CONTACT RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT(CRM) OF

ISOLATOR:
PURPOSE:
1.This test is especially important for contacts that carry large amounts of
current (e.g. switchgear busbars,Isolators) because higher
contact resistance can lead to lower current carrying capacity and higher losses.

2.This test measures the resistance at the micro- or milli-ohm level and is used
primarily to verify that the electrical
connections are made properly.
3.It detects the following problems like: Loose connections. Adequate tension on
bolted joints. Eroded contact surfaces.

THEORY:
Contact resistance testing also known as Ductor testing, measures the resistance of
electrical connections – terminations, joints,
connectors, busbar sections,Isolators or cable connections and so on. These can be
connections between any two conductors, for example,
cable connections and Busbar sections. The term contact resistance refers to the
contribution to the total resistance of a system
which can be attributed to the contacting interfaces of electrical leads and
connections as opposed to the intrinsic resistance,
which is an inherent property, independent of the measurement method.Ductor testing
is usually performed using a micro/milli-ohmmeter or low ohmmeter.
Increase in contact resistance can cause a high-voltage drop in the system, and
that needs to be controlled.

PROCEDURE:
1.Contact resistance measurement is carried out on the contacts of isolator when
isolator is in closed position.
2.100 Amps. D.C. is provided to both ends of the isolator in close condition
through the CRM kit.
3.Voltage across the ends is measure by milli Voltmeter.
4.Then by ohms law the resistance of close contact is calculated. It is to be come
in micro Ohms & the value should not increase 150 micro Ohms.
