Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is one branch of engineering that not only understands how to build and
renovate. Not only biulding and infrastructure, but also the environment . Civilengineering has a wide
scope namely knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, boilogi, geology, and computers that
have their respective roles . Civil engineering is developed with the level of human needs and
movement, in order to be able to sience can turn a forest into a big city.

Civil Engineering professions include design/ execution, construction/maintenanceof road

infrastructure, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airport, traffic (land, sea, air),irrigation, housing, buildings
and water supply.

The development of technology requires that the Civil Engineering proffesion not only deals
with building projects, but is required to understand other fields as well as informatic s to fasilitate
the project analysis and design. For example using the application AUTO CAD or SKETCH-UP. The will
certainly reduce the factors that cause structural failure. The result is from 1960 to 70s,the first
computing project used to design the Sydney Opera House.

Branches of Civil Engineering :

- Structural : Branches that study the structural problems of material used for development.
Building may be a made of saveral types of materials such as steel, concrete, wood, glass or
other materials. Each material has it’s own characteristics. The field of structural study of the
propertis of the material is suitable for the type building . In this field is studied more deeply
related to the planning of structure buildings, roads, bridges, tunnel from foundation
construction to buildings ready for use.

- Construction Management : Branches that study problem in construction project costs, all
matters relating to law and building permits, to organizing work in the field so that the
building is expected to finish on time.

- Transportasion : Branches that study the transportation system in planning and

implementation. Including construction and regulation of roads, Airport Construction,
Terminals, Stations and railroads.

- Geotecnical : Branch that studies the structure and properties of various kinds of soil in
supporting a building that will stand on it. The scope can be field investigation that is an
investigation of the land conditions of an area and is strengthened by laboratory
investigations.
- Hydrology : The branch that studies the water,it’s distribution, it’s control and it is problems.
Includes this area of water hydrological fields (concerning weather, rainfall, river water
dischange etc). Hydraulics( water material properties, water pressure, water push force etc)
and water structures such as harbors, irigation, PDAM.
- Environmental Engineering : Branches that study environmental issues and issues. Including
this area include the provision of facilities and infrastructure of clean water, waste
management and sewage, river pollution, noise and air pollution to sanitation techniques.
- Civil Engineering informatics : The new branch that studies the application of computers for
the calculation / modelling of a system in a development or research project. Covering this
field is exemplified in the form of structural building (Structural of material or CAD)
modelling, groundwater or sewage movement modelling, environmental modelling with GIS
(Geographic information system) technology.
