There is a story of a great doctor, Dr. Christian Bernard who was a visionary and
pioneered the procedure of heart transplantation. Bernard rose from a humble
background. He was born in a rural town of Beaufort West in South Africa. He
studied in local high school and later got admission in medicine at the University
of Cape Town.
In 2017, the 50th anniversary of the first human to human heart transplant was
celebrated. This first, daring operation was carried out by Dr. Christian Bernard at
Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on December3rd, 1967. This first of its kind
operation not only received immense attention all over the world but also paved the
way for later sophisticated, scientific heart surgeries.
Read the book One Life by Christian Barnard. There is narration of the
story of excitement, anxiety, failure and success of the heart transplant
operation.
