Biology (HL-SL) Grade 11

AY 2019-20

The Biology program of IB Diploma emphasizes on four basic concepts viz. Structure and
function of biological system with intricate designs that allow highly specialized function
with high efficiency; Universality versus diversity in biological system wherein each
system/organism has its own unique design yet there are universal features across the
living world unifying them all; Equilibrium within systems that is dynamic to ensure
continuity of life and Ecology that helps to understand structural and functional aspects of
the environment unifying other three themes.

In grade 11 HL & SL Biology, students will focus on laboratory practical skills

including: Personal engagement, planning investigations, data collection and processing.
Students will work on their individual investigations. Assessments in school take place on
a continuous basis through topic tests, projects, selected homework and presentations.

The topics covered in the course are:

 Cell Biology (Core-HL+SL)

 Molecular Biology (Core-HL+SL)
 Nucleic Acids (AHL-HL)
 Metabolism, Cell Respiration, Photosynthesis (AHL-HL)
 Ecology (Core-HL+SL)
 Human Physiology (Core-HL+SL)
 Options – Both HL and SL students are required to study any one option from
A – D that will be decided by a mutual consensus. That selected option only will be
covered in grade 11 class.
