I. Objectives: By the end of this activity, the student should be able to:
a) Investigate the relationship between temperature and pressure at constant volume
b) Skillfully perform several experiments showing the relationship between temperature and
pressure at constant volume
c) Willingly practice using different laboratory equipment.
II. Materials: Refer to Learner’s Module (LM), pp. 375
III. Procedures:
1. Insert Thermometer into the stopper.

2. Put 5 drops of denatured alcohol in the Erlenmeyer flask.

3. Cover the Erlenmeyer flask with the stopper and thermometer you prepared
4. Shake the Erlenmeyer flask for 2 minutes and then take the temperature reading

5. Perform three trials and record the data

IV. Data Table/ Observation:

Table 7: Data on temperature of the Gas Before and After Shaking the Erlenmeyer flask

Trial Temperature (K)

Before After
Warm 302.15 305.15
Tap 303.15 306.15
Ice 302.15 306.15
Average 302.48 305.82

V. Guide Questions
Q1. What happens to drops of denatured alcohol after 2 minutes? After another 2 minutes?
The first 2 minutes stayed the same and after shaking for 2 minutes, the temperature increased. v\
Q2. Compare the pressure exerted by the denatured alcohol molecules before and after
shaking?
The pressure exerted by the denatured alcohol molecules is smaller prior to shaking compared
with that after shaking.
Q3. How is the temperature of gas molecules affected by pressure or vice versa?
As pressure increases, the temperature also increases since they are directly proportional.
VI. Conclusion
We therefore conclude that as shown in the activity, pressure and temperature are directly
proportional based on Gay-Lussac’s Law since it was shown when the flask was shaken, the
pressure increases so the temperature of alcohol also increased.

VII. Application
One application is when firing a bullet. When gunpowder burns, the gas is superheated that a
high pressure behind the bullet is produced propelling it forcefully out of the gun.
