PROJECT ECO B.R.I.C.K
Earth is such a watery place. Approximately 71% of the Earth's surface is covered with
water, and the oceans contain about 96.5% of all Earth's water. (“How Much Water is There on
Earth?”, 1993). In line with this, life below water exists and is part of nature and humankind.
Protecting this life will be crucial for the sustainability of Earth. Statistics show that 30 percent of
the world’s fish stocks are overexploited, reaching below the level at which they can produce
sustainable yields (“Life Below Water”, n.d.). Additionally, oceans absorb about 30 percent of the
carbon dioxide produced by humans, and a 26 percent rise is seen in ocean acidification since the
UN has emphasized global awareness of life below water by including it in the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs). They emphasized how managing the world’s ocean is essential for
humanity and for the mitigation of the effects of climate change (“Life Below Water”, n.d.). One
problem that caused the current state of the Earth’s oceans is plastic pollution. An average of
13,000 pieces of plastic litter is found on every square kilometer of ocean (“Life Below Water”,
n.d.). In the Philippines alone about 2.7 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually and
20 per cent – or half a million tons – of that leaks into the oceans (Villa, 2018). Worldwide,
Philippines is the world’s third-largest ocean polluter despite a waste management act coming into
effect 18 years ago (Villa, 2018). Although certain laws have been implemented for this pollution,
it is perceived as inadequate.

The PROJECT ECO B.R.I.C.K: Battle of Ruaño in Caring for Keystone Species Below
Water is spearheaded by proponents together with UST- Simbahayan, EARTH- UST, and UST
ESC Officers. It is composed by 3 committees namely: (1) Logistics and Research Committee that
is involved with the planning, coordination and control of pre-event, actual event, and post event.
(2) Finance and Sponsorship Committee that is responsible for creating financial reports, direct
investment activities, develop strategies or find sponsorship for the event. And (3) Marketing and
Technology Committee for developing, implementing and executing strategic advertising plans
for the dissemination of the details of event with the use of modern technology.

PROJECT ECO B.R.I.C.K
EXPECTED OUTPUTS:
It is expected that there 3,000 students that will participate in the “Eco brick making”
project. At a duration of 4 hours, it is estimated that a single person can produce 2 Eco bricks. Each
Eco brick contains 500 grams of plastic waste. As a result, 3000 kilograms or 3 tons of plastic
waste is removed, reducing the possibility that these plastics could be washed out into the sea.
Moreover, these Eco bricks can be donated to the adopted community to build houses. As a pioneer
of this big project, we also expect other student organizations from UST or other schools to carry
