THE HUMAN PERSON AS IMAGO DEI

The Human
Person is
God’s image
and likeness
destined to be
in communion
with Him.
WHAT IS VOCATION?

From the
Latin word
“vocare”
which means
“to call”.
Universal Call to Holiness
The Universal Call to Holiness is a
teaching of the Roman Catholic
Church that all people are called to
be holy, and is based on Matthew 5:48
– "Be you therefore perfect, as also
your heavenly Father is perfect.". In
the opening pages of the Bible, the call
to holiness is expressed in the Lord's
words to Abraham: “Walk before me,
and be blameless” (Gen 17:1).
Chapter V of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium

...all the faithful of Christ of whatever rank or status,

are called to the fullness of the Christian life and to
the perfection of charity; ...They must follow in His
footsteps and conform themselves to His image
seeking the will of the Father in all things. They
must devote themselves with all their being to the
glory of God and the service of their neighbor.
The universal call to holiness
is rooted in baptism, and
the Paschal Mystery, which
configures a person to Jesus
Christ who is truly God and
truly man, thus uniting a
person with the Second
Person of the Blessed Trinity,
bringing him in communion
with intra-trinitarian life.
Our anointing at Baptism makes us share in Christ’s role
as priest, prophet, and king. We share in Christ’s priestly
mission. This is known as the priesthood of the faithful.
By Baptism, all of us share in the great
mission of Jesus to bring about the reign of
God. This means that each of us is called to
live a holy life of service in our church and
in our world
In the priesthood of the
faithful, each and every
one of us is called to:
Spread
Serve one
the Good
Worship another
News of
God and the
Jesus
Church
Christ.
How is priesthood of the faithful different from
ministerial priesthood?

In the sacrament of the Holy

Orders, priests and bishops
become member of the
ordained priesthood.
They participate in Christ’s priestly
mission in a special way. They
receive the grace to act in the
name of and in the person of
Christ.
Being part of the priesthood of the faithful is not the same as being
ordained priest. However, members of the priesthood of the faithful
work with ordained priests to lead and care for God’s people.
As baptized Catholics, Jesus calls us to work for the
reign of God in whatever vocation we choose.
These are some of the vocations to which Jesus
calls His people:

married people,
single people and
ordained ministers.

What is the sacrament of Holy Orders?
(CCC 1536) Holy Orders is the sacrament
through which the mission entrusted by
Christ to his apostles continues to be
exercised in the Church until the end of time:
thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry.
It includes three degrees:

Episcopate Presbyterate Diaconate

Why is the sacrament called “Orders”?

The word order in Roman antiquity

(Ordo) designated an established civil
body, especially a governing body.
Ordinatio (ordination) means
incorporation into an ordo. In the
Church there are established bodies
which Tradition, not without a basis in
Sacred Scripture, has since ancient times
called “orders.” (Heb 5:6; 7:11; Ps 110:4)
Why is the sacrament called “Orders”?

Today the word "ordination" is reserved

for the sacramental act which integrates
a man into the order of bishops,
presbyters, or deacons, and goes beyond
a simple election, designation,
delegation, or institution by the
community, for it confers a gift of the
Holy Spirit that permits the exercise of a
"sacred power" which can come only
from Christ himself through his Church.
Why is the sacrament called “Orders”?

Ordination is also called

consecratio, for it is a setting apart
and an investiture by Christ himself
for his Church. The laying on of
hands by the bishop, with the
consecratory prayer, constitutes
the visible sign of this ordination.
