Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A lesbian is a homosexual woman who experience sexual, romantic, physical

attraction to another woman. In short, a lesbian is a woman who attracted to another

woman. Even they accept that they are homosexual they will not be prevented from being

discriminated and being bullied. Kotch (2014), reports that many lesbians undergo sexual

identity change during their secondary years where they accept and disclose their sexual

orientation.

This study focusing on the challenges and discrimination experienced by lesbian. In the

absence of federal legislation, local government units across the Philippines began to

enact their own anti-discrimination ordinances that prohibit discrimination on the basis of

sexual orientation and gender identity.

In one of the public secondary schools in Division of Negros Occidental,

Guiljungan National High School experiences many cases of bullying and discrimination

to the member of lgbt specifically lesbians. Schools should be safe places for everyone.

But in some schools, students who are lesbian too often find that their schooling

experience is marred by bullying and discrimination.

In recent years, lawmakers and school administrators in the Philippines have

recognized that bullying of lgbt youth is a serious problem. In 2012, the Department of

Education (DepEd), which oversees primary and secondary schools, enacted a Child
2

Protection Policy designed to address bullying and discrimination in schools, including

on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The focus of the study is the high school experiences of lesbian students. This

study examined whether and how lesbian students experience bullying, discrimination,

and or hate bias because of their perceived or recognized lesbian sexuality. This study

will further indicate any discrimination and bullying experienced by lesbian students.

Even though school environments are often hostile for lesbian individual some take a

stance of being open and being visible in their same sex attraction and as a result they are

confronted by negativity and harassment from their fellow students (Morrow, 2014).

This study is a very serious problem. Moreover, sexual minority students report

experiencing psychological challenges including depression, hopelessness, worthlessness,

alienation, and extreme loneliness. Lesbian individuals are confronted by multiple of

challenges which may result increase risk for negative mental health outcomes which in

turn affects their emotional functioning (Poland, 2010).

Lesbian students who attend in unfriendly environments and in school full of

discriminations are more likely to alienate themselves form these homophobic

environments by being absent or dropout (Whelan, 2006). Homosexual students can

prevent this challenges by achieving academic successes (Troiden, 2011).

A range of literature has been included to indicate that many of the findings in

older research are similar to those in more recent research. This suggest that

discrimination and bullying for LGBT, specifically lesbian is still an issue in the society.

Although this research focuses on lesbians much of the literature refers to lesbian, gay,

bisexual, and transgender or commonly known as LGBT.

Statement of the Problem

This study will aim to explore the lived experiences of the three lesbian students

who are officially enrolled at Guiljungan National High School, Guiljungan, Cauayan,

Negros Occidental, School Year 2019-2020.

Specifically, this will seek to answer the questions, "What are the lived

experiences of the lesbian students?"

Theoretical Framework

Homosexual standpoint theory and feminist theory were used as a theoretical fit

on this study. Homosexual standpoint theory focused on the sexual orientation whereby a

person needs, desires, and responds towards other person of the same gender and also

focused on the knowledge that comes from the experiences and challenges that were

common to homosexual or Lesbian and gay (Ilyayambwa, 2012). The use of theoretical

perspectives allows for an analysis that provides clarity and understanding to the

phenomenon that participants in this study experienced bullying and discrimination. The

research was an exploratory study of the challenges experienced by lesbian students.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers will explore the life story, challenges and experiences of lesbian

students in Guiljungan National High School, Guiljungan Cauayan Negros Occidental by

using an interview guide. The interviews will be transcribed. The researchers re-read

them several times to familiarized and emerge themselves to the data. Data were analyzed

by using the Interpretative Analysis (Saldana, 2009), and the content of the the self-made
4

questionnaire will be validated by three professionals who were an expert in the field of

psychology.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be significant to the following:

Guidance Counselor. To determine the effect of being a lesbian student the

behavior, attitude and academic performances and to make a necessary intervention to

address problem that may arise from such exposure.

Teachers. The result of the study may provide insight to the teachers as they

move along with their service and may give further knowledge on the challenges
5

encountered of being a lesbian student that they can share to their student and gives an

advice.

Parents. The result of the study can provide a certain fear that will help the

parents to know the challenges and sacrifices ot their children to have a better future.

Students. This may help to the student to be aware in this problem and may give

many lessons to be learned.

Future Researchers. The result of the study may serve as baseline of the future

researcher to conduct similar topics to be more meaningful.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will explore the lived experiences of three lesbian students enrolled at

Guiljungan National High School, Guiljungan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental. Its intents to

shed light on the meaning making experience of being a lesbian student. The focus of this

study is on how lesbian experience this phenomenon. The study dealt lesbian students

residing in Guiljungan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental. These lesbian students were

determined by the following criteria given by the researchers (a) lesbian, (b) 14-20 years

old, (c) currently enrolled in a secondary educational institution, (d) has a girl partner,

and (e) willing to participate in the study.

