It is believed that the enetl\Y' will adopt all of the capabilities open to
him insofar e.s hie strength and resources will permit .
It is certain that he will defend the beaches to the full extent of hie
ability . This defense will be very effective due to preparation or positions and
probable previous rehearsals of defensive plane .
<Ally Nhen required to do so and after e xecuting the !llaJCimtmi delay will
he withdraw and atteupt to eetabl ish a defensive position . The location of this
position will probably depend on the degree of surprise attai11ed in our landing
and hie ability to shift reserves .
Hie interference with our landing , supply and maintenance of our beach
head by ai r activity can be expected to be as strong as his materiel will perr.1it .
Hie strongest effort will likely be made in tho early stages of the landing ,
after which time his ai r aotivity will probably decreaso due to the le.ck of ai r

harassing nature because of hie lack of heavy naval unite in this area ,

TACTICAL STUDY OF TERRAIN
a . Law, ja1;;ged mountains predominate in thie area . The A."=lGI:l!S River foroa a
small, flat, horn-shaped valley 4000 yda wide at the coaet , narro.,1inc to 500 yds
6 miles inland , all i.1teneely cultivated . In coatro.at th/3 1:101.mtaino are cut by
deep V-ehaped gull iee and sharp peaks and rid~ee ~eneral ly barren except for
scattered trees and cicrub-. P.ills riso abruptly from the plain south of the AftGEl-;S
to an elevation of ;oo ft , rising sradually to 1500 ft 5 r.1ilea to the south . The
rise ie more eradual t.o the north , the plain being broken by m1'"1arous c,onical
shaped hills 50 to 150 f't above surrounding terrain . Ar;ain broken ridges steadily
rise to dominating hills (1;00 ft to 1800 ft elevations) 8000 to 12000 yds from
the ST RAPHA::!L coast and 5000 yds north of the river , porallolin~ the coast and the
river in an arc .
b . Drainage is !:;OOd except at tho mouth of the ARGENS where swamps and orua ll
lagoone extend inland f'rora 200 to 800 yds . Owing to the predominance o steep
barren elopes , runoff' ,.,111 be high and rapid , indicating a poaaibility of flaoh
f loode of short duration during thunder storms . Secondary streams range from dry
stream beds to shallow water during the summer months . Widths vary from 15 ft to
100 ft with low vertical banks in the valleys and hi:;h, steep , r oclcy' banka in the
mountains .
The ARGEl 8 pres ente a hazard to lateral communic at ions . Lir.iited photo
coverage indicates no forda between LE i·:uY and +,he aea . 1:let , gap 2 April varic,d
f'rom 200 ft near tha mouth to 100 ft noar IE l-iUY , the banks bein~ low and vertical .
Bridging is oonaidored necessary for crossings .
c . Tho road systom ie good . Hi 6hways 98 and 7 are excellent , h_a rd-aurfaced
roads , 27 to )5 ft wide , with two-1c.y bridg~s., onpable to carry all J,.rey load. a .
The road net radiates from FREJUS, Hwy 98 f'ollo,,1ing th'e coast east and aouthwef)t
from town , Hwy 7 leading west and northeast , and t\'IO secondary roads fannine; out
to the north and northeast . In addition mulo trails criss-cross tho ontiro area .
d . Foreote and swamps , The higher ridges are predominntely void of ve eetati on .
Smal.l treoe and scrub growth cover many of the lowor f'llopos anrl in caeca may bo
denoo enouch to oeriously impede cross country movQment of foot troops , The culti
vated valloys aro dovoid of trees oxcopt for occiasional thin lines alon~ roads and
etreame . Excopt for· the small awar.tp at the TilOUth of tbQ ARGElS no marshland ia
indicated in the area .
( 1) Huy 98 is tho main route from tho boachce to ST RAPHA3L and to FREJUS •
. (2) Hwy 7 a.fforde an excellent route from FREJUS to LE ,ruy and 1-1eatw-4rd
along the ARGElts Valley.
To repel_ the eatabl iahment of a beachhead , the enenw has Hwys 98 and 7
and two good secondary roads all converging on the beachhead area from the south
weetJ west, north, northeast and east .
( 2) igh ground dominating the beaches and affording tho enemy superior
observation until our forces have penetrated inland approximately 6 miles .
Deep gullies and canyons afford cover in the mountains . Trees and
brush are sufficient for individual concealment. Digging will be difficult in the
mountains J easy in tho valley. Concealment from the air will be difficult.
Coastal hills give excellent view of' the beaches . Dist.ant observation
inland -,ill be difficult by virtue of the broken terrain foaturos .
a. High ground north and south of the ARGEl S River, both coastal at)d inland .
a, Beach 264B (GREEN) and the coastline bet\•een ST RAP" EL and Beach 261fB
( GREE}) ar o all dominated by hills that besin at the beaches or i ~ od iatcly eh ind•
In addition, the major portion of Beach 264B (GREEI~) empties into a small aroe. of
marshes and lagoonsJ obstacles to both men and vehicles . That portion not cov e red
by ma.rah leads directly into a small town .
··Beach 264A (RED) is the one beach suitable for maintenance and the unload
ing of supplies on a large scale . This beach leads directly into tho ARGENS Valloy
but can bo covered by cross fire from hills at either end of the boach,
b. Roads. All beaches e!!tpty directly onto H,-,y 98 . All vehicular traffic 'dill
be funneled throue;h ST RAPHAEL and FREJUS , necessitating early capture of those
towns.
