Oldest school?
I was interested in the claim made in the
Overleigh Roundabout that Eccleston is the
oldest voluntary aided school in Chester.
My understanding from the article is that
the school opened in 1875.
In December 2009 I retired as head of St
Thomas of Canterbury school in Walpole
Street, Chester. St Thomas’s opened its
doors to pupils on 25 March 1873. The
school was established with grant from the
National Society (as you will know it is the
national body for CE schools) and remains
to this day a voluntary aided school.
I just wanted to set the record straight.
However, well done on reaching this
particular milestone and I hope the school
community enjoys its celebrations.

WINTER SKINCARE
EXFOLIATION
Contrary to common belief, exfoliating will HYDRATE
your skin – not dehydrate - when treated with the correct
products.
The KEY to good skin health is to exfoliate during the cold
winter months as well as the summer months. There is little
point in putting a “rich cream” (or any other products) onto
your skin when they cannot be absorbed into the skin. The
product(s) just simply sit on the top of a layer of dead skin cells
rather than being absorbed. Using the correct ingredients to
exfoliate will help stimulate your skin’s hydration from within –
your hyaluronic acid.
Using PRIORI(R) Advanced AHA Cleanser will gently
exfoliate skin to a degree when used twice daily. However, in
addition the use of the Advanced AHA Invigorating Face and
Body Scrub will stimulate hydration and should be used three
times a week. The round particles in this product will gently
“micro polish” dead cells from the surface.
ACNE sufferers should use the scrub twice a week (avoiding inflamed open blemishes) and leave on the
skin for 2 minutes before rinsing off to allow a deeper cleansing action.
For skins with PIGMENTATION, exfoliation is crucial for allowing the skin to bring cells up to the
surface of the skin and prepare for a more even skin complexion.
Professional SKIN PEELS deeply moisturise, brighten the skin and slough away the effects of cold
weather and stress. The advanced AHA Multi-Layer Peeling System is superb in normalising the skin
and really hydrates it from the inside out and the outside in. It also uses the benefits of anti-irritant
ingredients for sensitivity and repairing complexes to strengthen the skin. The skin peel is followed by
the application of the Advanced AHA Replenishing Masque to complement the facial peel.
Our peels are still offered at the amazing price of £35.00 offering everyone the chance to reap the
benefits of a healthy skin.
On behalf of The Hough Green Clinic, Jane and Samantha wish all our clients and readers a very
happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2011.

Red and Gold in December
Gardening by Janet Heath
With the end of the year on its way the
garden closes down apart from some plants
that will continue to give form or colour in
the depths of winter.
Some shrubs will still have berries on them
until the cold weather forces the birds to eat
those still on shrubs. Holly berries, red against
deep green leaves should be around until the
harsh weather sets in. Cotoneasters come
in many varieties. The herringbone stems of
Cotoneaster horizontalis will lose their leaves
but hold on to the red berries. Cotoneaster
lacteus is an evergreen shrub or small tree with
arching stems carrying white flowers in spring
and red berries in winter.
The rich reds of Christmas can also be found in the foliage of the low growing Euphorbia
amygdaloides Purpurea with pink buds and greeny red leaves. Many of the red leaved Heucheras
keep some leaves over winter. Last year when the temperatures were low the Heucheras in my
garden kept their foliage throughout the frost and snow.
Plant contrasting yellow foliage alongside the reds to provide colour in winter. Try Euonymus
fortunei Emerald n Gold as ground cover or Choisya ternata Sundance for bright yellow foliage with
scented orange blossom flowers in summer. Another evergreen shrub that provides winter interest
is Garrya elliptica, the silk tassel bush. In winter it has long green grey catkins and would look good
in a mixed shrub border where you can see it from close quarters.
In mild weather, some roses may continue to
bloom, the occasional Penstemon may also
flower and fuschias may keep their flowers.
Look out for Hellebore flowers as they will
flower on and off throughout winter and are
well worth planting near a path in a slightly
shady position so you can admire their
blooms.
Make sure that tall growing brassicas such
as Broccoli are staked to prevent them from
being damaged by the wind. If not already
done, cut back tall growing roses to prevent
wind rocking the plant and damaging the
roots. Continue to prepare new borders by
double digging the soil and adding plenty of
organic matter such as well rotted manure.
Santa is very jolly because he knows where all the bad girls live - Dennis Miller

A CHARITY calendar is now

of Eccleston and the surrounding

the calendar
Helen Schielke, practice manager
for the Eccleston-based charity said: “We had a wonderful response to the appeal and we
would really like to thank everyone who submitted their photographs, it was a very difficult
decision to choose the images for the calendar. We managed to choose 12 entries that we
feel reflect the beauty of the area and village life.”
The calendars are now available to buy from the charity on 01244 678629 at £6 each.
