Unit 4 Text Questions

1. What would environmental engineering have in common

with coastal engineering? How would they differ?
Environmental engineering and coastal engineering are two civil
engineering that its goal is protecting our environment. The main
difference between these two sub-disciplines is that the first one
(environmental) is focused in getting a better global environment and
protecting it whereas the second one (coastal) works on constructing at or
near the coast, as well as in the development of the coast itself.

2. What is it the engineering design process?

The engineering design process is a set of series of steps that engineers use
in creating functional products and processes. This process is highly iterative
and some parts of the process often need to be repeated many times before
going on with another activity. (Though the parts that get iterated and the
number of such cycles in any given project may vary.)

3. Why is surveying so important to civil engineers?

Because before building anything, it is very important to know perfectly
where are you working. The curves, points and overall shape of the
land must be known and analyzed by the engineer before starting to build.
With surveying, engineers reach a documented map where it is
explained all what they need to know about a land so they are able to
start building.

4. List three benefits of creating a model.

Modeling helps you reuse parts of existing information and knowledge in your
new projects, saving time and money.
Discovering errors earlier and reducing system defects.
Modeling helps Improving system understanding through visual analysis

5. Why is the career outlook so bright for those in

engineering?
The career outlook is very bright because engineers are people with
a very important and essential task in our world that is to build and
develop tools that make us an easier more comfortable life. In
addition, they must have a very demanding and meticulous
preparation.
1-Find an example of a civil engineering project in your town
or area. Describe it and explain how it serves the
community.
In my grandmother's village a few weeks ago they installed a new stable for
the cattle. It is an enclosure with different departments so that the shepherds
can separate the animals and have a better organization.

2. Why do environmental engineers need to work with many

other types of engineers?
Environmental engineers have to work with other types of engineers as their
work is not focused on anything specific, but on improving our environment
and its functionality, depending on the task they have to do need the help of
one type of engineer or another. For example, if they need to build a port
module they will have to ask a naval engineer for help.

3. Do all fields of civil engineering need to use surveying? Explain

your answer.
Bearing in mind that civil engineers are in charge of developing
infrastructures and different surroundings to make our world a more
connected place, I believe that in all its fields surveying should be taken into
account, since everything that they build depends on the land on which it is
but, which engineers have to take into account. (Although it is true that there
are fields in which surveying is of rather minor importance, for example when
developing mechanisms to regulate pollution.)

4. Think about a time when you have worked with others on a

group project or in a formal group, like a sports team or singing
group. What aspects of working together worked well? How could
you bring this aspect to the workplace?
In my case I have carried out cooperative work because I play soccer in my
school team and from my point of view something that always works well is to
share the different points of view of each member of the team to try to
improve as a team. To bring this aspect to work, it could be applied by
convening a meeting from time to time between colleagues working on the
same project to share and try to improve what is necessary.

5. If you had to pick a priority for future engineers, what would it

be and why?
If I could choose a priority for the engineers of the future, in my opinion I
would set as my main objective the development of infrastructures, fuels. . .
that are eco-sustainable and that help environmental sustainability and
combat climate change.
