REASON TO BE CHEERFUL
AS CHILDREN ENJOY ART
COMPETITION.
By Christy Parker.

Younger artists in the Youghal area gave notice of their prowess

and potential when they recently participated in an art competition
organised by Youghal Visual Arts Festival. The annual event is co-
ordinated through
primary schools
and this year
attracted 552 Treasa and Joseph Keniry
Alice Flavin with Norma, Tony and
entrants from the Mary

of Gaelscoil

secretary? Karen Gallogley -perhaps influenced by Ian Drury and
the Blockheads's 1979 hit song of the same name- the pupils were
told to interpret the theme 'Reasons to be Cheerful.' Entries were
accepted in the art material of their choice -whether crayon,
acrylic or daddy's ear wax- as long as it was presented on A4
paper.
Not surprisingly, they took to it like politicians to a junket. Six
weeks later the finished works were presented to Killeagh artist
Sinead Ni Chonaille for judgement. Its always interesting to
observe the messages emanating from the mysterious Planet

being delivered to someone in hospital. "It was beautiful to see
them expressing happiness," says Sinead, adding, adding that "the
standard was amazingly high too."
Amanda Hogan, Chairwoman of YVAF, noted that, "modes of
transport was also a common feature", with many male, rural chil-
dren drawing tractors, while their urban equivalent drew racing
cars. Looks like the next generation of boy racers is revving up
then!
It's not just the cars that were fast. Adam Born, aged 8 and a pupil
at Bun Scoil Mhuire, drew a picture of the beach. The 1st place
award winner proudly revealed that it had taken him all of "a few
minutes" to produce his masterpiece. His trophy was bound for his Robyn Gallogley with Kevin and Karen Daniel Sliney with John and Breeda

Enjoy an action packed

Summer at Aura Youghal
Leisure Centre!
An action packed summer of activities is kicking off at the Aura
Youghal Leisure Centre on Monday 30th June. Sports Camps,
Intensive Swimming Lessons, and Rookie Lifeguard Training will
provide local children with the chance to get active, meet new
friends and above all, have some great fun!
Aura’s Sports Camps, aimed at seven to nine year olds, will enter-
tain kids with rugby, basketball, swimming and other multi-sport
High Spirits Class 1 activities throughout the summer.
Intensive Swimming lessons will also take place at the Youghal
centre over the summer months. Kids of all levels and abilities
will be taught by Aura’s professionally trained swimming instruc-
tors, who believe that learning to swim can be both educational
and a whole lot of fun!
Why not let your children try something different this summer?
The Aura Centre is holding Bronze level Rookie Training courses
where kids will learn the importance of water safety, practice life-
saving skills and take part in on-deck rescues.
“Our summer camps are packed full of activities that kids will
really enjoy,” said Rose Normile, Operations Manager of the Aura
Centre. “It is really important to make sure kids stay fit and
healthy during the summer months and we should encourage our
children to be as physically active as possible.”
Noreen McCarthy with her twin Grand- Noreen and Margaret Griffin
daughters Alicia and Jennifer
All of Aura’s summer camps are run by highly motivated staff
who are fully trained under the new code of ethics for children’s
sports. Staff will be on hand throughout each camp to ensure that

“The seals are ruining inshore fishing” says Barry “they are feed-
ing on monkfish, pollack and any kind of whitefish because of the
ban on salmon fishing. The seals used to feed on the salmon in the
nets but it wasn’t so bad the, as there were other fish in the sea, so
to speak.”
With a lot of the fish being eaten by seals these days, most fisher-
men are left with no choice but to fish for lobsters, which has lead
to the drop in prices where at one time they were getting €17 a kilo
now they are only getting €10!”
Barry adds “I reckon they should be a cull on the seals, like they
do in other countries, in my mind that is the only solution. If I
were a farmer and a dog attacked my herd I would have a right to
shoot the dog but we are not allowed to touch the seals as they are
protected. How is a man to feed his family?”.
Out of the 51 monkfish that Barry caught that day, only 7 were
whole while the remaining had only their heads left because of the
seals that ravaged their bodies. Thundercat Racing on Sunday last

