Design & Material Specifications

Aquastore and TecStore design and material specifications incorporate recognized standards assuring high quality and long-lasting industrial service
storage tanks. Materials are carefully specified and inspected for conformance to rigid design specifications. Sheet assembly bolts are manufactured in
our own facility. And, perhaps most important, our design methods and selected materials have been proven in hundreds of thousands of installations.

DESIGN CRITERIA (ESPCI Standard)

ƒ The design of Aquastore and TecStore tanks conform to the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Standard, latest revision Note: Maximum
allowable tensile stress will be .66 of yield. Minimum allowable steel thickness is 0.080 inches (2.0 mm).
ƒ Wind design is per ANSI/ASCE 7-98 Note: Wind stiffener analysis and wind loading will be adjusted for velocities higher and lower than 100 mph (160 kph) in
2 2
proportion to the squares of the velocities. The following minimum loadings will apply: 4 psf (192 N/m ) for tanks < 20 ft (6.1 m) tall; 5 psf (239 N/m ) for tanks 20 ft (6.1 m) tall
to 40 ft (12.2 m) tall; and 10 psf (479 N/m ) for tanks > 40 ft (12.2 m) tall. Unless otherwise specified, an Importance Factor of 1.0 and Exposure Category “B” is
2

assumed.
ƒ Earthquake Seismic Zone – The earthquake seismic condition is as mapped by Factory Mutual Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets as
Revised September 2001. In accordance with Section 2.2 of the Factory Mutual Data Sheets, Zone equivalents are as follows:
FM Zone 1000 Non-seismic design
FM Zone 150 AWWA D103-87, Seismic Zone 3 pseudo dynamic
FM Zones 70 & 40 AWWA D103-87, Seismic Zone 4 pseudo dynamic
Unless otherwise specified, the AWWA Site Amplification Factor (S) is designated as 1.0.

MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

ƒ Plates and Sheets – Steel plates and sheets used in the construction of the tank shell, tank floor (when supplied) and tank roof (when supplied),
shall comply with the following minimum standards. (Note: Aquastore sheets are Grades 30 and 50 (after firing), TecStore sheets are Grades 30, 60 and 80.)
o Mild strength steel
ASTM A570 Grade 30 - maximum allowable tensile stress 19,800 psi (13,652 N/cm2)
o High strength steel
ASTM A607 Grade 50 – maximum allowable tensile stress 33,000 psi (22,753 N/cm2)
ASTM A607 Grade 60 – maximum allowable tensile stress 39,600 psi (27,303 N/cm2)
ASTM A607 Grade 80 – maximum allowable tensile stress 52,800 psi (36,405 N/cm2)
ƒ Rolled Structural Shapes - Material shall conform to minimum standards of ASTM A36 or AISI 1010.
ƒ Horizontal Wind Stiffeners - Intermediate horizontal wind stiffeners shall be of the “web truss” design with extended tail to create multiple layers of
stiffener, permitting wind loads to distribute around tank. Web truss stiffeners shall be of steel with hot dipped galvanized coating.
ƒ Bolt Fasteners - Bolts used in tank lap joints shall be ½” – 13 UNC-2A rolled threads. Bolt Material shall conform to the following:
o 1” bolt length - SAE J429 Grade 2 - Tensile strength – 74,000 psi Minimum (51,021 N/cm2), Allowable shear stress – 18,163 psi (12,523 N/cm2).
o 1-1/4” bolt length - SAE J429 Grade 5 - Tensile strength – 120,000 psi Minimum (82,737 N/cm2), Proof Load – 85,000 psi Minimum (58,605
N/cm2), Allowable shear stress – 30,000 psi (20,684 N/cm2).
o Greater than 1-1/4” bolt length - SAE J429 Grade 8 - Tensile Strength – 150,000 psi Minimum (103,421 N/cm2), Proof Load – 120,000 psi
Minimum (82,737 N/cm2), Allowable shear stress – 40,000 psi (27,579 N/cm2).
o Bolt finish – Zinc, mechanically deposited, 0.002 inches minimum (50 microns) – under bolt head, on shank and threads.
o Bolt head encapsulation - The entire bolt head up to the splines on the shank shall be encapsulated with high impact polypropylene copolymer.
Resin shall be stabilized with an ultraviolet light resistant material such that the colour shall appear black. The copolymer shall be certified to
meet the ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for indirect additives for drinking water supply applications.
