STEPS/RATIONALE 1 2 3 4

1. Moisten the washcloths with water and put in a plastic bag with
the cleanser

2. Warm the bag in the microwave for 60 to 90 seconds

3. Test the temperature of the cloths before touching a resident

with them and be careful when you open the bag, as steam can
burn you.

After completing the preparations for the bath:

4. Use the first washcloth on your hand like a mitt to wash the
resident’s face, eyes, and neck

5. Use the second washcloth to wash the arm, shoulder, and

underarm farthest away from you

6. Repeat on arm closest to you with a fresh cloth

7. Pat underarm dry. Apply deodorant. Clean resident’s nails.

9. While Dry well under breasts and in any folds of the skin. Allow
the rest of the chest to air dry

10. Empty Use a fresh cloth to cleanse leg farthest away from you

11. Put the towel on the bed along the person’s back. Fold down
the blanket. Wash the person’s neck, back, buttocks (rear end),
and thighs (upper legs). Rinse the washcloth in the basin and
remove the soap from the washed areas. Dry the back,
buttocks, and thighs. Ask the person if he would like to have a
back rub with the warmed lotion.
This will allow to clean up the natural folds in our skin.
12. The perineum is the last area to be washed. Wear disposable
gloves when washing this area. This area is also called the pubic
area or genital area. It is the area between the thighs and
includes the genitals and anus. Washing the perineum keeps the
body from smelling and becoming infected.
Cleaning the area between the vagina and the rectum will
provide comfort to the patient as it is the area that harbors
more microorganism due to secretions.

After the bath:

13. Rub lotion onto the person’s arms, legs, feet, or other dry skin
areas. Help to dress the person. Offer to help him with mouth,
hair, foot, or nail care

him/her more comfort for a total clean up .

items used to give the bath.
