Assignment: Radiation Heat Transfer

1. Two parallel planes 2 m × 1 m are placed 1 m apart. The temperatures of the planes are at 727
o
C and 227 oC and their emissivity are 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The planes are located in a large
room, the walls of which are at 27 oC. Determine the radiation heat transfer by each plane and
the heat received by the walls of the room. (Ans: 25.42 kW, 1.166 kW, 24.93 kW)
2. A hemispherical shaped cavity with a radius of 0.75 m is covered by a plate. The plate has a
hole of 0.25 m diameter in its centre. The inner part of the plate is maintained at 550 K by a
heater placed in the surface. If the surface to be taken as black and the hemisphere is well
insulated, calculate the following
(i) The temperature of the hemispherical surface (Ans: 546 K)
(ii) The power input required to the heater (Ans: 256 W)
3. A heater of 1 m diameter is surrounded by a hemisphere of 4 m diameter. The surface where
the heater is placed is maintained at 400 K with the emissivity as 0.8. The heater surface is
found to be at 1000 K. The remaining base area is open to surroundings at 300 K. The
surroundings can be considered as black surface. If the emissivity of the heater surface is 0.8.
Calculate the heat transfer from the heater to the hemisphere and to the surroundings. (Ans:
20.494 kW, 14.092 kW)
4. In Question 3, if the surface which is maintained at 400 K is considered as insulated and acts
as a reradiating surface, determine the heat flow from the heater surface to the hemispherical
surface. (Ans: 34.515 kW)
