PROBLEM SET (Group 6)

I. VECTORS
Ellah and Halle play along with their friends the classic Philippine game agawan base.
Ellah happened to be Halle’s adversary in this game. Halle initially ran 8.0 m east with
respect to her base and then 17.0 m in a direction of 61.0° west of south. She kept on
teasing Ellah until Ellah almost caught her along the way. In order for Halle to be safe
from Ellah, she must be at least 5.0 m south from her base. In what direction and how far
must she then run to end up in her safe zone?

II. D-T and V-T GRAPHS. Convert the V-T Graph to its D-T Graph. The y-axis is the
velocity in terms of km/hr and the x-axis is the time in terms of hr.

III. ONE-DIMENSIONAL KINEMATICS

A joyful kid named Nivek was playing his Bugs Bunny modeled stuffed toy on their
windowsill. He assumed that the toy can sit stably without much handling but
unfortunately, the stuffed toy was so soft to do that so it falls off and falls past the
window below. The air resistance is negligible. It took the toy 0.540 s to pass from the
top to the bottom of this window, which is 2.10 m high. How far is the top of the window
below the windowsill from which the stuffed toy fell?
IV. TWO AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL KINEMATICS
When a train’s velocity is 12.0 m/s eastward, raindrops that are falling vertically with
respect to the earth make traces that are inclined 30.0° to the vertical on the windows of
the train. (a) What is the horizontal component of a drop’s velocity with respect to the
earth? With respect to the train? (b) What is the magnitude of the velocity of the raindrop
with respect to the earth? With respect to the train?

V. NEWTONIAN MECHANICS
A rocket of initial mass 125 kg (including all the contents) has an engine that produces a
constant vertical force (the thrust) of 1720 N. Inside this rocket, a 15.5-N electrical power
supply rests on the floor. (a) Find the initial acceleration of the rocket. (b) When the
rocket initially accelerates, how hard does the floor push on the power supply? (Start with
a free-body diagram for the power supply.)

VI. WORK, ENERGY, AND ENERGY CONSERVATION

A 5.00 kg package slides 1.50 m down a long ramp that is inclined at 24.0° below the
horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the package and the ramp is 𝜇𝑘 =
0.310. Calculate (a) the work done on the package by friction; (b) the work done on the
package by gravity; (c) the work done on the package by the normal force; (d) the total
work done on the package. (e) If the package has a speed of 2.20 m/s at the top of the
ramp, what is its speed after sliding 1.50 m down the ramp?
