To compare customer satisfaction levels of two competing cable television companies, 294 customers of

Company 1 and 424 customers of Company 2 were randomly selected and were asked to rate their cable
companies on a five-point scale, with 1 being least satisfied and 5 most satisfied. The survey results are
summarized in the following table:

Company 1 Company 2

n1=294 n2=424

x1=4.52 x2=4.27

s1=0.53 s2=0.54

Test at the 1% level of significance whether the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that
Company 1 has a higher mean satisfaction rating than does Company 2.

The EA Sports markets a new computer game with two experimental packaging designs. Design 1 is
sent to 15 stores; their average sales the first month is 55 units with sample standard deviation 11
units. Design 2 is sent to 10 stores; their average sales the first month is 49 units with sample
standard deviation 9 units. Construct a point estimate and a 95% confidence interval for the
difference in average monthly sales between the two package designs.

A manufacturer of walk-behind push mowers receives refurbished small engines from two new
suppliers, A and B. It is not uncommon that some of the refurbished engines need to be lightly
serviced before they can be fitted into mowers. The mower manufacturer recently received 150
engines from A and 155 from B each supplier. In the shipment from A, 17 needed further service. In
the shipment from B, 13 needed further service. Test whether the data provide sufficient evidence
to conclude that there exists a difference in the proportions of engines from the two suppliers
needing service.
