Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The YouTube video will be played in the smart board or on a large
screen. Playing the video in a larger screen accommodates those students that have a hard time seeing small
print. The out loud pronunciation of each sound can help those that are not native English speakers as well as
those who might be visually impaired. YouTube can be accessed at home for those who wish to revisit the
lesson.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the letter sounds first at a slow pace. This will give the students an introduction to
what they will be seeing on the video. Then I will point to each individual letter and give the students the

sound that the letter makes. The students will repeat the sound. I will do this with all the alphabet. Once that
we have practicing a few times and the students have a better understanding of what sound each letter
makes I will then show them the video so that they can have a clearer audio of each letter sound. The
YouTube video will not take more than 8min total. The assessment for this lesson will consist of having the
students say the sound of the letters in their name. I will walk around and have each student tell me the
sounds. This will allow me to quickly get around the class and listen to each student.
To differentiate the lesson, I can have the students that are still having trouble tell me what letter
sounds they know so that I know what letters I can help with. I can also take the information given and create
a game that will include the letters that the students get confused on the most. We will continue practicing
letter sounds with sight words, this way they will already be preparing for upper grades. Once the students
have become fluent in letter sounds, we will begin introducing combinations of two letters. As feedback I will
let them know that there are letters that make more than one sound and that combining letters sometimes
changes the sound that a letter will make.
The final assessment that the student will be given will be an individual text in where the student will
be shown a letter on a flash card and the student will have to say the correct sound that the letter makes. I
will have sheet and mark a check if the student gave the correct sound or an X if the student gave an incorrect
sound.

Reflective Practice:
The lesson was created for kindergarten level. There will be students that did not get the opportunity to
attend a pre-k class and have no idea that letters have sounds. The YouTube video in this case will be used as
a tutorial for the students. The lesson is intended to be a review for those who already might be familiar with
letter sounds and a great introduction to letter sounds for those who are English learners or those who are
new to the letter sound concept. This lesson will not only help me identify those students that might need
extra help but also be help to those of a second language. The letter sounds can be taught in computer
games, using E-books and other electronic devices that allow for audio play.
