MAN OVERBOARD
If you see someone go overboard yell “man over board!” immediately;
continue to yell until a crew member or other passengers arrive
Do not take your eye off the person in the water and it is best to continually point
at the victim to help you with keeping him or her in sight.
If it is dark, try and keep a flashlight on the person.
Tell the first person who arrives at the scene to throw a life ring over the side of the boat even if it will not reach victim as the ring
will serve as a useful reference.
On Azores, if it is at night use one of the two life rings located either side of the wheelhouse as these also have lights.
On the dive deck a dive guide will be made ready with mask, fins, snorkel, wet suit and life jacket
The life jacket will be connected to a line secured by another crew member
Crew will assemble first aid kits, O2 and warm towels and water
The boat manager coordinates communication between the dive deck and the captain and arrange for the ‘man overboard’ to be
picked up by the swimmer
The boat manager should perform a head count to ensure that everyone is on board.

AZORES FLOODING
Floods can occur through:
• a collision
• structural failure
• a broken service (cooling) pipe
• a damaged hull fitting or gland
Flooding can affect the stability of your vessel. You need to watch out for accumulation of water and understand the free
surface effect of loose water.
Raise Alarm!
Assess speed of water entering the ship.
Determine if you can reduce or prevent water entering the ship, Easily.
By
shutting a through valve (not being used by equipment all valves should be closed when not in use!)
Turning off equipment and shutting through valve (when open and in use)
If you are the wheelhouse watchkeeper, send a radio message to nearby vessels or ashore.
Only after you have done this, go to assist. Things may deteriorate quickly once you are assisting and you may not get
another chance to get a message off.
Turn vessel towards shallower water or port. Consider beaching the vessel.
Attempt to stem the flow of water by shutting valves, or blocking the hole.
Reduce the free surface effect by making sure all water or fuel tanks not in use are pressed up full
or completely empty whenever possible.
Make sure all freeing ports are clear of obstruction to allow any collected water on deck to be drained quickly.
Look for holes that allow water or fuel to leak into adjoining compartments.
Consider the stability affects of a flooded compartment. The vessel may heel over to one side because of this. You may
need to transfer fuel or counter flood another compartment to get the damaged part of the hull out of water.
Prepare to abandon ship. Remain on the vessel for as long as it is safe to do so.

CARDIO PULMONARY RESUSITATION (CPR)
MOUTH TO MOUTH
FOR PATIENTS WHO ARE UNCONCIOUS AND NOT BREATHING:
• CALL FOR HELP
• ASK FOR SOMEONE TO GET an AED (Automated external defibrillator)
• ASK FOR SOMEONE TO GET OXYGEN
CPR should be administered by a person who has some training, however if there is no experienced person available, the
following steps could be followed.
HOW TO GIVE CPR:
• Open Airway
• Tilt the head
• Look, Listen & Feel for Normal Breathing for up to 10 Seconds
• Give 2 Rescue Breaths
• Maintain head tilt
• Breathe in for 1 seconds
• Watch chest rise & fall
• Perform 30 Chest Compressions
• Use 2 hands in centre of chest
• 4 to 5 cms Deep
• 100 Per minute
• Continue until...
• Qualified help takes over
• The casualty starts
• Breathing normally
• You become exhausted

BLEEDING
SEVERE:
• Call for Medical assistance
• Apply direct pressure to the bleeding area, using sterile cloth or gauze.
• Elevate the injured area above the heart.
• Keep the pressure on for five minutes.
• Check to see if the bleeding has stopped. If it hasn’t, apply pressure for 15 minutes.
• Check again to see if bleeding has stopped or significantly slowed. If it still hasn’t, then locate the appropriate pressure
point to try and stop bleeding
• An arterial tourniquet can be used as a last resort when it is the only way to save the casualty’s life.
• If used, a tourniquet should be made from wide, flat material; a pad should first be applied over the artery.
• The tourniquet is tightened until the bleeding stops and no further.
MINOR:
• Clean the wound using water to remove dirt and debris. You do not need to use hydrogen peroxide, iodine, or rubbing
alcohol, on minor cuts and scrapes.
• To stop the bleeding, gently apply firm, direct pressure using a clean cloth or gauze.
• Elevate injured area above heart if bleeding continues
• Iodine Solution can be applied to sterilize the wound.
• If wound is deep, seek medical assistance for wound to be stitched.
• For minor wounds, dress with clean gauze or bandaid.
• Keep wound dry and out of water.
WHEN TRANSPORTING A BLEEDING PATIENT TO HOSPITAL ENSURE INJURED AREA IS ELEVATED ABOVE THE HEART.