ing the chain of office he praised the outgoing Mayor, David
Savage for his 'great work' and that of the Vice-Mayor, Cllr.
Sammy Revins. Looking comfortable in his elevated chair, Cllr.
Casey identified the Council as a single entity with a singular pur-
pose. "The Council is a unit working together, all for the good of
the town," he said. Perhaps with retirement in mind the Cllr.
reflected on the state of the town and expressed no little optimism
for it’s future. "We have an excellent staff and Council. Youghal is
taking off. When you look at all the things we have, it's a wonder-
ful town. Our heritage is outstanding and towns across Europe
would love to have a quarter of what we have. We are on the verge
of being discovered and that is due to the Council and it’s offi-
cials," he said. There was a genuine air of goodwill toward the
new Mayor whose sincerity on taking the post was plainly visible.
"I know the dedication and commitment it takes. It is a great hon-
our. I will try to do my best in what is my last term as a Councillor Sitting: Sr. Bridie, St. Bernard, St. Carmel and Sr. Stanisclaus; Standing: Glynn

The Mayor had been proposed by Cllr. Burke who heaped praise
on his long standing colleague and friend. "He has served the peo-
ple of Youghal with distinction over a great number of years in
many different capacities as water Curator for over 40 years, as
Station Officer of Youghal Fire Brigade for 21 years, as a member
of the Council since 1994, as Chairman of Youghal Urban District
Council in 1996-97 and as Mayor of Youghal Town Council in
2004-05. He is a Public Representative of the highest ability, expe-
rience, honesty and integrity and I am delighted to nominate him
for the position of Mayor of Youghal," he said. Cllr. Revins sec-
onded the proposal and thanked the Mayor 'for the last fifteen
years'. The evening had begun with the out-going Mayor, Cllr.
David Savage reflecting on his year as Chairman of the Council.
"It's been a tremendous honour for me. To be elected Mayor in my
first term was fantastic really. There's a tradition in other towns
not to elect Mayors in their first terms. I would like to thank the

others, the most challenging. "The most difficult thing was chair-
ing the meetings because you have eight other Cllrs. all equally
forthright and trying to control things over a number of hours was
tough," he added. Cllr. Savage admitted it took him '3-4 months to
get into it'. He also said he looked forward to getting back on the
floor and added that as Mayor he 'didn't want to abuse the position'
to make political gain. "I saw it as a PR job for the people of the
town," he said.
He offered praise to the Town Clerk, who, he said, guided him
with words of advice within days of taking office. He also thanked
the Council staff and the press for attending the monthly meetings
and helping keep the public informed with reports of the minutes
of the meetings.
Praise for Cllr. Savage was unanimous and generous with Cllr.

Earlier, at Friday's launch party, a fantastic firework display and a
speed demonstration by a P1 Powerboat had enlivened a huge

It had been a while since Youghal had occasion to gather in force
and meet itself, as it did through the weekend. Many pubs, enjoy-
ing 1.30 extensions, pulsated to live music as patrons moved from
venue to venue, particularly in the South Main Street. Gardai -of

been "peaceful."
When it was all over, satisfaction reigned. Director of Thundercats
and race organiser Fiona Pascoe was in awe of the hospitality,
describing the weekend as her "best ever" since joining the sport
and paid tribute to "the unbelievable welcome we have received
here."
The event was mainly sponsored by Cork County Council,
Youghal Town Council, Youghal Credit Union and Youghal Socio-
Economic Development Group. However, Youghal Chamber of
Commerce vice-Chairman Seamus Curran paid tribute to the
wider business community who "did everything necessary to sup-
port this venture 100 %." Mr Curran stressed the enthusiasm, co-
operation and commitment of Youghal's business community for
the unprecedented unity of purpose that made the event a success.
"But we must start planning for next year immediately," he
stressed. He gauged the weekend's benefit to the local economy at Neil Cushen and Dave O'Hanlon from Tramore on Team Phatcat competing in their
