GOOD MORNING GRADE 3G,
THIS WEEK IN MATH WE ARE
GOING TO START A NEW
CONCEPT:

STATISTICS
BEFORE WE BEGIN, CAN YOU ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS?

•DO YOU KNOW WHAT STATISTICS IS?

•HAVE YOU USED STATISTICS BEFORE?
•DO YOU KNOW WHAT COLLECTING DATA MEANS?
•WHY DO WE COLLECT DATA?
•WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN COLLECT DATA?
•WHAT ARE BAR CHARTS USED FOR?

NOW, TO HELP YOU ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ABOVE,

LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING BAR CHART AND SEE IF YOU CAN
ANSWER THE QUESTIONS RELATING TO IT…
Snack bar: sale of
sandwiches

Q/ WHICH SANDWICH HAD THE MOST SALES
Q/ CAN YOU TELL HOW MANY OF EACH TYPE OF SANDWICH WAS SOLD, IF YOU
SAID NO WHY NOT?

NOW, LET’S USE A SCALE OF 10 SANDWICHES FOR EACH SQUARE. NUMBER THE
VERTICAL AXIS 0, 10, 20, 30…

Q/ HOW MANY EGG SANDWICHES WERE SOLD?

Q/ HOW MANY PEOPLE BOUGHT CHICKEN SANDWICHES?
TALLY CHARTS, PICTOGRAMS AND BAR
CHARTS CAN SHOW INFORMATION OR DATA
CLEARLY WITHOUT USING A LOT OF WORDS
• OR LISTS OF NUMBERS.

• TWENTY-FOUR CHILDREN WERE ASKED, “WHICH AFTER SCHOOL CLUB DO
YOU LIKE THE BEST?” THEY WROTE THE NAME OF THEIR PREFERRED CLUB
ON A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER AND PLACED THEIR VOTE IN A SEALED BOX.
HERE ARE THEIR VOTES.

Frequency

The term “frequency” means. (how often something
occurs)
We group tally marks in fives using a symbol, called

“closing the gate”. IIII

In the previous slide is a blank tally chart, try to work
out the tally by adding the votes for the clubs, put a
mark against the club name in the tally chart. You
will then count the number of tally marks for each
club and write the total in the frequency column…

Did you find this easy?

Did you need help to complete it?

If you didn’t need help, well done!!!

If you did need help, don’t worry, you’ll get better at

this!

Let’s look at your end results, does it match mine?

(see the next slide)
How can we be sure that we have counted all of the votes?
In order to check your votes, remember 24 children voted, then the total of the
frequency column must be 24.

Right students, are your ready, we are now going to use the data in the tally chart
collected above, to make a bar chart.

Can you share with the rest of our students, why is it important that we choose a
suitable scale for a bar chart?

If you know this answer, use Edmodo to share your feedback with your class.

Remember a scale with intervals labelled in two units per centimetre is the
most suitable.
Using a blank paper, see if you can copy and complete this bar
chart. Don’t be shy, try to make it as neat and colourful as possible
and don’t forget, label the vertical and horizontal axis as shown and
spaces between votes, remember the bars in the bar chart should
have gaps between them.

Wasn’t that fun!

If you like, share with your friends questions relating to this bar
chart…try to use Edmodo for this task…

Now let’s do some book work – Turn to Collins Busy Ant Math's Pupil
Book 4B page page 36 and page 37…

Please note: Your class teacher will instruct you as to which

challenge you must complete.
I know you now ready to move on, enjoy, good luck with your book
work and chat to you tomorrow 
RED GROUP:

YOUR WORK FOR TODAY WILL BE TO
COMPLETE COLLINS BUSY ANT MATHS – PUPIL
BOOK 4 B
PAGE 36 AND PAGE 37 – CHALLENGE 1, 2 AND
CHALLENGE 3

If you want your parents to check your work, let them mark it with a green pen or pencil…good luck!

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

TELL ME,

 CAN YOU INTERPRET DATA?

 COULD YOU USE A SCALED BAR CHART?

WELL DONE STUDENTS, YOU REALLY MAKING US PROUD WITH

YOUR TASKS!
HOPE YOU ENJOYED