BURNS
SEVERE:
• Check person is conscious & breathing – may need CPR
DO:
• Call for Medical assistance.
• Wash and cool the area under cold running water until the skin returns to normal temperature (up to 20 minutes
for a thermal burn, at least 20 minutes for a chemical burn or 30 minutes for a bitumen burn). If this is not possible
apply a cold-water compress
• Lie the person down, preferably on a rug or sheet to prevent the burned area from touching the ground.
• Remove rings, watch or constricting clothing before the area starts to swell. Remove clothing soaked in boiling
liquid or contaminated with chemicals, without contaminating yourself.
• Cover the burn with clean, non-stick material, such as a freshly washed pillowcase. Fix it in place with a scarf or a
piece of clean cloth
DO NOT:
• Immerse an extensive burn in cold water; this may cause the person to go into shock.
• Use iced water as this can worsen the injury.
• Over-cool the person, especially if they are young or if the burn covers a large area.
• Remove clothing or anything that is sticking to the burn. It helps to protect against infection and prevent fluid loss.
• Use adhesive dressings, apply fat, ointment or lotion, break a blister or touch a burn.
MINOR:
DO:
• Cool the area under cold running water until the skin returns to normal temperature (up to 20 minutes for a ther-
mal burn, at least 20 minutes for a chemical burn or 30 minutes for a bitumen burn). If this is not possible apply a
cold-water compress.
• Remove jewelry and clothing from around the injury.
• Cover the burn with clean, sterile (if possible), non-stick material.
• Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. These include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve) or
acetaminophen (Tylenol, others).
DO NOT:
• Use iced water as this can worsen the injury.
• Use adhesive dressings, apply fat, ointment or lotion or touch a burn.

Sign and Symptoms:
• Skin burning and blistering , dehydration and infection
• Swelling in the skin
First Aid:
1. Keep the burning areas cool. Take a bath in cool (not cold) water. Soak the burned areas with wet cloth and do not
scrub or use any kind of soap or bath oils. This will decrease the pain instantly.
2. After cooling down your skin, you can apply Aloe Vera to the burned areas but avoid applying heavy creams,
petroleum jelly, butter and other greasy products.
3. Stay out of the sun.
4. If the pain is severe, take OTC or anti inflammatory medications to ease pain.
5. If very severe seek medical advice.

IMPACT INJURY – (BRUISING)
Symptoms of a Bruise:
• Fresh bruise may be reddish in colour.
• It will then turn blue or dark purple within a few hours, then yellow or green after a few days as it heals.
• A bruise is commonly tender, and sometimes even painful for the first few days, but the pain usually goes away as the
color fades.
• Because the skin is not broken in a bruise, there is no risk of infection.
DO:
• Apply a cold compress such as an ice pack to the affected area for 20-30 minutes in order to speed healing
and reduce swelling
• Wrap the ice pack in a towel.
• If the bruise takes up a large area of the leg or foot, the leg should be kept elevated as much as possible during
the first 24 hours after the injury.
• Take Acetaminophen (Tylenol or Paracetamol) may be taken for pain.
• After about 48 hours, heat in the form of a warm washcloth applied to the bruise for 10 minutes or so two to
three times a day may increase blood flow to the bruised area allowing the skin to reabsorb the blood more
quickly. Ultimately, the bruise will fade in color.
DO NOT:
• Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
• Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen because they slow the blood from clotting and may, in fact, prolong the bleeding.

