ABSTRACT

The study documented the species of medicinal plants used by the residence of

Purok 4 North Poblacion, Medina Misamis Oriental. The plant parts used for medicinal

purposes, preparation and mode of administration of these medicinal plants were

determined. In particular, the specimens collected were about of 19 plant species.

Taxonomy and efficacy of medicinal plants is what its focuses.

Medicinal plants in the country account for around 1,500 out of 13,500 plant

species of which more than 3,500 are considered indigenous. Only 120 medicinal plants

have been scientifically validated for safety and efficacy and 14 plants are included in

this study. In the Philippines where herbal plant species abound, it is customary for

Filipinos to use them in nursing minor sickness such as cough, colds, flu and other skin

infections or irritations. Republic Act 8423 also known as Alternative Medicine Act gave

birth to the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health care. Fourteen,

among medicinal plants documented are included in the list of approved plants by

Department of Health.
