Front Panel Display Retrofit

Overview
The original front panel display used by 8200 and 8282 is discontinued and is no longer available from the LCD
manufacturer. To repair 8200s with failed displays, Orban can supply a new display of different design. This
Orban factory retrofitting is required because field repair is impractical.

Typically, if the 8200 or 8282 only needs a replacement display and is otherwise processing audio properly,
return only the front panel to the factory. The 8200 or 8282 can process audio with the front panel removed.

You can use PC Remote Control with the front panel disconnected. Instructions for removing the front panel
follow.

However if the 8200 or 8282 needs other repairs in addition to display replacement, then the complete Optimod
should be returned to the factory.

In either case, please contact Orban Customer Service Department at 1-480-403-8300 for pricing and
return authorization number.

What does the new display look like?

The standard display (Figure 1) uses a fluorescent backlight. The fluorescent backlight of the standard display is
a common point of failure. Unfortunately, the backlight cannot be replaced because the LCD module is sealed.
The retrofit display (Figure 2) uses an electro-luminescent backlight.

Removing and Replacing the Front Panel

Tools you will need:
11/32-inch (or 9mm) nut driver
Phillips-head screwdriver
1. Remove the six Philips head screws at the top and bottom of the front panel (retain these screws for
reuse; DO NOT ship these with the front panel).

2. Grasp the edges of the panel, pull slightly forward, and, while holding the panel vertically, guide it
forward and downward on its two side supports. Flip the front panel down (refer to Figure 3).

3. Set the internal AC POWER switch to OFF and disconnect the power cord.

4. Temporarily remove the cardboard transit protection block (if present).

5. The Control board is in slot A9, the card furthest to the right when facing the front. Grasp the handle on
the Control Board and pull it towards you to unplug it. It is not necessary to remove the Control Board
completely; only pull it slightly forward to gain access to the ribbon cable connecting the Control Board
to the Display Board and carefully remove the plug without pulling on the cable.

6. Note the position of the front panel supports before loosening the fastening nuts. Using the 11/32 inch
(9mm) nut driver, remove the four nuts attaching the front panel to its supports. Make sure to support
the front panel while removing the fastening nuts.

7. Place the front panel in an anti-static protective bag (these and other packing materials are available at
most packaging stores).

Use a sturdy, double-walled carton of suitable dimensions. Pack it in the carton with at least
1.5 inches (4 cm) of cushioning on all sides of the unit. “Bubble” packing sheets, thick fiber
blankets, and the like are acceptable cushioning materials; foam “popcorn” and crumpled
newspaper are not.