SEVERE:
• Serious electrocution may cause unconsciousness
• Conduct your primary assessment and administer CPR if necessary.
• If victim is conscious do not put the victim in in the recovery position.
MINOR:
• Any electric shock received by a person is likely to make the person feel unwell
• They may complain of numbness or pins & needles in the area where through the electricity has passed.
• Monitor the victim and breathing and transport to medical facility.
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
Be Aware of Danger:
• The power source may still be live and touching the victim.
• Find a non-conductive object (wooden broom handles are commonly used) and break the contact between the victim
and the source

CHECKING BLOOD PRESSURE
A person with High or low blood pressure is a good indication if there is something wrong.
When a person is not feeling well you can check their blood pressure to get some idea what may be the problem.
This can be vital information for qualified emergency services when they arrive.
An Automatic Blood Pressure Tester is available from the Front Desk or the Boat Captain:
It looks like this:

DCI (DECOMPRESSION ILLNESS)
Signs and Symptoms:
• chest, torso or back pain
• dizziness
• extreme fatigue
• headaches
• malaise
• nausea
• numbness/tingling sensations
• pain/discomfort at or near a joint
• weakness
First Aid:
• Monitor consciousness, airway, breathing and pulse and resuscitate if necessary.
• Lay the diver down horizontally and maintain the airway. A diver who is nauseated, vomiting or not fully conscious
should be placed in a stable position on the side.
• Administer 100% oxygen as soon as possible
• Seek medical aid immediately. Arrange for consultation between the attending medical personnel and diving med-
ical specialist
• Assist with any transfer to a recompression chamber
• A concious stable and stable diver may drink non-alcoholic fluids (eg. Water, isotonic/electrolytes)
• Record details of dive profiles, first aid given and diver ’s response to first aid
MINOR:
• If there is any suspicion that a person may be suffering from DCI administer 100% Oxygen.
• If the person begins to feel better, it is likely they have a DCI.
• Transport the person to hospital for examination
SEVERE:
• If the person is suffering from numbness, chest pains, extreme fatigue, cannot communicate or walk…
• Transport to hospital or Recompression Chamber Facility Immediately.
• Use the fastest transportation possible.
When a diver is suspected of Decompression Illness (DCS or over expansion injury) – see DCI page adjacent to this for a list of
common symptoms – you should conduct a five minute neurological assessment following the guidelines below. You should
note the time the exam was done and any abnormalities sited. This is not a “diagnosis” but if the diver is unable to perform
any of the tasks or indicates any issues then you should follow protocol for caring for and evacuating the patient to the closest
recompression facility.
Orientation Is the patient alert? Use questions such as – What is your name? What date is it? Where are you? to evaluate
Eyes Ask the patient to follow your finger, both eyes should track together. Look and see if the pupils are the same size. Ask if they
have any problem seeing clearly
Forehead Check sensation - do a touch test. Ask the patient to raise their eyebrows and see if both raise together
Face Ask the patient to whistle and/or smile and look for the same strength on both sides of the face. Note any drooping of lips
Ears Ask if they have any problems hearing. Check hearing by rubbing your thumb and forefinger together (while the diver’s eyes
are closed) and see how close the fingers have to be to be audible.
Swallow (Gag Reflex) Have the diver take a sip of water and watch their “Adam’s apple” as they swallow to be sure it moves up and down
Tongue Have the diver stick out their tongue. Note if it droops, moves to one side or other abnormal movements.
Shoulders Place your hands firmly on the diver’s shoulders, have them “shrug”. Note if there is any difference in strength
Arms and Hands Have the diver squeeze your fingers with both hands at the same time, notice any difference in strength. Have the diver hold
his hands together at chest level and elbows high. Gently push and pull the elbows while the diver resists the movement.
Note any difference in strength
Chest Touch test. Look at breathing. Ask if any problems or difficulties breathing

FISH SPINE INJURIES FROM
LIONFISH, SCORPION FISH, DEVIL FISH, STONE FISH
Signs and Symptoms:
• puncture wound/laceration
• immediate pain (acute if venimous)
• some bleeding
• nausea, vomiting
• numbness in affected area
• tingling in affected area
• shock
• death (rare)
First Aid:
• Check the consciousness, airway, breathing and pulse and act accordingly
• Control severe bleeding , if present
• Remove spine, if present, only if loose and easily removed.
• Immerse the wound in hot, but not scalding (around 45°C), water. Test the water temperature yourself before im-
mersing the casualty ’s wound. Leave immerse for 30 to 90 minutes for pain relief. This may be repeated if pain
recurs. (outboard engine cooling water can be used if necessary)
• Should hot water not provide relief, apply ice/cold packs to the wound
• Analgesics as directed
• Clean the wound by scrubbing it with medical grade soap and fresh water the rinse it thoroughly with fresh water.
• Seek medical advice
• Apply local anesthetic
Doctor:
• Injection of local anaesthetic (without adrelain) gives relief and allows better cleaning
• Antivenom is available for stonefish
• Tetanus toxoid if indicated
• Secodary infection is common
• Look carefully for any part of spine still in the wound. X-ray of injury site for retained spine fragments may be advisable

