2006 - A BUSY YEAR FOR

IRISH LIFEBOATS.
Irish Lifeboats were called out on 907 occasions during 2006 and
the voluntary lifeboat crews rescued 990 lives, making this, anoth-
er busy year for the RNLI. The figures show that there was an
average of 19 people rescued every week during the twelve-month
period. The most
common type of casu-
alty was powered
pleasure craft, with
237 incidents record-
ed, ¼ of the total fig-
ure, while fishing ves-
sels accounted for 173
callouts.The Youghal
Lifeboat was called
out on 13 occasions and succeeded in rescuing 12 people during
2006, while our neighbouring stations - Ballycotton launched 21
times rescuing 47 people and Helvick Head, Co Waterford
responded to 17 incidents rescuing 24 people. The busiest of the
seven Co Cork lifeboat stations was Crosshaven in Cork Harbour,
their voluntary crews answered 42 callouts and rescued 46. In total
the seven Cork Lifeboats based at Youghal, Ballycotton,
Crosshaven, Kinsale, Courtmacsherry Harbour, Baltimore and
Castletownbere answered 143 callouts and rescued 175 people.
There are 55 RNLI lifeboats based at 43 stations around the Irish
Coast, which also includes two inland waterway stations based at
Dromineer, Co Tipperary on the river Shannon and Enniskillen on
the Erne Waterway. Some of the 43 stations operate 2 lifeboats,
one for inshore rescues and another for offshore duties.
Commenting on the figures, RNLI Divisional Inspector for Ireland
Mr Colin Williams says: " It was another busy year for our volun-
tary crews, with the continued improvements in technology and a
strong emphasis on training of our volunteers, lifeboats are reach-
ing casualties faster. As a charity the RNLI only exists through the
generousity of our volunteers. From the men and women who give YOUGHAL GAA FOOTBALLERS PLAY UNDER
up their time to train and be available to serve on our lifeboats, to NEW FLOODLIGHTS AT PAIRC EOCHAILL
the station management and our fundraising volunteers, they all
have a vital role to play".

YOUGHAL BADMINTON CLUB Irish Heart Foundation Table Top Quiz

At the Devonshire Arms Hotel
Picture Michael Hussey
Youghal's Division 6 team has continued its impressive league
form into the new year winning all 3 matches. A revenge home
defeat of then league leaders St Marys by 4-3, was followed by a
5-2 away win at Bartlemy and a recent 6-1 home defeat of
Churchtown. Youghal have finished top of league section A with
5 wins out of 6 and now head into the upcoming league playoff
semi-final on March 25th full of confidence where the likely
opponents will be UCC.
The team also had a decent run in the Cup beating Bartlemy and
St Marys B to reach the semi-finals in Mahon. However, short
notice of the semi-final match and prior commitments of some of
the players meant the team had to compete against Ballinadee with
a man short. It was a great achievement to draw 3-3 on the day
having to forfeit one match but unfortunately Ballinadee advanced 1st Prize-'No Hopers' Team- Declan Hennessy, Sean Hennessy, Tommy Roche and
to the final on a points count-back. Kitty O'Sullivan pictured with Fiona McDevitt, Irish Heart Foundation Volunteer,
The club would like to express sincere thanks to Timmy Mason Jim Furey MC and Frank Kiely, Manager
for his continuous help and support especially during our home
matches. We would also like to wish Paul Hegarty well after his
recent retirement from the club.
We are holding a fundraising Table Quiz on Friday 23rd March in
the GAA club bar at 8pm. Teams of four cost €30 to enter with
cash prizes on offer. A raffle will also be held on the night and all
are welcome to attend.

Imokilly Macra na
Feirme Celebrate
50th Anniversary

Claire Foley, Liam Foley (Dairygold, sponsor), Imelda Lynch, Colm

Markey National president of Macra na Feirme, Alison Tait regional sec-
retary, Linda Kenneally and Brian O'Connell regional chairman

Myrtle Allen who in 1959 became

the first lady to be elected vice pres-
ident of Macra na Feirme in Ireland
Pauline Meade and Mary Kingston cutting the cake with Alison Tait
Ballymacoda regional secretary

An outstanding and wonderful success is how I would describe

our 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Imokilly Regional Olivia Morrissey, Brenda Wall, Ruth Mellerick, Annette Carey
Executive held in Garryvoe Hotel on Saturday last Feb 24th. It
was a great event which allowed both past and present members
of macra to get together in celebration of 50 years of the region.
Many of the past members hadn't seen each other for years and it
was a great opportunity to catch up on their current situations and
reminisce about past times in macra. There was a little help too
with people able to view many photos of fun times in the region
both past and present.
Our main sponsor, to whom we are very grateful was Dairygold
and board member Liam Foley spoke about Dairygolds new struc-
ture and also about the opportunities that the bio fuel industry
could present to farmers in the future. Our National President,
Colm Markey spoke of the firm friends, the craic and fun element
of macra as well as the personal development gained from being
involved in the organisation. The main message was that "you get
out of Macra what you put into it" and anyone who has been and
is involved in the organisation can definitely confirm and reiterate
that!
One of the highlights of the night was the cutting of the 50th
Anniversary cake, sponsored by Ballymaloe House and cut by
Alison Tait, current Regional secretary and Myrtle Allen propri-
etor of Ballymaloe House, who was very involved in the regional
executive in its early years and held the position of National Vice
President for the terms 1960/61 and 1962/63 - a major achieve-
ment.
Our master of ceremonies on the night was Alison Tait, current
regional secretary who did a superb job. The organising commit-
tee was made up of seven people, all of whom had a major role to
play in organising and ensuring the success of this event. They are
as follows: Alison Tait, Brian O'Connell, Martin Manning, Paddy
Rice, Tom McGrath, Imelda Lynch and myself Linda Kenneally.
We had many other sponsors as well to whom we are most grate-
ful, each of whom took out adds in our souvenir booklet. Thanks
also to those who provide spot prizes and of course to Garryvoe
Hotel who were very helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

dromes often have serious life-threat- Fiona Hennessy, Soft Ireland; Ann Rea, La Bella Roma pictured with Barbara

delay and limited life expectancy.
More girls then boys are born with
these syndrome. The incidence of tri-
somy 13 is about 1 in 10,000 of total
births while that of trisomy 18 is
about 2.5 in 10,000 of total births. Claire and Ruby Kennedy
Soft support family of babies that
have passed or family who have children still living they also put
families in contact with one another, provide information, publish
regular newsletters, organise professional speakers and confer-

year ago, she lived for six weeks. I am now on committee of Soft
