About the Course:

This course is intended to provide an understanding of the current theory and practice of
database management systems. The course provides a technical overview of database
management systems, using a current database product such as MS-SQL Server. In addition
to technical concerns, more general issues are emphasized. These include data independence,
integrity, security, recovery, performance, database design principles, and database
administration.

Introduction:
The recent scams in misuse of data by Analytics companies, the management of data and
databases become paramount to not only those organizations that use databases platforms but
also those companies that are vendors of databases. Information is a resource that is
significant to any organization. It is critical input to any managerial task. Managers need high
quality information to manage change in a dynamic business environment. Many
organizations have their own data centres for storing and retrieving their company data,
which is humungous, which leads us to the term BIG Data. Ultimately the data is processed
with sophisticated intelligence tools that will help organizations to achieve their strategic
goals.

While the course focus is not on how to prepare BIG data draw upon their Business
Intelligence, it is the intention of the course to equip the students with the key concepts
related to Database design and management. The course aims at building skills related to data
modelling, data storage and retrieval of strategic information from large repositories of
enterprise data. The course would also introduce the basic concepts, techniques and
applications of Data Warehousing and Data Mining to the participating students.

Course Objectives:

The objectives of course (aligning with the SDMIMD Vision Statement) is are as
follows:

 To have a broad, managerial perspective of an organization’s need for data and

thereof information.
 To provide a theoretical basis for database design, including study of data
structures, data models, normalization and comparisons of object oriented and
relational systems.

1

 To provide practical applications of database management systems, including

programming applications using SQL and a relational database management
system.
 To explore implications for database management systems for Internet and
electronic commerce applications.

Pedagogy:

 Lectures, class discussions, and Case Studies

 Reading and homework assignments
 Database Querying using lab assignments on MS-SQL Server 2013, a data
base management software platform.

- Organizational Excellence:
Improved decision-making leads to Organizational Excellence. Decision making is
improved by providing a multitude of data processed as information on dash boards
and multiple scenarios for analysts and business managers to contend with, for better
decision making. Streamlining internal operations, improving plant productivity,
reducing manufacturing costs are goals of certain industry. This can happen with the
right data available at the right time to take the right decision on the basis of the
information.
- Value Creation: Value creating processes vary from organization to organization.
Companies talk about reducing costs, volume and margin growth, reduce working
capital management, customer retention, elimination of non-performing assets,
focusing on R&D and innovation etc etc., as value creating processes. For all this to
happen proper data capture and data management and database maintenance is
essential.
- Dealing with change
At the fundamental level database are repositories that allow change and update to the
data stored in them, the change in their structure, change in their relationships and
associations, thereby storing the latest version of data and metadata. At the broader
level the databases in an organization are one component of an expansive
organizational memory. Any Information System management is to design, build and
maintain the information delivery/dissemination. The information delivery
requirement depends on the dynamic global environment. Thus, the information
system needs to evolve and change to meet the changing needs.