SEA SNAKE BITE
Signs and Symptoms:
• puncture marks
• stiffness in limbs
• aching
• dark brown urine
• muscular contraction, weakness
• numbness
• difficulty breathing
• blueness of lips and tongue
• muscular paralysis
• breathing stops
• hearts stops
First Aid:
• Check the consciousness, airway, breathing and circulation and resuscitate if necessary
• Pressure - immobilization ( see note)
• Use an elastic bandage (similar to ACE bandage) to wrap the limb starting at the distal end (fingers or toes) and
wrap toward the body. It should be tight but the fingers and toes should remain pink so that the circulation is not
cut off (this is not supposed to be a tourniquet)
• Monitor the diver and keep the diver still, quiet and reassured
• Medical aid/ hospital. Sea snake anti-venom is available
Note:
The pressure bandage must not occlude the circulation (finger/toes beyond the bandage should remain pink and with normal
sensation). The bandage should be left in place until proper medical support is available. The pressure bandage is not a tourni-
quet and must not cut off blood circulation.

• Unconciousness
• Clenched Teeth
• Shock
• Irregular or no breathing
• Weak or absent pulse
First Aid:
Check Divers Airway, Breathing and Circulation
• Do not delay taking the diver to a stable platform where vital signs can be properly assessed.
• Remove the victim from the water
• Place the victim in a stable position on the side, clear the mouth and check the airway, breathing and pulse. Resus-
citate if necessary
• Send for an ambulance or doctor
• Administer 100% oxygen
• The victim must go to the hospital for observation even if it appears the victim has recovered

HYPOTHERMIA
MILD:
• Numbness
• Blotchy skin
• Pallor, blueness of extremities
• Shivering
First Aid (Mild): (Must be rapid in order to prevent further heat loss)
• If adequate dry coverings are available, remove divers wetsuit and replace it with dry coverings. If this is impractical
(such as when in a small boat) , leave the diver in the wetsuit and dry the surface of the suit as much as possible.
Ensure the head and neck are protected.
• Insulate the diver from cold, rain and wind. Placing the diver in the waterproof clothing or large plastic exposure
bag/sheet will keep the wind off and minimize chilling through evaporation. Cover with blankets if available.
• Warm drinks if available ( see note 1 below).
MODERATE TO SEVERE:
• Uncontrollable shivering
• Uncoordinated movements
• Weakness
• Confusion, irritability, slurred speech, memory impairment
• Muscle rigidity
• no shivering in spite of being very cold
• Dilated, fixed pupils, (not necessarily a sign of irreversible brain damage)
• Difficulty in detecting respiration and pulse
• Heart irregularities
• Death
MODERATE TO SEVERE:
• Monitor the consciousness, airway, breathing and pulse.
• Resuscitate if necessary (see note 2 below).
• Arrange medical assistance immediately
• Handle the diver very gently
• If adequate dry coverings is available, very carefully remove the diver ’s wetsuit (or cut it off ) and replace it with dry
coverings. If this is impractical, leave the wetsuits on and dry its surface as much as possible
• Insulate from the diver from the elements (as described previously). A huddle of bodies provides a good substitute if
adequate other insulation is not available
• Give warm fluids depending on the diver ’s condition ( see Note 1 Below)
• Keep diver lying down (as the diver re-warms and the blood vessels dilate, the diver may become shocked)
• The diver must go to the hospital for observation, even if apparently fully recovered
Note:
1. No alcohol, coffee or other caffeine sources.
2. Warm fluids can be given only after uncontrollable shivering stops, the diver has a clear level of consciousness, appears
stable and has the ability to swallow
Note:
1. Some victim have made successful recoveries after resuscitation following a prolonged periods of immersion, without
breathing , especially in cold waters.
2. If resuscitation is commenced it should not be stopped until the body core temperature has retured to more than 36°C
and then only on the direction of a doctor.
Cause:
1. Exposure to hight temperature.
2. Wearing a wetsuit for extended periods of time before or after diving in a hot weather.
