CKLA Journal – Action Research

Date Entry/Notes

9/17/19  Attended Grade Level Meeting (GLM) with 3rd Grade

o Reading Specialist (RS), Achievement Coach (AC) and
I observed how the Grade Level Team (GLT)
interacted planning for our new resource, CKLA.
o All 3 observed most of the conversation focused on
“what to grade” “how to score/grade” and not much
conversation dedicated to decomposing actual lessons
 Attended GLM with 4th Grade
o Reading Specialist (RS), Achievement Coach (AC) and
I observed how the Grade Level Team (GLT)
interacted planning for our new resource, CKLA.
o One teacher shared out big ideas from one lesson out
of CKLA.
o Teacher identified what questions teachers should
ask, along with addressing possible student
misconceptions
9/24/19  Met with 3rd Grade Lead Teacher for Individual Professional
Development Plan (IPDP) on 9/23
o Teacher spoke to feeling “overwhelmed” when
planning. Specifically pointed out the length of read
alouds, along with the time frame for student
activities
 Attended GLM on 9/24 with 3rd Grade
o Similar situation to that of 9/17
9/25/19  Met with 3rd Grade Teacher for IPDP
o Did not state anything specific, however, she shared
with her AC she needs assistance with the Read Aloud
portion of the lessons, cited the length, and keeping
student interest
 Met with 5th Grade ELA Teacher for IPDP
o Teacher shared due to the 55-minute class periods,
and CKLA has 90-minute lessons, she sometimes
needs 2 and even 3 class periods to finish one lesson.
Also, had concerns about the grading requirements (1
assignment per week in Reading/Writing), and how it
would work considering CKLA set up has only a few
opportunities to assess students per week
9/26/19  Met with 4th Grade Teacher for IPDP
o Teacher stated she felt comfortable with Eureka math,
but not CKLA. Expressed frustration with students
“not getting” or “not completing” assignments within
the given time frame of the lessons.
10/1/19  Attended GLM with 3rd Grade
o I started off the meeting by opening about their
sequence of lessons
o Teachers had questions about how to grade opinion
paragraph
o We reviewed student workbook, found opportunities
for students to revise, including checklist, and student
rubric for self assessment
o I shared CKLA Writing Rubrics with GLT on 9/23
o RS shared anchor charts with GLTs for sentence
starts/transition words.
o GLT goal was to complete first unit this week
 Attended GLM with 4th Grade
o Was in meeting for a short team
o We discussed finishing the first unit
o Lead teacher had idea for students to write out their 5
paragraph narrative on one sheet of paper, so
students had a complete rough draft in front of them,
instead of students having 4 different sheets of paper
9/30/19  Met with 4th Grade Lead Teacher for IPDP
o Teacher spoke to feeling “stressed” by the amount of
activities and the timing of the sequence within the
lesson. Said despite not having to do lesson plans this
year, planning is still difficult
10/2/19  Met with 4th Grade Teacher for IPDP
o Teacher spoke to CKLA and the difficulty preparing
for it. Specifically, the teacher mentioned sticking to
the time frame, and frustration with students who

reading
