Developing Reading Comprehension

As Stated by Clarke, Paula and Truelove, Emma (2014) given the complexity of issues involved
in reading and the importance of helping children to master such essential skills for learning, it
is not surprising to see the range of prolific publications in this sector of literature. It sets a clear
context for its contribution as a guide for intervention to help improve reading comprehension of
children aged 7-11 with difficulty in extracting meaning from text though being regarded as
fluent and accurate oral readers.

1.1 Literal Comprehension Jumiati, Andi Asri (2014)

Reading is one of the most important skills we need in increasing our personal welfare and
social progress. It is cannot be denied that language is an integral part of human life and society.
After doing observation at the school by the English Teacher said that the students is still low in
reading comprehension. Many students think that reading is a boring activity. And based on
my experience when I studied in senior high school, most of the students thought that
answering reading test was a boring task. On the other hand, using only text disallows the
validity of their personal point of view, no connection is made, and only literal
comprehension may result.

Inferential Comprehension (Hansen, Jane; Pearson, P. David, 1982)

Inferential comprehension is more difficult for children than literal comprehension; this assertion
has been validated in a wide range of studies, using-a variety of measures. it is possible that the
gap betwetn literal and inferential comprehension performance could be narrowed if inferential
tasks received more instructional emphasis.

Critical Reading ( Kleffer, Kristin 2019)

I had plenty of time to read, write, and improve my writing skills, but making the time to
actively work toward our creative goals is a topic for another day . Just as critical reading
demands that you actively analyze a story or passage, building a critical reading practice is an
intentional choice. Knowing the power of critical reading is one thing, but making a practice
out of analyzing the stories you read can prove a bit more difficult.

Critical Reading (Hülya Küçükoğlu 2011)

Critical reading is basically a reading process which involves critical thinking. In the last
decades, in addition with the comprehension in reading, analytic reading was started to be
discussed. Critical reading requires reading and critical thinking. In order to make a good
critical reading, one should know how to do critical thinking. defines critical reading is ―a
dialogue between the reader and the text‖. That is, it is an interactive process that goes on
between the reader and the text, resulting in comprehension.
