East Cobb Middle School Social Studies Grade 6 2019-2020

ECMS SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

GOAL:
The purpose of Social Studies in Cobb County Schools is to help students develop the ability to make informed
and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a society which is diverse, democratic and globally
interdependent.

OBJECTIVES: The students will be able to answer these questions:


1. How do the pieces of 6th grade Social Studies connect?
2. How does the past shape the present?
3. How does the governance of Europe affect the people of the region and its relationships globally?
4. How the economic decisions of Europe affect the people of the region and its relationships globally?
5. How has the geography, history, government, and economics of Australia impacted the people who live
there?
6. How has the geography, history, government, and economics of Canada impacted the people who live
there?

GRADING POLICY:
• Summative Assessments: 35%
• Formative Assessments: 40%
• Classwork: 20%
• Homework: 5%

CLASSROOM POLICIES:
1. Students are expected to come to class with the required materials.
2. Daily classroom participation is expected.
3. Daily classwork and homework assignments are given on a routine basis. Assignments are expected to be
turned in on the due dates.
4. It is the students’ responsibility to get makeup assignment or schedule make-up tests.
5. Teachers’ Blogs are updated weekly with the topics and assignments for the week. The blogs can be
found from the East Cobb Middle School homepage by looking under Staff and Faculty.
Cellphone/Device Policy
If a student is in possession of a cellphone/device upon entering a classroom…

• Cellphone/Devices must be docked in the pocket docking station upon entering class. (STUDENTS WILL NOT BE
PERMITTED TO RETURN THE DEVICE TO THEIR LOCKER, IF THEY ARE IN POSSESSION OF IT UPON ENTERING CLASS,
IT MUST BE DOCKED IN THE ASSIGNED DOCKING POCKET IN THE CLASSROOM).

• Cellphone/Devices should not be seen or heard in the classroom, lunchrooms, or at school unless it has been
deemed appropriate for instructional use ONLY by an instructor, enacting BYOD; which will be communicated
prior to or at the beginning of class.

LATE WORK / MAKE-UP WORK: Students are required to turn assignments in on time.
• Late assignments will receive PARTIAL credit - Students cannot earn a grade greater than 80% for late
assignments.
• All late assignments must be completed within the unit of study.
• Absences:
o Students are responsible for completing all missed assignments upon return from absences. It is
each student’s responsibility to retrieve missed assignments.
o Students are given one calendar day for each day absent to turn in work.
o There is a designated location where students can pick up make-up work.
o Make-up work IS NOT late work. Make-up work will be evaluated/graded.

HELP SESSIONS:
Social Studies extra help sessions will be held Fridays morning from 8:15 – 8:45 beginning August 16, 2019. A
schedule will be listed on teachers’ blogs for specific locations.
