6. An oscillator is used to send waves

along a stretched cord. Four
1. complete wave cycles fit on a 20 cm length of
the cord when the frequency of the oscillator is
30 Hz.
For this wave, calculate:
A>B
a its wavelength 20 cm = 0.2 m/4 = 0,05m
A>B b its frequency 30 Hz

Frequency = 1/period c its speed.
A) F= 1/ 0.01s = 100Hz Speed = Frequency x wavelngeth
Speed = 30 Hz x 0.05 m
2. B) F= 1/0,02s = 50Hz Speed = 1,5 m/s

340m/s : 340 Hz = 1m
340m/s : 170 Hz = 2m
wave speed = Frequency x wavelength
Wavelength = wave speed/ frequency

3. Middle C on a piano tuned to concert pitch

should have a frequency of 264 Hz (Figure
15.10). If the speed of sound is 330 m s–1,
calculate the wavelength of the sound produced
when this key is played.
wavelength = Speed wave : Frequency
330m/s : 264 Hz = 1,25 m or 125 cm
4. Sound is a mechanical wave that can be
transmitted through a solid. Calculate the
frequency of sound of wavelength 0.25 m
that travels through steel at a
speed of 5060 m s–1.
Frequency = Speed : wavelength
5060m/s : 0.25 m = 20240 Hz

5. A cello string vibrates with a frequency of 64
Hz.Calculate the speed of the transverse waves
on the string given that the wavelength
is 140 cm.
Speed = Frequency x wavelength
64 Hz x 1.4 m = 89.6 m/s
