66° G2 EMM Code 136 – Exhaust Temp ABOVE Range
TST Summary
The purpose of this TST is to better clarify what to look for when troubleshooting an EMM code 136 –
Exhaust / Muffler Temperature Overheat Fault.

Procedure

The max engine temp is only about 163°, indicating there is not an issue with the cylinder block
overheating or lack of water pressure.

Here we see freeze frame data while the code 136 was set. Note the cylinder temperatures around
125° F, again indicating that the powerhead itself is not overheating.

TECHNICAL SERVICE TIP

➢ From the engine report above we can see that the EMM has set a code 136, with the exhaust temp at 160° F
and the engine above 5000 RPM. However, the cylinder block temps were only at about 125° F, indicating
that the rest of the cooling system is functioning properly. Let’s look at how the exhaust gases are cooled.

Water flows up from the water pump through the water tube into the exhaust adaptor, follows both
paths around the megaphone. The water jackets of the Exhaust Adaptor are cooled, and then to the
water center of the adaptor. Water then flows through the side of the water filter and on down
through the bottom of the filter and out into the exhaust housing. The water flow is then dispersed
by a deflector in exhaust housing.

TECHNICAL SERVICE TIP

Water flows down through the water filter

and through the passageway and out into
the exhaust gases. As the water flows out
into the exhaust gas, the water hits the
deflector to diffuse into the exhaust gases.
(See Below)

➢ The filter and passages through the housing need to be free and clear of any debris, that can cause a
restriction in the outgoing exhaust cooling water. To remove the filter, thread a ¼-20 bolt into the top of
the water filter and pull straight up and out. DO NOT pry against the machined surface of the exhaust
adaptor to get the filter out. Visually inspect passageway in housing to verify no blockages. Clean and re-
use filter. If exhaust adaptor has been visually inspected but no obstructions found, replace the adaptor
assembly.
