CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 What Is the Identified Research Problem?

The identified research problem is about the incident happened on Malate, Manila wherein the Sogo hotel
branch building collapsed during the demolition. 2 workers died during the incident.

 Why Is There A Need to Do the Study About the Said Problem?

Because this problem is one of the main problems of the Civil engineers who are not doing their work
properly thus one mistake can cost the lives of workers inside the building. As civil engineering student
researchers, we must hone our skills and broaden our knowledge in this field.

 What made the researcher decide to do the study?

This incident happened recently thus the researchers have the opportunity to research new information
regarding this latest incident.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PURPOSE

 What are the objectives of the study?

 To determine the causes of the collapse of building
 To know the importance of safety, rules and policies during demolition
 To know what are the duties of Civil engineers in order to avoid making the same mistakes that
may cause this incident to happen again.

C. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the study is that it will helps Civil engineers to be more informative and knowledgeable about the
consequences if they make mistakes during construction and demolition in which this study will enable them to
improve their decision making and forecasting in order to prevent or take action if an incident like this may or
happen.

D. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study aims to study regarding the incident on the Sogo Hotel Branch at Malate Manila only. Thus the study will
covers the faults, mistakes, and violation of laws, codes and standards of the engineers, subcontractors, safety
officers and authorities involved in the incident.
CHAPTER 2: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
A. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Structural failure is the loss of the load carrying capacity of the component or member within structure or structure
itself. Structural failure initiated when the material is stressed to its strength limit which causes the cracks & excessive
deformation. Any structure has several components/members like super-structure, sub-structure& foundations. (Adil dar
et. al, 2004)
The causes of these failures have been studied and as a result, remedial measures were implemented. The failures
were caused either by design oversights, construction deficiencies and sometimes error in the computerized Analyses
and Design Procedures. The cases highlight the need for a greater degree of care and vigilance in the analysis, design,
checking and construction of Civil Engineering Projects. (Morales, 2007)

According to the Adil and Morales, main factors that causes structural failure or building collapse is load capacity of
the structural component, its design calculation, design oversight, construction deficiencies on material or equipment
and incomplete design procedure in which the building is not strong enough to carry its capacity therefore it causes to
fail and collapse and it causes casualties and accidents.

C. HYPOTHESIS
 In the conducted study and investigation, the researcher’s preliminary hypothesis is that the causes of collapse of
building in Malate, Manila are poor management of personnel and workers involved in the demolition of the building.
