as needed. They are deleted again when the Adventure or Lesson
finishes. If you installed Flight Simulator this way, and you attempt
to run an Adventure or Lesson without the Flight Simulator CD in your
CD-ROM drive, no error message is generated, but none of the sounds will
play, giving the appearance that nothing is happening. Press Ctrl-U to
end the Adventure or Lesson, insert the Flight Simulator 98 CD, and then
restart the Adventure or Lesson.

Issue: I can't seem to open any of the dialogs in the application.

Discussion: Some poorly behaved installers for other applications

overwrite system files needed by Flight Simulator with older versions.
If this happens to you, you will need to copy the files MSVCRT.DLL and
MFC42.DLL from your Flight Simulator CD's "FS98" directory to your
Windows\SYSTEM directory (SYSTEM32 on NT 4.0.) You may need to close all
of your applications or restart your computer in order to be able to
copy these files in some cases.

Issue: None of the numeric keypad keys seem to be controlling

the aircraft, they are switching the views instead. Also, the Num Lock
key no longer brings up a map view.

Discussion: The Num Lock key now behaves normally. That is, it toggles
the Num Lock state on and off. In order for the numeric keypad keys to
control the aircraft, you should ensure that Num Lock is turned off.
To bring up a map view, press "Shift-]". To close the map view, the "]"
key will now close whichever view window has focus.

Issue: I see a COM2 radio in the Cessna's radio stack. Why can't I
use it?

Discussion: At this time, only a single COM radio is supported by

Flight Simulator 98.

Issue: How can I change the Shift-Z coordinate displays back to

degrees/minutes/seconds? It currently displays only minutes and
fractional minutes.

Discussion: Add the following line to your FLTSIM98.CFG file, in the

[MAIN] section:
DISPLAY_FRACTIONAL_MINUTES = 0
This will return to the display format used in prior versions of
Microsoft Flight Simulator.
