TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

This report comprises the summary of the commercial/ residential building of

Nilkanta Agrawal Ithari -6 Nepal. The reports consist of the design procedures
adopted, the assumptions made, the inputs made in the design and the design output.
During the design, it is assumed that the client will completely follow the architectural as
well as the structural design. It is also assumed that the construction will be
supervised by professional engineer.

The designer will not be responsible if any alterations to the structural system made by
the client or the contractor without the prior written permission from the designer, or the
alterations to non-structural system made such that the weight of each individual floor or
the weight of the whole building is altered by more than 10% of design weight of each
floor and the total weight.

The design calculations and derivations are limited to only a minimum to let the
concerned people know the methodology adopted. However, the calculations may be
provided to the client or concerned authorities when needed, upon request. The
building is newly designed conforming to 1994 Nepal National Building code, and
expects underlying intent of Life Safety performance under design earthquake.

3. Loading

3.1 Dead Loads

Dead loads include the self weight of the structure and all other permanent loads such
as partitions, floor finish, etc, which are fixed in position and invariable with time. Dead
loads are calculated based on IS 875:1987 part 1
Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) 25 KN/m3
Brick masonry along with plaster in wall 18.85 KN/m3
Floor Finishing Rooms with plaster punning 20.4 KN/m2

3.2 Live loads

Live loads include movable or moving loads without acceleration. This includes
movable partitions, furniture, equipments, people, vehicles, stored materials, etc. Live
loads are calculated based on IS 875:1987 part II
Rooms 2,3,4KN/m2
Balcony / Stair 4 KN/m2
Roof 1.5 KN/m2
Roof (Inaccessible) 0.75 KN/m2
Toilet 2 KN/m2

3.3 Earthquake loads

Earthquake load has been calculated based on IS 1893:2000. Basically, horizontal

seismic forces shall be considered for the structures that depends on different
parameters. Different parameters for generating earthquake loads are:
Seismic Zone :V (as per classification of IS 1893)
Zone factor(Z) :0.36
Importance Factor :1.0 (for Commercial building)
Reduction Factor :5 (for SMRF)
Soil Type : loose
Height of building :9.6m
Fundamental Time Period :0.5076 seconds
Spectral Acceleration (Sa/g) :PC
Hor. Seismic Coefficient (Ah) :(Z*I/2*R) *Sa/g = PC
Seismic Weight of building (W s ) :DL+0.25(LL≤3)+DL+0.5(LL>3) = PC KN
Base Shear (Vb) : Ah * Ws = PC KN

3.4 Load Cases and Combinations

3.4.1 Load Cases

Load cases are the independent loadings for which the structure is explicitly analyzed.
Earthquake forces occur in random fashion in all directions. For buildings, whose
lateral load resisting elements are oriented in two principal directions, it is usually
sufficient to analyze in these to principal directions (X – and Y – direction) separately
one at a time. Thus, the load cases adopted are as follows:

i. Dead Load (DL)

ii. Live Load (LL)
iii. Earthquake load in +ve X- direction
iv. Earthquake load in - ve X- direction
v. Earthquake load in +ve Y- direction
vi. Earthquake load in - ve Y- direction

3.4.2 Load Combinations

Load combinations are the loadings formed by the linear combination of the
independent loading conditions. The different load cases have been combined as per
Clause 6.3.1.2 of IS 1893:2002 Part I. The load combinations are as follows:

i. 1.5D.L
ii. 1.5 DL + 1.5 LL
iii. 1.2 DL + 1.2 LL + 1.2 EQ (+X)
iv. 1.2 DL + 1.2 LL + 1.2 EQ (-X)
v. 1.2 DL + 1.2 LL + 1.2 EQ (+Y)
vi. 1.2 DL + 1.2 LL + 1.2 EQ (-Y)
vii. .9 DL +1.5 EQ (+X)
viii. .9 DL +1.5 EQ (-X)
ix. .9 DL +1.5 EQ (Y)
x. .9 DL +1.5 EQ (-Y)
xi. 1.5 DL +1.5 EQ (X)
xii. 1.5 DL+1.5 EQ(-X)

xiv. 1.5 DL+1.5 EQ(-Y)

3.5 Analysis and Design

The analysis has been carried out using a standard software package ETABS 2016 V
16.2.1 based on finite element method. The software is capable of carrying out a
Three-Dimensional analysis. It can account for the rigid zones at the beam - column
junction. It has a capability to create a special joint at any grid intersection.

A Three-Dimensional Linear elastic analysis has been carried out. A model based on
Rigid Diaphragm Concept has been considered. This is done by creating a special joint
at the centre of mass of each floor level and constraining all the joints at this level by a
diaphragm constraint.

The stiffness contribution of brick walls on the structure has been ignored and the
building has been modeled as a “Bare Frame” with no infill wall panels.

The flange effect of the slab has been neglected. The beams have been modeled as
rectangular beams.

3.5.1 Level of Design

The design is considered as “Professionally Engineered Structure”.

3.5.2 Method of Seismic Analysis

The building can be classified as an regular

one. The program automatically calculates
the centre of stiffness and centre of mass of
the structure. Therefore, Torsion is

9|Page
Figure 1 Application of Seismic Force at Floor Level
Initial Structural Modeling, Analysis & Design Report for commercial building structure

automatically accounted by the program itself. So, no extra calculation is needed to find
out extra forces due to torsion.

3.5.2.1 Design Seismic Foces

The computation of horizontal forces and their distribution has been carried out as
per clause 6.4.2 as per IS 1893:2002 Part I

The horizontal seismic shear force at the base of the structure is given by:

V = Ah*Wt
The horizontal seismic force coefficient Cd is given by:

Ah =(Z*I/2*R) *sa/g

The horizontal seismic force is distributed at each level i according to the following
equation:

Fi = V Wi hi / ∑ Wi hi

3.5.3 Design and Detailing

The design of reinforced concrete structural members includes selection of material

properties (grade of steel and concrete), shape and size of cross section, factor of
safety and amount of steel required. The design of reinforced concrete members is
carried out using limit state method as per IS 456: 2000. The limit state method is the
modern and latest design methodology. This method evolved around 1970’s. Prior to
this working stress method and ultimate load methods were in use. Limit state method
is based on the concept of multiple safety factors and attempts to provide adequate
safety at the ultimate loads and adequate serviceability at service loads. Limit state
method can be termed as an extension of Working state method and ultimate load
method.
