Coronavirus
Connie has coronavirus...

...and she feels

...she has a fever...
out of breath.

...she is coughing...

A coronavirus is a "bug" that can make your

nose and lungs feel bad.
Coronaviruses are very, very, very small. Smaller
than a strand of your hair! You need a special
microscope to see them.

Coronaviruses get their

name because they look
like the sun! Do you see it?
How did you get your name?
How many different dogs can you think of?
There are small dogs like Yorkies and
big dogs like St. Bernards. Just like dogs,
there are many different coronaviruses.
MERS-CoV
SARS-CoV SARS-CoV-2

Other Coronaviruses are

common and have funny
names like OC43, HKU1,
and HCoV-299E.

Some give you the sniffles or a cold. Some, like

SARS and MERS, can make you really, really sick.
But good news! Your doggy or kitty
can't catch this new virus! Color each virus a
different color to show the different coronaviruses.
Coronaviruses are found in bats...

...other animals like camels...

...and can infect people who care for these animals.

This new coronavirus also came from bats.
Scientists are still learning what other animal
it infected before the virus started infecting people.

?
What's your guess?
When the scientists find out,
draw the animal here!
Not every virus can, but this coronavirus started
spreading person-to-person through coughs and
handshakes. It caused a pandemic.

A pandemic is having lots of people sick with the

same disease all around the world at the same time.
In this case, the disease is COVID-19.

Can you find the pandemic-related words below?

FEVER SICK
HOSPITAL VIRUS
Connie may not get very sick and
may feel better quickly.

But Connie could make someone else sick. Her older

grandparents or neighbor friend with cancer
aren't able to fight the disease as well.
They may have to go to the hospital.
How can you protect yourself?

It's easy! Wash your hands for at least 20

seconds. Do you know your ABCs or
the Happy Birthday Song? Sing it while you
use soap and water to scrub each finger and thumb.
You may also practice something called
social distancing.
That means staying at home, avoiding crowds,
and not hugging other people. This stops the
coronavirus from finding a new person to infect.

Your school may close. Your parents may

work from home.

What fun things can you do? Read a new book!

Invent a board game! Play in your yard with
your dog! Help bake a pie! There are lots of fun
things to do while home.
Don't be scared! You can help stop the virus!

Make sure you wash your hands, use hand sanitizer,

and keep distance from other adults and kids.
If you have to cough, cough into
your elbow and not your hands.
Help clean your house with special wipes and sprays
to stop the virus from staying there.

With your help, we can keep other kids

and adults from getting sick!
