NASTAVNA TEMA: UNIT 8 – AROUND THE GLOBE
NASTAVNA JEDINICA: UNIT 8 - CAN A TEENAGE ENVIRONMENTALIST CLEAN UP OUR OCEANS?
TIP ČASA: obrada

UVODNI DEO:

As we have evolved, our needs have demanded the production of materials that are durable and weather-resistant -
PLASTIC! But what happens to all that plastic when we throw it away?

Start the lesson by playing The Majestic Plastic Bag - A Mockumentary. Click on the link below.

At the end of the video, explain which aspects of the video are true, which are exaggerated, and which merely are
added for entertainment value.
true: The problem with plastic bags accumulating in oceans and how they end up in GPGP
exaggerated: Describing park services as the enemies of plastic bags.
added for entertainment value: The fight between a Yorkie and a plastic bag

The topic of today's lesson is the region of the world known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP); an area of
the ocean where marine debris has conjugated due to the ocean’s currents. This area contains a high density of plastics
and other debris, estimated to be TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS!

NEW WORDS:
rubbish tip- an aea of land where people can dump things that are no longer useful or wanted; deponija
contaminants - /kənˈtæmɪnənt/ - a polluting or poisonous substance that makes sth. impure; zagađivači
debris- /ˈdebri/ - scattered pieces of rubbish or remains; otpaci
landfill – the disposal of waste material by burying it; deponija

whirlpool - /ˈwɜːlpuːl/a quickly rotating mass of water in a river or sea into which objects may be drawn,
typically caused by the meeting of conflicting currents; kovitlac, vrtlog

nutrients - /ˈnjuːtriənt/ -a substance that provides nourishment essential for the maintenance of life and for
growth; hranljivi sastojci

Exercise 5 p.111 Answer the questions based on the article.

1. Apart from plastic, what other things pollute oceans?
2. What is a 'gyre', how many are there and where is the biggest one?
3. Why is plastic pollution a problem for marine life?
4. How is Slat's device different from other ' clean up' devices?
5. What two claims does Slat make about the effectiveness of his device?
Answer the questions here
1) Toxic contaminants such as acid rain, debris from landfills, sewage and industrial waste from
oilfields and ships
2) A gyre is a rotating current like a giant whirlpool. There are five such gyres
3) Because when plastic breaks up, it becomes food for marine life
4) Slant’s device waits for the plastic to come to us, instead of going after the plastic.
5) It could clean up 20 billion tonnes of plastic from the oceans and it would make up to 500 million
dollars yearly from recycling

ZAVRŠNI DEO
Prepare for an interview
What questions would you ask Boyan Slat if you were to write an article about the Ocean Cleanup system?
Writedown the questions in the box below.

What would you do about the pollution problem in the USA?

Can we use something like black balls in order to prevent plastic bags from accumulating in oceans?
How much money is the Ocean Cleanup system ready to invest?

Homework: WORD STORE 8, (knjižica na zadnjoj strani udžbenika) p. 17 i udžbenik str. 111, vežbanja
7,8,9 i 10.
Exercise 7, p. 111 – Complete WORD STORE 8A p 17, with the base form of the words in red in the
article.
Exercise 8, p. 111
Exercise 9 - Complete WORD STORE 8B p 17,with words from the article. Use these definitions to help
them. What is the mystery word?
Exercise 10: What do you think are the most worrying hazards and pollutants in the ocean? Why?

Ex 7: nutrients, prey, species, tides, whirlpool

Ex 8: species, tides, prey, nutrients, currents, whirlpool
Ex 9: acid rain, sewage, rubbish tips, industrial waste, contaminants, hazards = debris
Ex 10: I think that toxic and factory waste are the most worrying hazards and pollutants because oil spills,
from which they come from, are really hard to clean up compared to the other pollutants.
