DETAILS OF ADVOCACY PLAN

PROBLEM AND RATIONALE:

Earth is such a watery place. Approximately 71% of the Earth's surface is covered with

water, and the oceans contain about 96.5% of all Earth's water. (“How Much Water is There on

Earth?”, 1993). In line with this, life below water exists and is part of nature and humankind.

Protecting this life will be crucial for the sustainability of Earth. Statistics show that 30 percent of

the world’s fish stocks are overexploited, reaching below the level at which they can produce

sustainable yields (“Life Below Water”, n.d.). Additionally, oceans absorb about 30 percent of the

carbon dioxide produced by humans, and a 26 percent rise is seen in ocean acidification since the

beginning of the industrial revolution (“Life Below Water”, n.d.).

UN has emphasized global awareness of life below water by including it in the Sustainable

Development Goals (SDGs). They emphasized how managing the world’s ocean is essential for

humanity and for the mitigation of the effects of climate change (“Life Below Water”, n.d.). One

problem that caused the current state of the Earth’s oceans is plastic pollution. An average of

13,000 pieces of plastic litter is found on every square kilometer of ocean (“Life Below Water”,

n.d.). In the Philippines alone about 2.7 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually and

20 per cent – or half a million tons – of that leaks into the oceans (Villa, 2018). Worldwide,

Philippines is the world’s third-largest ocean polluter despite a waste management act coming into

effect 18 years ago (Villa, 2018). Although certain laws have been implemented for this pollution,

it is perceived as inadequate.

This advocacy project aims to support UN’s movement on life below water focusing on

the reduction of plastic wastes that go through the oceans by making eco-bricks (made of recycled

plastic) as an alternative for usual bricks.

OBJECTIVES:

The purpose of this advocacy plan is to protect life below water through reduction of plastic

waste. The proponents’ objectives are:

1. Short- Term

a. to produce 3,000 to 3,200 eco bricks;

b. to reduce 3 tons of unrecyclable plastic waste in Metro Manila within 20 weeks;

c. to integrate ecological consciousness on engineering classes and teach earth building

techniques.

2. Long- Term

a. to raise environmental concern specifically on land and water pollution and promote

social responsibility on youth groups;

b. to use Eco bricks for local community development projects such as furniture, walls,

and buildings

c. to address the 14th sustainable development goal of the United Nations

EXPECTED OUTPUTS:

It is expected that there 3,000 students that will participate in the “Eco brick making”

project. At a duration of 4 hours, it is estimated that a single person can produce 2 Eco bricks. Each

Eco brick contains 500 grams of plastic waste. As a result, 3000 kilograms or 3 tons of plastic

waste is removed, reducing the possibility that these plastics could be washed out into the sea.

Moreover, these Eco bricks can be donated to the adopted community to build houses. As a pioneer

of this big project, we also expect other student organizations from UST or other schools to carry

out this initiative, raising social responsibility and environmental concerns.