Definition of terms

The terms are conceptually and operationally defined.

Challenges. A challenge is something new and difficult which requires great

effort and determination.

6

Experience. Is the knowledge or mastery of an event or subject gained through

involvement in or exposure to something.

Lesbian. A lesbian is a homosexual woman who experience sexual, romantic,

physical attraction to another woman.

Lived experiences. As the tittle and research suggest, the focus of this study

stresses the experiences of rural community college-going student as they are lived

(Clandinin & Rosiek, 2007).

Researchers. A person who carries out academic or scientific research and a

person whose job involves discovering or verifying information for use in a book,

program, etc.

Perceptions. The state of being or process of becoming aware of something

through the senses and the way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something.

Student. A person why is studying at school or college, denoting someone who is

studying in order to enter a particular profession and a person who takes an interest in a

particular subject.

Chapter 2

Methods

This chapter presents the research design, participants of the study, setting of the

study, validity and reliability, data gathering instruments and data analysis.

Research Design

This researcher will conduct a qualitative study. This qualitative study used a

content analysis approach. This research design is phenomenological which aims to

discover the lived experiences of the participants which is usually conducting in a natural

setting, where researchers become the key of data collection and analysis. This qualitative

study utilized phenomenological approach. It aims to investigate the experience of

lesbian-students - how it is to be a lesbian student. A qualitative research according to

Mills and Bricks (2014), aims to examine a phenomenon that impact on the lived reality

of individuals or groups in a cultural and social context. The researchers found this

method most applicable to the inquiry in order to provide a comprehensive analysis on

the lived experiences of lesbian students.

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted at Guiljungan National High School, Guiljungan,

Cauayan, Negros Occidental, School Year 2019-2020.

8

Sampling Technique

This research will be used purposive sampling, the researchers can choose their

participants that will be fit for the study (Dever & Frankel, 2000). The researcher made

initial contact with a person who had characteristics relevant to the researcher topic and

was then referred to other (Bryman, 2012). In this study, the researcher approach the

Lesbian society in campus and first made contact with an individual who was willing to

participate. The individual reffered the researcher to other lesbian individuals who were

asked if they would be willing to participate in the research.

Participants of the Study

The participants of this study will the three lesbian students of Guiljungan

National High School, Guiljungan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, School Year 2019-2020.

These participants were identified using purposive sampling.

The table below presents the participant for in-depth interviews.

Table 1. Participants of the Study

9

Research Instrument

This study will adapt the interview research design in which a self-made

questionnaire is use to obtain information from the participants.

The interview guide is consisted questions about the demographic profile of the

lesbian students and focuses in querying about their lived experiences as a lesbian student

and the reason why they become lesbian. Phenomenology is an approach to qualitative

research that focuses on the commonality of a lived experience within a particular group.

The fundamental goal of the approach is to arrive at a description of the nature of the

particular phenomenon. Other forms of data such as documents, observations, and art

may also be used. The data is then read and reread and called for like phrases and themes

that are then group to form.

Ethical Consideration

Ethical consideration in research are critical. Ethics are the norms or standards for

conduct that distinguish between right and wrong. They help to determine the difference

between the acceptable and unacceptable behaviour and the part of ethical issues are

important in all type of research regardless of the type research, the should take into

consideration both general research principle and those that are more specific to the type

of research (Creswell, 2013).

The participants are said to be most precious gems that must be protected by the

research into the study, whether it is qualitative or quantitative approach,

phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, action or historic.

10

The researchers sought the approval of the lesbian students though a letter of

permission to Conduct Survey and Interview and Profile of Key informants detailing

important about their lived experiences and other key information that helped the

researchers improve their study.

To ensure confidently in the Conduct of the study, participants did not use their

and identified them only using Pseudonyms Personal information will not be revealed nor

published to future readers and researchers. This study adhered to film consideration of

the principles and guidelines of research ethics.

Validity and Reliability of the Instrument

Validity in qualitative research means appropriateness of the tool, processes, and

data. Whether the research question is valid for the desire outcome, the choice of

methodology is appropriate for answering the research question, the design is valid for

the methodology, the sampling and analysis is appropriate, and finally the result and

conclusions are valid for the sample and context (Leung, 2015).

In qualitative research, reliability refers to exact reliability of the processes and

the result. In qualitative research with diverse paradigms, such definition of reliability is

challenging and epistemologically counter-intuitive. Hence, the essence of reliability for

qualitative research lies with consistency (Leung, 2015).

