Probability sampling

Random Sampling
Each member of the population has an equal and known chance of being
selected. Use MS Excel to generate random numbers.
Advantages
 Simple
 Error easily measured
Disadvantages
 Need complete list of units
 Units scattered and poorly accessible
Systematic Sampling
Every kth member ( for example: every 10th person) is selected from a list
of all population members.
Advantages
 Simple
 Error easily measured
Disadvantages
 Need complete list of units
 Periodicity
Stratified Sampling
Population is divided into two or more groups called strata, according to
some criterion, such as age income and subsamples are randomly selected
from each strata.
Advantages
 Can obtain information about whole population and individual strata
 Higher precision if low variability within strata
Disadvantages
 Can be difficult to identify strata
 Loss of precision if small strata