Reliability can be thought of us consistency. A test is considered reliable if the

researchers get the same result repeatedly. For example, if a test designed to measure a

trait (such as introversion), then each time the test is administered to a subject, the result
11

should be approximately the same. Unfortunately, it is impossible to calculate reliability

exactly, hut it can be estimated in a number of different ways(Cherry, 2016).

In this study the researchers used the member checking also known as informant

feedback or respondent validation were in the interviewer stribed to build rapport with

the interviewee in order to obtain honest and open responses. Which this technique, the

researcher stated or summarized information and then questioned the participants to

determine accuracy. This allowed the participants to critically analyze the findings and

comment on them. The participants either affirmed that the summarise reflect their views,

feelings, and experiences, or that they do not reflect this experiences. If the participants

affirmed the accuracy and completeness, then the study is said to have credibility member

checked are not without fault but serve to decrease the incidence of incorrect data and the

incorrect interpretation of data. The overall goal of this process was to provide findings

that are authentic, original and reliable.

The open-ended questions for in-depth interview were subjected to content

validation by experts of Guiljungan National High School to ensure that true essence and

meaning of participants' experiences. The survey questionnaire acquired an average of

4.113 meaning of the questionnaire was accepted and valid.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering data for the study were identified a semi-structured interview will be

used in collecting data. This type of interview was the most familiar strategy in collecting

qualitative study (Bloom & Crabtree, 2006), which helps the researchers to obtain all the

necessary information needed and allow the researchers ask follow-up questions for
12

clarification. The content of the interview guide will be validated by three professional

who were expert in field of psychology. The researcher will also provide an agreement

that obtaining informed consent, ensured, confidentiality, time and place commitment,

permission to record and publish to the participants. In addition, the researchers seek top

permit from the principal of the school where the study will be conducted.

Also, the participants will be given informed consent before the interview will be

conducted. The agreement between parties will be secured to ensure the conduct of the

study will be realized. The time and date of interview will be agreed.

Data Analysis

The process of data analysis is qualitative research involves making sense of the

collected information by (a) preparing the data analysis, (b) conducting different analysis,

(c) moving differ in to an understanding the phenomenon, (d) representing the data, and

(f) interpreting the findings (Creswell, 2003, cited in Jones et. al, 2008).

Data were analyzed using modified version of phenomenological data analysis in

method outline by Creswell. The further clarify on the steps use, the student researchers

consider the steps used by Maranon (2011) and Ryals (2011) cited in Yogore (2013) in

their studies. These steps are as follow:

Conducting the qualitative or in-depth interview. The in-depth interviews were

used to three (3) participants in order to obtain their lived experiences. In interviewing

the students, researchers considered informal and tropical-guided interview using open-

ended questions.
13

Practicing Horizontalization or Developing Reflective Insights.

Phenomenological data analysis follows the establish protocol or horizontalization of data

in which statements relevant to the topic would identify, reorganization of the

information into clusters of meaning and the meeting of these cluster making a general

descriptionof the phenomenon both textually and structurally. The textual description

reviews that experienced, while the structured description reviews "how" the

phenomenon will experience (Creswell, 1998, as cited by Armstrong, 2009). Statement

that will repetitive, vague or overlapped were incorporated into other statements or

eliminated from the list. The resulting non-repetitive, non-overlapping statements will

invariant (Ryals, 2011).

Epoch or mind-bracketing/phenomenological reduction. Epoch in Greek

Philosophy, means "suspension of judgement", a principle originally espoused by no

dogmatic philosophical Sceptics of the ancient the Ancient Greek Academy who, viewing

the problem of knowledge as insoluble, proposed that, when controversy arises, an

attitude of non-involvement should be adopted in order to gain peace of mind for daily

living (www.britanicaonline.com). This can be done through locating first within the

personal experiences or self-Story, key phrases and statemens that speaks directly to the

phenomenon in question, second, interpreting the meanings of these phrases as possible,

next is, inspecting for what they reveal about the essential recurring features ot the

phenomenon being studies. Lastly is to offer a tentative statement or definition of the

phenomenon is terms of the essential recurring identified (Denzin, 1989).

Developing Thematic Insights. Themes were developed from these statements.

Statements were placed into clusters each theme. Themes serve as levels for each cluster
14

and represents core components of these experience. Themes were compared to the

transcript to determine if they were accurately reflection of the experience. Themes that

were not accurate reflections of the experience were eliminated. This process contributed

to the validity of the remaining statements (Ryal, 2010).

Formulating Eidetic Insight. Individuals' textural and structural description of

the participant's experiences were combined to form composite textural and structural

narratives that encompass each experience of the participants. In the composite provide a

clear understanding of the lived experiences of those who are lesbian students as an aid in

Practical Research.
